During the London premiere of this film in September 2023, Sir Michael Caine announced his retirement from acting stating that; "I am bloody 90 now, and I can't walk properly and all that. I sort of am retired now.".

Based on a true story that made national news about pensioner Bernard Jordan who in 2014, absconded from his care home in Hove, Sussex UK to attend an event in France marking the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings. After the local Police were notified, the care home got a call that evening to say Mr. Jordan had been found safe and well in France. He returned a few days later, having made his way to the event.
Sir Michael Caine said he would only appear in this film if his old friend Sir John Standing was also cast. They had known each other since the 1950s when they were both struggling unknown actors, and had previously appeared together in L'aigle s'est envolé (1976).
