Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki in Supernatural (2005)
Ratings: Riverdale Returns Red-Hot, Doubling Its Season 1 Numbers
Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki in Supernatural (2005)
Jinkies! Or… whatever they exclaim over in Riverdale. Because the CW drama on Wednesday opened Season 2 not just with series highs but double its usual numbers — and on a new night, with no lead-in.

Related2018 Renewal Scorecard: What’s Coming Back? What’s Getting Cancelled?

All told, Riverdale drew 2.33 million total viewers and a 0.8 demo rating (per finals), up sharply from its freshman launch out of Supernatural (1.4 mil/0.5) and doubling its Season 1 average and finale (both of which were 1 mil/0.4).

In fact, Archie and the gang delivered the Wednesday lead-off spot’s best numbers since the Nov. 30 episode of Arrow.

‘Great News’ Review: Tina Fey Pushes Season 2 Toward ’30 Rock’ Territory as the New Jack Donaghy
John Michael Higgins, Andrea Martin, Horatio Sanz, Adam Campbell, Nicole Richie, and Briga Heelan in Great News (2017)
As a zany workplace comedy focused on the production of a live TV show, “Great News” has always been just a few degrees removed from “30 Rock.” Creator Tracy Wigfield came up the ranks through Tina Fey’s classic NBC sitcom, so it’s only fitting that her Fey-produced debut features a few similarities to a show Wigfield produced, wrote, and even cameo-d in. (She also co-stars in “Great News,” as Beth, the rather intense meteorologist).

After a critically approved but less-than-buzzy first season, Wigfield & Co. are leaning into the likeness: Tina Fey has joined the ensemble cast for seven episodes; series lead Katie Wendelson (Briga Heelan) is shifting into a mentor-mentee relationship with her new boss (played by Fey); the show is re-focusing on sharper topical storylines, and Chris Parnell, a “30 Rock” favorite as Dr. Leo Spaceman, even drops by for a guest spot in Episode 2.

Atypical Review: This Autism Comedy Warms the Heart, Minus the Schmaltz
Keir Gilchrist in Atypical (2017)
“Heartwarming” is a tricky word to use in a TV review: It brings to mind those insufferably corny, 7th Heaven-type shows where the family has a big group hug at the end of each episode. (Yuck.) But Netflix’s whimsical new family comedy Atypical — debuting Friday, Aug. 11 — manages to sidestep those landmines and deliver something that truly warms the heart, with a cast full of sweet-natured characters, a bracing dose of melancholy and a terrific lead performance from Keir Gilchrist.

2017 TV Critics Association Award Nominations Honor ‘Atlanta,’ ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ ‘This Is Us’
Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, and Faithe Herman in This Is Us (2016)
According to the Television Critics Association, it was a big year for women, people of color, dystopias and the afterlife. At least, that’s what can be gleaned from the nominees for the 2017 TCA Award nominees, announced this morning.

In terms of total nominees, FX’s “Atlanta,” Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and NBC’s “This Is Us” led the pack with four each. Following, with three nominations each, were HBO’s “Big Little Lies,” FX’s “Feud: Bette And Joan,” Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” and NBC’s “The Good Place.”

Notably, the Individual Achievement in Drama and Comedy nominees, which don’t specify gender, were dominated by women in a variety of key roles, and the only men recognized were men of color, including Sterling K. Brown, Aziz Ansari, and Donald Glover. (That’s right, MTV, the Television Critics Association has been doing gender-neutral awards for quite some time — so slow your roll.

‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ Faces the Future and 4 More Things to Watch This Weekend, May 19-21
Ellie Kemper in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (2015)
Welcome to PeekTV, your daily look at the best that television has to offer. In each installment, we make three picks for the best shows to watch and…toss in a little extra.

The Weekend of May 19-21 What Happened Last Night?!

(Why is this man sulking? Find out what happened with last night’s TV picks.)

“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”

Season 3, Netflix

Synopsis: As Ben Travers put it in his season review: Through six episodes, Season 3 has shown far less reliance on the past and an invigorating interest in the future. It’s not that Kimmy’s time underground got stale so much as her rapid development into adulthood would inevitably require more time to be spent in the present. We’ve covered a lot of her arrested development, and now it’s time to see what kind of story an adult Kimmy has to tell. So far, it’s a damn good one.

American Housewife Premiere: Is ABC's Newest Family Comedy a Total Dud?
Diedrich Bader, Katy Mixon Greer, Daniel DiMaggio, Meg Donnelly, and Giselle Eisenberg in American Housewife (2016)
American Housewife was originally called The Second-Fattest Housewife in Westport. It’s a title that perfectly represents Tuesday’s series premiere, assuming you can get past the fact that its central character isn’t actually fat.

Of course, that’s part of the alleged joke in this mean-spirited sitcom that, having changed its title, is hopefully planning to throw out its premise and start fresh in Week 2.

Primetime Live (1989)
'American Housewife' Review: ABC's Successful Comedy Streak Comes to a Whiny Halt
Primetime Live (1989)
ABC has a proven track record of developing cutting-edge (for Primetime anyway), ethnically diverse comedies like Modern Family, Black-ish, Fresh Off the Boat and Speechless. So, the network has set the bar high for American Housewife. Unfortunately, this sitcom about a zaftig housewife and the day-to-day challenges she faces as a stay-at-home mom is uninspired, and at times, downright offensive.

Katy Mixon stars as Katie Otto, the matriarch of a middle-class family living in the wealthy enclave of Westport, Connecticut. Even though Katie has a degree in marketing from Duke, and her husband Greg (Diedrich Bader) is a college professor, the couple can only afford to be "renters" in Westport. Katie is very vocal about how much she despises the locals which leads to the question of why the Otto family chooses to reside in a town where Katie clearly feels unwelcome and uncomfortable. Their motivation for settling in Westport...

Watch New ABC Show Trailers: 'Conviction,' 'Notorious,' More
Hayley Atwell lost a job and gained another in one fell swoop. The actress's "Agent Carter" was canceled by ABC, but now she's headlining a new legal drama titled "Conviction."

It's just one of a large crop of new series ordered by the network, which cleared out its schedule in canceling "Agent Carter," "Castle," "The Family," "The Muppets," and "Nashville." The new shows continue ABC's brand mixing sexy, serialized dramas with family comedies.

And for the first time in a few years, Thursday will not be entirely ruled by Shonda Rhimes' shows. Due to Kerry Washington's pregnancy, "Scandal" is being held until midseason. In its place, talk show drama "Notorious" will try to continue the #Tgit magic.

Kerry Washington in Scandal (2012)
Say goodbye to ABC's all-Shonda Thursday lineup — at least until midseason. Kerry Washington's pregnancy has delayed (and shortened) the next season of Scandal, which means the schedule ABC announced today will be the first in a few years featuring a show not produced by Shonda Rhimes airing on that night in the fall. The Honourable Woman, “The Empty Chair”

Written by Hugo Blick

Directed by Hugo Blick

Aired July 3, 2014

For anyone burnt out on Homeland‘s increasingly 24-esque take on international intrigue and perilous spycraft, Hugo Blick’s BBC/SundanceTV miniseries The Honourable Woman offers a respite, leaning harder on psychological and sociopolitical realism than overwrought action beats while tackling unrest in the Middle East and the repercussions of violence. Its first installment, “The Empty Chair,” is a case study in how to introduce both a complex story and complex characters without feeling like it’s needlessly dwarfing viewers in subplots just for the sake of it. Moreover, it works both as a sterling showcase...

Weekend Box Office: Trained Dragons Fly High
After a solid three weeks at number one Tim Burton.s Alice In Wonderland finally fell to newcomer How To Train Your Dragon. Although it easily took the top spot with $43 million, it.s a disappointing start for a promising movie with a $165 million budget to win back. It wasn.t enough to top Alice In Wonderland which added $17 million to its almost $300 million grand total. Julianne Moore and Liam Neeson.s new movie Chloe saw small release to the tune of $1 million in just 350 theaters. With no announced plans to expand the release, the project may be hard pressed to cover its $15 million...
