Living Legends 66-0

I very much enjoyed "Living legends 66-0". Directed and written by Michael Hopwood, this is an important documentary that shares the unforgettable story of the Compton High School basketball team during the late 1960's. An all-black basketball team in post-riot Compton, California was led by a white head coach who transforms a team of athletes into living legends. Compton High School becoming the first team in California history to win 66 consecutive basketball games without a loss while becoming back-to-back undefeated State and National Champions. As National Champions they represented the city of Compton, the state of California and the nation.

The coach was a father figure to many players, and was able to rally them into an unbeatable team. The players faced racism and discrimination, and brutality on and off the court. 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of that historic accomplishment. Something that hasn't been done in over 50 years and may never be done again. Decades later, the players came together and was able to recognize their coach by getting the school to name the indoor basketball court floor after him, which I felt to be very moving.

Those teams, players, and coaches became professional athletes, Hall of Fame coaches, college graduates, Olympians, teachers, veterans and elected officials but were left out of their rightful place in history. I hope "Living Legends 66-0" will help spread the word about this truly memorable basketball team, and the courage and valor they stood for. They deserve to be recognized in their rightful place in history. I highly recommend this important and entertaining documentary.

This is a quality documentary, not necessarily about black players overcoming adversity and discrimination (which they certainly did) but also it highlights the overall much needed message with all youth that praise and time spent can elevate a young person to help them realize their potential and strive for more. I think this is the main takeaway that coach Wooden gave to those players and the results showed up in their 66 wins and ultimate state championships.

The film is well put together, clear audio and thoughtful testimonies and interviews with former players and tells the story in a powerful yet uplifting manner.
