Un week-end en enfer

Just what I was in the mood for. Several laugh-out-loud moments! Nothing mind-blowing, just a fun escape with a little horror sprinkled in. I watched because it was listed as the No. 1 movie this Friday on Max, and I knew Brandon Flynn from 13 Reasons Why, and like him as an actor. Was also obsessed with Lisa Kudrow's character in this; her one-liners had me cracking up. Not too spooky that those who aren't into horror wouldn't enjoy it. The best friend Sara was also hilarious! Such a funny joining-of-families gone terribly wrong, but the band of misfits somehow work together. I would watch again!

The Parentjng is a truly bizarre experience; whoever this writer and director are have somehow got the funding together for a mid sized budget to house and an impossibly prolific cast to appear in what can only be described as one of the silliest, most derivative and thinly stretched scripts I've seen in some time. And yet.. the cast they got somehow manages to make it worthwhile on their collective manic energy alone. The story sees a gay couple rent an Airbnb out in the country so that both sets of their parents can meet and they can all get some downtime. Right off the bat the woman they get the keys from (Parker Posey in full on loopy mode) is just super odd, and of course the house happens to be haunted by a very dysfunctional demon. The two gay dudes aren't the most memorable actors but their parents are played by Brian Cox, Edie Falco, Dean Norris and Lisa Kudrow, which is quite the impressive lineup. The running gag is that Cox's character gets possessed by the destructive demon and this is where the film comes as close to inspired as it ever can: strutting about the house ass naked instructing anyone who will listen to look at his dick, cheerfully slashing up anyone close to him with a bread knife and barking out lots of homophobic slurs (the demon comes from a less enlightened time, one character informs us), he is the absolute star of the show here and even in a hopelessly underwritten comedy that relies on shamelessly cheap and vulgar gags, Cox is just one of the best to ever do it and makes his scenes hum with an anarchic, almost Evil Dead vibe. Posey also chews scenery in the few appearances she has, bookending the film with her manic pixie energy that is always welcome. It's not a good movie by anyone's standards and I'm frankly surprised it even got made let alone with this cast, but it has some hilarious moments and flashes of comedic brilliance, mostly thanks to Cox and willingness to get weird and wave his schlong around. Not every film intentionally sets out to be Oscar-worthy. Sometimes you make a film to showcase Brian Cox as something other than Logan Roy, and whether that was the intent or not, he was hilarious and crude and kind, and I really enjoyed it! Love seeing Edie Falco again, LOVE Lisa Kudrow and her quippy one liners, LOOOOVE Parker Posey, she can't do anything wrong, in my opinion. It's just a mindless horror comedy (though more Comedy and less horror), and that's honestly what we all need right now. I probably wouldn't set out to watch it again, but I'm definitely glad I decided to watch it today!

There are a lot of talented actors, but the movie itself seems completely lost. It doesn't know whether it wants to be scary or funny, and in the end, it's neither. The only real saving grace is Parker Posey, who, as always, steals every scene she's in with her charisma and energy. Beyond that, the so-called "jokes" feel tired and overused, the character development is clumsy and unnatural, and the pacing is unbearably slow. It drags on without any real purpose, making the whole experience frustrating. What could have been an entertaining film ends up as a messy, forgettable disappointment....

The Parenting offers the weekend gathering of a gay couple, both sets of parents, and a female friend of one of the gay couple. Add Parker Posey as a kookie spiritualist offering a haunted home for an Air BNB, and the cast is complete. Also the parents as played by good actors that bring the funny as best as they can.

The trouble with this film is that it doesn't coalesce into a whole concept well. First, we have the class of cultures with the two sets of parents, one rich and uptight and the other middle class and more "common." Second, the gay couple follow some of the tropes albeit mildly elevated of what gays are typically in films. Third, the haunted house follows every step of a comedy satire of this type of film.

It was an okay watch, nothing special, and not bringing much overall to the table. It has a little bit of stiffness as if these were sketches strung together from a stage play. So while some scenes may bring a little levity to the movie, overall this doesn't offer much in terms of entertainment.
