Jessie Reyez Is Here for Loving Unapologetically, Lauryn Hill, and Mushrooms Maybe Being Aliens
Image
Jessie Reyez got emotional in the studio while filming the latest episode of Rolling Stone Recommends. She wasn’t talking about her new studio album Pain in Memories, which arrived last week, on which she unpacks reflections on her relationship with success, becoming a healthier version of herself, and finding the silver lining in heartbreak. No, what brought her nearly to tears was actually the idea of introducing aliens to love by showing them a video captured while she was playing with her niece. But this is where Reyez is right now,...

Nu Boyana & Free Dolphin Ready Slate, Including ‘Velvet Curtain’ & ‘Murder High’ — EFM
Image
Exclusive: Bulgaria’s Nu Boyana Film Studios and France’s Free Dolphin Entertainment will take seven films in production this year, and have unveiled their joint EFM slate.

Since last year’s MIPCOM, Nu Boyana and Free Dolphin have been developing a strategy to release a continuous flow of movies for international distribution on ad-supported streaming services, and they are now in Berlin seeking financial and distributor partners on several projects.

The plan is to launch features “monthly” with Film Forge, Nu Boyana’s vocational training program, involved in each production.

Leading the EFM slate is Velvet Curtain (fka Fluxx) a high-concept psychological thriller that we first reported on in December 2023. It now has a U.S. theatrical release planned for this summer.

Brendan Gabriel Murphy’s pic stars Shelley Hennig and Shiloh Fernandez, with Tyrese Gibson (Fast & Furious franchise) in a key supporting role.

‘Refuge’ Review

Stars: Aston McAuley, Sophie Simnett, Jason Flemyng, Johanna Harlin, Raza Jaffrey, Shervin Alenabi | Written by Ben Sztajnkrycer | Directed by Renny Harlin

Renny Harlin’s career has come full circle, from low-budget horror and action films like Born American and Prison through blockbusters such as Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger before reverting back to budget-minded films like The Bricklayer and this film, Refuge. This time around, he’s bringing the horrors of war back home as a soldier’s encounter with the unexplained threatens the lives of everyone around him.

Sergeant Rick Pedroni is serving somewhere in Afghanistan when his unit takes a group of Taliban prisoner. Questioned about a nearby cave, they say there’s no more of them in there, in fact, none of them would go in there. Rick volunteers to check it out.

This sets off a long flashback to he and Kate’s wedding day. By...

A Soldier Returns with a Demon in Supernatural Horror 'Refuge' Trailer
Image
"I know you think you found something out there. Or something found him..." Vertical has revealed a full official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Refuge, made by the acclaimed Finnish action filmmaker Renny Harlin - also of The Strangers; Chapter 1. Apparently he was already in Bulgaria shooting Ninja Fury when local producers contacted him about making Refuge next. After a mysterious attack from a malevolent demon during his tour of duty in Afghanistan, Sergeant Rick Pedroni returns home a changed man, and more dangerous than ever. This is similar to many other solider-returns-home-damaged films but with a supernatural Ptsd twist. The film stars Aston McAuley as Rick, Sophie Simnet as his wife Kate, Raza Jaffrey, Johanna Harlin, Shervin Alenabi, Atanas Srebrev, Max Kraus, and Jason Flemyng. This mostly looks like generic horror mashed up with a soldier story, though it does have some scary scenes in it. // Continue...

Danny DeVito Sets Fall Broadway Return With Daughter Lucy In Theresa Rebeck Play ‘I Need That’
Image
Danny DeVito will return to the Broadway stage this October in a new play by Theresa Rebeck called I Need That.

The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor will star alongside his daughter Lucy DeVito and Ray Anthony Thomas in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of what the company describes as “a deeply human new comedy.”

Preview and opening night dates for I Need That at Roundabout’s American Airlines Theatre will be announced later.

The synopsis: Sam (DeVito) doesn’t get out much. Actually, he doesn’t get out at all, opting instead for the safety of his house in the company of his things – his many, many things. But when a notice from the government arrives alerting Sam that he must clean up his property or face eviction, he’s forced to reckon with what’s trash, what’s treasure, and whether we can ever know the difference between the two.
