I highly recommend this movie, and as to not give anything away I won't break into details ;) so you'll have to see to find out! but the cast & crew quite honestly did a phenomenal job! excellent cinematography. there a lot of points that make this such a wonderful addition to the Western genre, I think you'll know after seeing it for yourself :] great humour and wonderful points not often reflected upon enough in the genre. It breaks into the character of people & hits on the roles different people made on with in the Old West. You see the characters come to life and experience these roles first hand, & to jump the gun,(or guns as one might note) the title isn't without meaning. A really wonderful work!
Don has an extremely versatile range, in this movie he's seems to take a eloquent theater background performance and morph it with a big screen evil villain. It's like Shakespeare doing a western his character was a thrill to watch! His delivery is outstanding, I was glued to his performance, from perfectly delivered lines to a character that he played beyond brilliant fully invested even in song at one point about, well I won't spoil it but it's hilarious. The movie is shot well and the cast is professional, the sets are beautiful with authentic era wardrobe. I really can't say enough about dons performance, this is one talented actor! I look forward to now viewing more of his work. I'm a western junkie and there are some modern pieces of garbage out there, this is not one of them, Swayze is brilliant in this 10 stars brother
This is one of those movies that makes you want to go back and watch it again and again. There are so many twists and subtleties, you make new connections every time you see it! The viewer is kept guessing up until the end, and it's often hard to tell who is on which side. The production quality is fantastic, especially for an independent film. It is also one of the more historically accurate films in its genre. The music is all original and quite fitting; it complements every scene perfectly. You can tell that everyone involved really put their hearts into this production. If you're like me and you love movies that leave you thinking, "Wow, I never expected that!" then you will love this movie.
I had the opportunity to sit down here in 2021 to watch the 2012 Western "Heathens and Thieves". Sure, I hadn't even heard about it prior to watching it. But I found the synopsis to be somewhat interesting. And since it was a movie that I hadn't already seen, of course I found the time to watch it.
And I must admit that writer John Douglas Sinclair definitely managed to compile a rather interesting and riveting storyline. The story told in "Heathens and Thieves" was one that instantly grabbed a hold of me and brought me along on an enjoyable and entertaining ride.
The story progressed at a great pace in the movie, and that definitely served the movie quite well. And also, the storyline was one that wasn't overly predictable and writer John Douglas Sinclair had managed to put enough surprises and twists into the storyline to make it rather unique and enjoyable.
And the characters that were placed into the storyline were very rich and detailed. So that made for a very believable character gallery, which is something that is always a great thing in a movie.
It should be said that the cast they had opted to hire for this 2012 Western were quite good. There were some pretty sound and solid acting performances throughout the movie. I have to say that I really enjoyed watching Andrew Simpson (playing Saul) and Gwendoline Yeo (playing Kun Hua) in the movie. But it was also good entertainment to have Don Swayze (playing Sherman) in this 2012 Western as well.
I was genuinely entertained by directors Megan Peterson and John Douglas Sinclair's 2012 Western movie. And should you have the opportunity to sit down to watch it, you should definitely do so.
My rating of "Heathens and Thieves" land on a six out of ten stars.

I felt this was an excellent movie. The sets and locations were authentic and conveyed the sense of the timing of the movie. The photography was particularly creative. The story touched on several issues, race, honor, loyalty, corruption, the aftermath of the civil war, without being overpowering. The characters had depth and sincerity, especially the female lead. Some of their background was conveyed in a very subtle, but effective manner. The setting in California was an interesting wrinkle, but the movie still had the feel of a "western". It makes us think of the evolution of America. All in all a good modern take on the western genre.

- GaffesWhen Bronco (Jesse James Youngblood) pulls a pistol on Saul (Andrew Simpson) at the table, the first angle shows the gun to be an open framed Colt, but the next angle shows a closed framed Remington pistol. When he unloads the pistol it is the Remington and when he hands it to Kun Hua (Gwendoline Yeo) it a Colt. The magic pistol changes back and forth between Colt and Remington depending on the angles.
