Jaeger is great as the leading woman, but it's tedious, badly written, and the twist is too too clever

Solitary (2011)

The lead actress here, Amber Jaeger, might be the only real acting talent in this fairly small cast. But she's really good, as she was in he husband's recent movie, "Take Me Home." In a way this is a suburban middle class version of the Ashley Judd look at insanity, "Bug." And like "Bug," this recent movie is low budget and deeply flawed.

And there is also a huge twist near the end that is very clever, and you can see a much better movie in it all by rearranging the clues to the twist so the audience can build some expectation. I can't say more without ruining that part of it, but I can point out the obvious that any viewer will discover in short time--the movie is slow, redundant, and confusing. It's highly improbable (or so it seems). If it had been even more improbable, so that you didn't just think it was bad writing in a bad movie, you'd start to wonder why it was improbable, what kind of weird "Memento" like trick is at work.

No such luck. Instead we have to see Jaeger's fighting her mind, and her fear of open spaces, and ignore the weird facts. Once you realize what is really happening (in the last ten minutes) you'll wonder why the whole movie couldn't have been an extraordinary mind trip, a fanciful game of invention and imagination. But that would make sense (like it does, in a weirdly parallel way, in the Robin Williams romance, "What Dreams May Come").

This is an indie production made in 2009, but in one of the common and frustrating aspects of that world, it sometimes takes really long to find a distributor, and so it's out in 2011. The director, Greg Derochie, is a special effects guy from Hollywood (everyone wants to be a director, you see), and in a huge irony, the special effects here are clunky. (I'm going to guess he didn't transfer to a low budget world very well.)

Anyway, I love movies, and I rarely say this, but unless you're an Amber Jaeger fan (there must be several of us in the country--we'll see more of her), I'd skip it.

Promising plot but...

It fell flat. I picked up too many plot flaws and actually became annoyed🙈 Watched until the end but had worked out what was going on about halfway in. Too many options to choose an action or reaction that was not followed through or realistic. Lead role was great, convincing. So many symbolic moments that I could not understand because there was no explanation in the end. Don't want to add spoilers so won't mention specific scenes. Acting from the rest of the cast was ok. Had potential to be a nail-biter but sadly it was not. The director can do better with more experience and a better storyline.

Total waste of time

I watched this movie based on the reviews from IMDb. I totally disagree with most of the reviews I have read. This basically B movie trying to give you a psychiatric drama. What you actually get is bad acting. The production value is less than that of a made for TV movie on one of the low end cable networks. The film really only has 2 main characters the woman trying to figure things out and her psychologist. Almost everything takes place in her house. The plot is pointless it doesn't make you want to watch it to find out what is really going on. I am sorry for rambling but they force you to write 10 lines if it the movies is a waste. The out come of this movie is that it makes you feel angry that you wasted your time watching it. Do yourself a favor and skip this movie.

Absolute worst movie I have seen this decade

I spent 2 hours trying to make sense out of a story that made no sense. It misleads the viewer over and over again and makes the characters look as stupid as it makes the viewer feel. It is poor science fiction but is not labeled science fiction up front. The director helped write the story so I understand why he was involved in the making of it. What Ican't understand is how he found some apparently talented people to work on it. I was left with the feeling that I had wasted my time and that there must be more to the story. I want to say something good about the movie. I guess the actors did a good job with what they had to work with and it was free (with my satellite TV package.) If you are not a science fiction fan, skip this one.

Totally Unique and Fascinating

This is not a great film, but it is far, far better than the 5 average it has received. It is a mystery with a bit of science fiction added, and I suspect it is the science fiction part that is bothering some of the viewers. But even if you hate science fiction, you should give this movie a view because it will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Who is good and who is evil? You will not know until the very end, and the ending will be nothing like you have seen before. You will be left breathless and it will make you think. The acting is very good, and the timing and discontinuities are very well designed to keep you guessing. Don't miss this movie if you have a chance to see it.

OK story, good lead performance

Solitary looks like another damsel-in-distress Lifetime TV movie, but it has some decent tricks up its sleeve. The mystery is enough to keep you interested. The apparent resolution is cliched, but it turns out to be a red herring, and the actual reveal at the end is...well, not very original, but I bought it anyway. Maybe I was just in a charitable mood. Amber Jaeger's performance is really what knits things together. I'd like to see her in some other films with better scripts. Entertaining, and worth a watch if you're not feeling too critical.

Oh Wow....Craptacular.....

-1 Star The guy is the movie his accent seems horribly faked. If it isn't faked, I apologize, but maybe you should never ever use your real accent again if it isn't faked.

-1 Star for our 'first date' being a trip to the top of some mountain?? Seriously???

This is just too much flipping around. In the room, in a crash, outside, inside....annoying as hell.

-1 Star really? The payoff was pure utter crap. Crap Crap Crap.

Made it to the brutally bad ending tho... 2/10

I was more than amazed . . .

This was really a surprise, a film I had not really heard about, but just took a bit of a chance with it, not knowing what to expect.

I was more than amazed . . . certainly one the most original concepts for a story I've seen yet in a film, and incredibly well delivered via Amber Jaeger's character.

This is probably her best work, at least that I know of, and a bit of a risky role to experiment with, but she pulls it off about as perfectly as could possibly be done in the context of the story.

I'm not even going to give a hint at what eventually evolves out of this story as it unfolds . . . you'll just have to sit down and absorb this yourself. This is not an "action" thriller by any stretch of the imagination, but it is absolutely thought provoking.

I'm not even sure if there is anything I would try to compare this to, but no worries. I doubt you'll be disappointed . . . definitely 10 stars, and then some.

Low Budget Mystery

Agoraphobia ... but is this what this is about? Does the mind of our main character play tricks on her? And is that a pun considering what the story later reveals to us? Yes there are twists and I understand that some watching this may feel offended by how the movie evolves and develops. But if you don't have love for low budget movies, than this may not be for you from the start anyway.

This is about the intriguing story and how it is told. Does it have flaws? Yes! And too few also. But is it able to grip you and hold your attention until the end with the story and how it unfolds? Also yes - if you let the movie of course. Taste in movies is something that makes us discuss and also disagree a lot. I expect this to be the case with some who feel very strongly (negatively) here ... but that does not change what I felt while watching this. It is good for the budget it has and for mystery it serves the viewer. And the reveal is more than fine enough (with me)

Good Story

I won't provide spoilers, but they are good to read after you watch the movie to see what everyone else thought. It is a good movie, with a good story, and a good level of suspense. Watch it closely. The acting by the main actress is good, in my opinion. I can't say that about the other actors in the movie. Also, the production is not the best, but it is very well worth watching. I recommend it.

Under the radar film that's worthwhile

This movie held my interest from start to finish. It was part Hitchcock, with a light touch of David Lynch with an ending I did not see coming. But one thing that really helped create the vibe of the film was the very good music score, which I don't think no one here has mentioned in reviewing this. I'm surprised I had not seen or heard of this movie in the 10 years since it's release...I feel it's better than a lot of films of a similar genre. Catch it on Anazon Prime if you can.

Solitary

"Solitary," directed by Luke Armstrong, is a 2020 science fiction thriller that delves into themes of isolation, punishment, and survival. Set in a dystopian future, the film follows Isaac Havelock (Johnny Sachon), an ex-soldier who awakens in a confined space pod, only to discover he's been sentenced to live out his days in Earth's first off-world colony. Sharing this claustrophobic environment is Alana Skill (Lottie Tolhurst), a fellow prisoner with her own secrets. Together, they must navigate the challenges of their predicament and uncover the truth behind their sudden exile.

Armstrong, known for his visual effects work on major franchises like James Bond and Marvel, brings a polished aesthetic to "Solitary." The film opens with impressive visuals of a futuristic London, showcasing Armstrong's ability to create a believable sci-fi setting on a limited budget. The space scenes, though constrained by the film's modest resources, are executed with creativity, effectively conveying the vastness and isolation of space.

The narrative structure of "Solitary" is reminiscent of contained thrillers, where the majority of the plot unfolds within a single location. This approach can heighten tension and focus character development. However, in this instance, the film struggles to maintain engagement. The pacing is uneven, with prolonged periods of minimal action followed by rushed sequences of conflict. This inconsistency hampers the building of suspense and diminishes the impact of key plot revelations.

Character development is another area where "Solitary" falls short. Isaac's backstory as an ex-military man on the run is touched upon but lacks depth, making it challenging for viewers to connect with his plight. Similarly, Alana's character is introduced with an air of mystery, but her motivations and history remain underexplored. This lack of character depth results in interactions that feel superficial, reducing the emotional weight of their shared ordeal.

The performances of the lead actors are a mixed bag. Johnny Sachon's portrayal of Isaac is earnest but occasionally unconvincing, especially in moments that demand heightened emotional intensity. Lottie Tolhurst delivers a more compelling performance as Alana, capturing a blend of vulnerability and resilience. However, the chemistry between the two leads is lacking, which undermines the believability of their evolving relationship.

One of the film's strengths lies in its atmospheric score by Vince Cox. The synth-driven music complements the sci-fi setting, adding layers of tension and emotion to the narrative. The sound design, combined with Jack Booth's cinematography, creates a visually and aurally cohesive experience that enhances the storytelling.

Despite its shortcomings, "Solitary" does touch upon intriguing themes such as the ethics of punishment, the human need for connection, and the consequences of societal decisions. However, these themes are not fully developed, leaving the.
