Matt Lucas in Small Apartments (2012)
Franklin Franklin plays the alphorn and dreams of Switzerland. His crazy brother sends him fingernail clippings in the mail. One of his neighbors is a forgetful pot-head, the other a gruff busybody who doesn't miss anything. Across the street live a mother and her fifteen-year-old daughter, whom he likes to watch from his window, but none of these are Franklin's real problem. His real problem is that his landlord is dead, laid out on the linoleum of his kitchen, and Switzerland seems farther away all the time.

bizarrely heartwarming, & life's message/answer at the end -sit through it -

I cant believe no one has reviewed this film- so hard to "label" this one. I can tell you it is a bit "left field" and goes along with "life is stranger than fiction", it is not action packed, it is steady , plodding ,testing your loyalty, weighing you. trying to see if you are worthy of the message this movie delivers,-Literally - the filmmakers have given you life's meaning, spelled out word for word, in a crappy little semi-comedy, on the surface that's what this film is ... but, I'll bet you a dollar, this film makes you cry.

The main character spends the whole film in his underwear, and Johnny Knoxville does a great job of breaking his typecast in this,

I cant say this movie is like ..it's not like anything i can think of...maybe kinda has the same feel and pace as "spun", it is not like anything i have seen, it is a twisted tale of human interaction, told from an unwitting standpoint... and if you are like me , you will be sucker punched with the second half of this movie, you WILL be moved , and if you don't cry, I owe you a dollar-- I think this movie changed me--

    This is weird.

Clumsy deadbeat Franklin Franklin (Matt Lucas) accidentally kills his landlord. He must do everything in his power to hide the body. He finds the distractions of lust, the death of his beloved brother and a crew of misfit characters, forcing him on a journey where a fortune awaits him.

This is one weird movie. Matt Lucas is a weird white blob of a guy in his tighty whiteys. Juno Temple has a great scene. Dolph Lundgren looks super weird. Just how weird is this? Johnny Knoxville is probably the least weird person in the movie. Add in Rebel Wilson, and this is one weird L.A. apartments complex. Did I say how weird this was? OK then.

    Outstanding, quirky film

If you relish the quirkiness of "Juno", "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" and "Little Miss Sunshine", then you have to see this movie. I won't go into the detail of the plot line as there are plenty of reviews on that already, but if you relish the out of the ordinary compared to the typical Hollywood fare, then watch this movie. You won't be disappointed. Very funny and at times, very touching. All the actors put in great performances and sometimes it's not about the big "stars" you can attract or how many explosions you can create. This movie is about the story, and the lives of the characters within the story.

    Definitely worth a watch

Yes, it's is a quirky little flick. And yes, it may unnerve (or perhaps irritate) some viewers. But there is no doubt it carves it's own path, and a fairly unique one - which isn't easy to do nowadays.

I'll start by saying that it's a very funny movie at times - in an awkward sort of way. And I enjoyed it just on that level. But after it was over it I realized it had a much more impressive affect on me.

It probably won't be obvious until the end that there was a lot of care put into the direction and dialogue of this movie. Characters who on the surface seem broken and wayward end up being not much different from you and me. Their delivery is different but their longings are the same. And the director did an ace job of making that point. It's done subtly and he timed the peeks into each character's nature perfectly. It really is a very skillful little movie.

If you come across it, check it out, and don't abandon it after five minutes because it seems too odd. It's well worth the run and I'm pleased I saw it, almost thankful actually.

    A pleasant surprise

I saw it in redbox and who was in it - It took a few runs to redbox before I rented.

In the first 15+ minutes I think we just sat there with our mouths open unsure what to think.

It was not enough to punch the eject but - Wow that character is weird is all I will say.

By movie's end I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised, a very good movie that held my interest all the way through.

This is not a bad rent - give it a shot and wait for it to develop. It will not disappoint.

Bernard Franklin: [on cassette tape] Franklin, what are we so scared of? You only get one shot at this life. There are no do-overs. Time wasted, is time lost. The past is a ghost. The future a dream. There is only right now. We need to forgive each other, Franklin. Forgive and keep moving forward because we're all so ridiculously imperfect. And we need to find a place we call home. A place where we know we're loved and we feel safe. I see it all so clearly now. It doesn't matter if you live in a small apartment or some big mansion on a hill. Doesn't matter if you live in a mental institution or on some sunny beach in St. Croix. It's all in your mind. Every moment of your life is what you make it. Pain. Love. Fear. Happiness. You choose to feel each of them. So choose to be happy, Franklin. Choose to be happy! 'Cause happiness is a state of mind.

    • Versions alternatives
3 minutes have been cut on the Blu-ray version, most notably a scene between Franklin (Matt Lucas) and Dr. Sage Mennox (Dolph Lundgren, between 85:05 - 87:43 NTSC). That scene was present on the R1 US DVD. None of the Blu-rays (U.S., Norwegian or Australian editions) contain that scene. Australian DVD is also cut (88:24 PAL runtime). However it is reported the German DVD may also be uncut (92:06 PAL runtime).
