A lack of coherent storyline makes for a confusing movie...

I sat down to watch the 2020 movie "Pasture" without ever having heard about it. I stumbled upon a copy of the movie by random luck and opted to sit down to watch it.

Might as well have skipped on this movie. Yeah, this was a swing and a miss from writer Alexis Roblan and director Sean Hardaway.

I found no entertainment in "Pasture", and in fact I was about as confused as the Sarah character was in the movie, because nothing made sense in the storyline. It literally felt like I was just watching random segments of footage pieced together to make a movie. As if they had given 100 people a camera each and told them to make a small segment of footage with any of the cast members. There just was no red thread throughout the course of this movie.

And with nothing making sense or providing no entertainment, then sitting through "Pasture" was no easy feat. And believe you me, this movie was an ordeal to suffer through.

It should be noted, though, that the acting performances in the movie were actually fairly good, just a shame that the actors and actresses virtually had nothing to work with in terms of a proper script or storyline.

"Pasture" is not a movie that I would recommend you waste your time, money or effort on. Some of us suffered through this nonsense so you don't have to.

I am rating "Pasture" a mighty generous three out of ten stars. I would have given it a two, because of a confusing heap of a storyline, but the acting performances in the movie actually managed to haul the rating up a notch, and thus it scores a three star rating.

Pretentious

I cannot stand art piece films.

Intentionally being confusing so the elite few can "get it." Rude.

I am a fan of mystery; so, I know how to follow a disjointed plot. This ain't it. It's simply messy when it could have made sense.

Make it make sense DURING the film.

Get to the point!

In an effort to keep you guessing about what's real, what's not, and what's actually going on, this movie bores you to tears.

You pick up on the fact that nothing is quite what it seems as soon as this film begins, so you're waiting for the big reveal pretty much the entire runtime.

Alas, instead of gradually building up to a crescendo, the makers of this film instead decided to belabor the point.

At an absolute plodding pace they repeatedly hit you over the head with random nonsense to remind you of what you figured out in the first five minutes.

The problem of course is that by the time they get around to letting you in on the secret, you have long since stopped caring.

While there are attempts to interject deeper meaning through the use of metaphors, they are heavy handed and therefore fall flat.

Further weakening the overall impact of this movie is the exceptionally drab color scheme.

Yes, stark landscapes, spartan set design, and a washed out color palette can be evocative of certain emotions; however, when that is virtually all the audience is offered, it ultimately becomes an additional strain on their ability to engage with the story.

In what I suspect was a misguided attempt to be avant-garde, Pasture takes what could possibly have been a coherent vision and instead turns it into a jumbled mess of mildly interesting concepts.

Unfortunately for anyone who tries to sit through this entire film, the sum total of those concepts is a tedious waste of your time and attention.

Ultimately the movie succeeds most as a testament to how trying too hard can wreck an attempt to share a meaningful experience with an audience.

Video cover is great... but movie?.

...I mean its shot well enough, nothing offends me in the editing or sound... just didn't make sense? And I didn't even want it to make sense half way through the movie - it was just... there?

For me - my personal taste - there was no story that made sense? Now, if its about schizophrenia then I'm sure it will make sense of someone who experiences this, or knows someone, or takes care of someone? But for me, disjointed, not enjoyable collection of snippits of scenes with no enjoyable storyline. Forgettable as soon as it ends to be honest.

If someone asked me should they go and watch it, I would say no. Wait for something else.

Confusing and made no sense

I decided to watch this movie with my boyfriend, and we were both totally confused the whole entire movie. It made no sense I felt as confused as Sarah the main character. There wasn't really a plot to follow off of , and you never know the difference between realty and real life .

🤢

I'm only giving it a three out of ten, because the acting is quite good. Just make it make a little more sense ok? And I can watch and see goodness in all movies! This one sucks.

Couldn't stomach

Seemed like pretty good schizo picture. Woman wakes in a house with no memory and engages in strange behavior. Her "sister" tells her this is because she's a schizo but she's receiving treatment here. There's also a demented old man and little boy who seem to also be "patients" in the house. I turned it off about half hour in when there was smoking.

Provocative Erotic Avant-Garde Thriller

If you're looking for a traditional thriller full of predictable cliche flashbacks and shock and awe then maybe Pasture is not for you. This film is for those of us who enjoy something a little different, in this case a lot different.

The makers of this film went out on a limb to produce a product that makes you question your own existence. Could some of us be better off without consciousness? A series of twists and turns reveals the shocking truth...and it's definitely not what you expect. Delve into that dichotomy and you wind up in the Pasture.

Fine to pass the time

For me going in to this 100% blind with zero spoilers or clue of what I was about to watch made this a fun thrill ride for a one time watch. The ambient music, sound effects, cinematography, and execution was especially impressive. The screenplay accomplishes a lot getting by with very little. I was on the edge of my seat arrested with anticipation. Not a dull moment as a result. It was a little bit clever and refreshing I'm not going to lie. To me this was a bit of a callback to 60/70s odd folk indie scifi thriller horror. I was so relieved to find this film wasn't some generic thing written for kids & teens in mind. It was certainly an enjoyable one time watch that I would recommend. Nothing to write home about but fine to pass the time. I think the main reason this film worked for me was that I did not spoil the plot for myself ahead of time. That is nearly the only way to view this in my honest opinion. This was a cut above average thanks to some stellar writing, and really noteworthy ambient music and cinematography. Well done to those who crafted this film.

Beautiful! One for the thinkers!

While this type of film is for a certain type of thinker, those who appreciate the dark side of consciousness and human evolution will ultimately enjoy this film so much. Even if you feel lost while watching, you are still reflecting, hypothesizing and intrigued. It doesn't leave you lost, regardless. I absolutely love the brains behind this one.

This one is fascinating

This movie is one you have to pay attention to follow, it makes you think about what is really happening to this woman. It certainly is not one for someone who gets bored easily. Overall it was good.

Gorgeous and deeply thought provoking slow burn that's worth a second watch

I went into this completely blind, aside from skimming a couple vague reviews here, the blurbs, and the ratings. I was really on the fence about watching it because the IMDB score is sitting at a 3.6/10, which is wild, but LB is at a 3/5 currently. Usually when there's a drastic difference like that, I err on the LB side of trusting a film and I'm really glad I did and opted to dive into this. Seeing a description on Prime in the blurb calling it "Lynchian" really sealed it, though I'm hesitant when that term is thrown around.

It makes me really sad when movies like this don't get the ratings they deserve, honestly. I really thought this was exceptional and highly unique, and it stood out especially in a sea of mainstream current cinema that's just nothing special. I truly think this is something special.

I'm not going to give away plot points here, because I think it's important to go into this one blind like I did, or you're going to ruin it for yourself. Everything does come around full circle within the film.

This was filmed beautifully and artistically, and I would be willing to pretty much call it arthouse horror. There's multiple parts that are uncomfortable to witness, and for a large amount of the movie you're just as confused as the main character. However that's part of the beauty of it. Giving in to not knowing what's going on with her, and trying to piece together the bits and pieces you get to form a coherent narrative.

There's not a ton of dialogue, and what there is sometimes slants a bit philosophical in nature, which fits perfectly here and is to be expected. There's a fair amount of tension and anxiety because they REALLY impactfully sold the empathetic feeling of anxiety we experience connected with the main characters confusion, and an unreliable narrator leading you through her seemingly lucid moments, just as you're witness and along for the ride for her panic, trauma, turmoil, and just general loss of self. It's beautifully put to screen with an absolutely amazing array of sound effects and backing tracks, many of which rely on electrical sounds, white noise, hums, etc. I couldn't think of anything I would change to improve it and I'm highly impressed with how well conveyed every bit of that is.

Gorgeous cinematography all around, with shifting visuals at many times that are skillfully created. The acting is absolutely superb. There's not a dead or dull moment throughout.

I don't think this is a film for everyone, though. It's a very slow burn and it really is arthouse, it requires you to submit yourself to letting go of a steady and well boxed in narrative and allow yourself to explore the ideas of what you might be seeing and along on the ride for. It requires you to give in to the film in a way many movies do not. There's a number of times throughout that beg you to consider consciousness and self, the concept of I and what that ultimately means, and your answers in relation to the main character doing the same. It's actually very cerebral and deep horror if you're empathetic enough. You do get resolution if you pay attention and allow yourself to be immersed. It's not left open ended, and it does make sense.

I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes deeper films that require attention and rumination, and I would recommend a second watch after you learn the plot. I would even recommend this if you just want to watch something well crafted, but I think the low reviews are from people who likely either had incorrect expectations, aren't fans of slow and contemplative film, or don't like this kind of horror. I can't see any other reason not to like this. And yes, it'll probably be your thing if you love Lynch.

Have to watch it all to understand

If I had not finished this film I would have disliked it and probably forgotten it. It is confusing, messy, non-linear, all over the place and doesn't seem to answer any questions. Until you get to the very end. Then it makes sense. The acting is good, I watched it feeling like it was a representation of mental illness, which I suppose it is but that isn't all it is.

You can send yourself loopy trying to figure out who is who is what is real? Who is the villain? Is anyone who they say or think they are?

I'm running out of things to say about the film so I will just recommend you set aside some time and watch the whole thing otherwise don't bother because it won't make sense otherwise.
