I am a sucker for Kungfu Theater and that was what I was browsing when I came across High Kick Girl! It is in Japanese- I know three words in Japanese- so I was just jumping to fight scenes. About midway through, I realized I was slightly confused about the plot. Here is where I rebound a ways, turned on subtitles and started watching.

1st The plot turned out to be very simple: A girl is a strong karateka. She goes around kicking butt. She falls in with a gang she believes is like-minded. They were actually holding an old grudge and just using her to get to her sensei. They get the sensei, but to their regret.

2nd The martial arts are pretty danged good. I especially appreciated how clean and simple they played the karate- no Chinese Theater, no wires, no magic- just karate. Miyagi would've approved.

3rd I was introduced to a director ploy that, unlike the other reviewers, I quite enjoyed. This is to show a fight sequence, the show it again in slow motion, sometimes a third slow-motion take even slower. You can see the actual karate techniques in their effective simplicity.

I would recommend this movie to anyone who actually practices karate. I have plans on rewatching High Kick Girl! Again with the subtitles on from the beginning.
