Wade Allain-Marcus has directed the reboot of 1991's "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead." It's unclear why he bothered.
In the update, Tanya (Simone Joy Jones - fresh from "Bel Air," another retread) is seventeen and the oldest of four siblings. After a meltdown at work, their mom is sent to a resort for some mandatory R&R. Sure. Happens all the time. The kids are left in the "care" of an elderly, pistol-wielding maniac who promptly passes away. Right. Rather than bothering their mom, the kids decide to dispose of the body and fend for themselves. Of course they do. With the help of her siblings, Tanya lies about her age, gins up a fake résumé and gets a job at a company specializing in fast fashion. Uh huh. Desultory observations about adulthood, responsibility and getting by financially dribble out after that.
In the original film, the lead role was played by Christina Applegate, an actual teenager, who was in the middle of an eleven-year run on "Married... With Children." Her interactions with Joanna Cassidy, who played the owner of the fashion company, were the most redemptive elements of a film that was panned by the critics. A high-water mark was a critic labelling the film "amusing fluff." (It got a 35 score on Metacritic.) Inexplicably, the reboot hews closely to this marginal original story. The only novel element in any of this is that the family at the center of the story is Black.
The casting here is uneven. Jones, who plays Tanya, is twenty-five years old. She struggles to be convincing as a seventeen-year-old. However, her charm and effervescence give the film what little energy it's able to generate. As the two youngest siblings, Ayaami Sledge and Carter Young are cute, cuddly, chatty and clever. On the other hand, portraying the role of the lead fashionista is Nicole Richie, who has made a career out of being the daughter of singer Lionel Richie and the sidekick of Paris Hilton. With practice, diligence and hard work, her acting could someday rise to abysmal. Today is not that day. She and some of the other cast members say their lines and then pause a beat, apparently hoping for a sitcom laugh track to bail them out. Help does not arrive.
This is a film with limited aspirations that are underachieved.

They rated the new one higher than the old one? I dont blame the actors, or crew but I don't understand how a "reboot" of a cult classic is getting higher praise than the source material. This is why I can't stand RT or a lot of critics for that matter. Their opinion fits a "mold" so their colleagues won't outcast them. Ridiculous. Ludicrous. Asanine. Once again the actors and crew did their best to reboot a movie long forgotten. Next they will reboot "Adventures In Babysitting" or "Weekend at Bernies" but I'm sure the critics will give those movies praising reviews as well, no matter how good or bad it is. Dont even take my review at face value, watch both movies and make up your own minds.

A few fun nods to the OG but fell short. Super rushed and lacked the bite and reality of the original. The simple fact is, the original wouldn't fly on a logical stance these days. No one questioned it in the early 90s. The original had realistic kids and characters for that time, even Kenny's evolution couldn't be mimicked. My kids and I watched it and I immediately made them watch the original because it had a magic the remake couldn't capture. I'm all for taking nostalgia and trying to reinvent it but this fell flat. I hope no one tries a camp nowhere remake because I'd imagine it'd be as lame as this.

This is literally the most painful thing i had to sit through, which im only sitting through to see the OG's appearances. The references and how things worked out DO NOT FIT IN WITH THIS MOVIE'S REALITY! How are they going to explain the CREDIT CARD STATMENT??? The original movie DEALT IN CASH, you could make up the receipts as we saw them doing in 1991.
A behavioral retreat? Leaving five children under the age of 17 BACK IN THE STATES? No. Even with a babysitter what the heck??? No, just no. None of this makes sense. The only thing enjoyable is the house. Too short for crap too short for crap...

I suggest the kids in Hollywood get off TikTok and start reading some books because there is ZERO creativity these days.
This is yet another remake of a classic comedy that they ruined with complete incompetence.
It doesn't have any of the sharp humor of the original and they rely on shaded racism for some (non)-laughs.
Hard to believe but the story line is about 5 times more boring than the original. And whomever directed this really needs to get an Uber job because it sucks.
And that brings us to the "acting." There is none. These are basically waiters and waitresses who somehow got a leg up and were put into this fiasco.
It's not worth your time. And shame on them for making it.

I was highly excited to see this movie since the original from 1991 is a favorite. This movie is just not funny. It tries too hard. The unoriginal concept to this was a huge let down. I really tried to enjoy this but I couldn't. The movie is a huge letdown to anyone thinking this might be a funny modern version of the original.
The problem I have with this movie is it's trying to culturally change the original story. The kids were acting too grown. The attitudes these characters displayed were bothering. This movie really paints a bad picture on the original. Even though they call it re-imagined, it just seemed like a hot pile of garbage. I really wanted to rate it 2-stars, but I couldn't. I was giving this the benefit of the doubt too many times and should have just turned it off. I painfully let it play until the end.

I agree with everyone who says to stay away from this HORRENDOUS, ATROCIOUS AND RIDICULOUS movie!!!! I really tried to watch as much of it as I could but I couldn't watch anymore after the scene when the oldest girl is getting ready to go for a better paying job. The music is ridiculously terrible to the point where I had to press the mute button!!! I just couldn't take it anymore!!! The original *Don't Tell Mom thr babysitters dead* is wayyyyyyy better than this crap they threw together!!! The characters and their acting were awful too especially the boy with the gold in his mouth!!! I understand that they had to make changes to be more up to date but this movie was horrible!!! I didn't need to watch the whole movie to know that it wasn't a good movie!!! AVOID AT ALL COST!!!! DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!!!!

Right, when I stumbled upon the 2024 movie "Don't Tell Mom The Babysitters Dead", I didn't know that they had remade the 1991 movie from director Stephen Herek. And my first thought was "but why?". Yet, I opted to sit down and watch the movie with an open mind and give director Wade Allain-Marcus's 2024 movie a fair chance.
But not even five minutes into it, it was painstakingly clear that this was going to suck big time. Yup, I figured that this movie would be a pointless remade that was remade solely for the purpose of being potically correct and inclusive. And guess what, my intuition was right.
The narrative in the movie was similar to the 1991 movie where writers Neil Landau and Tara Ison put together an enjoyable and entertaining script and storyline. But this watered-down 2024 remake from writer Chuck Hayward just paled in comparison. Sure, there were some fair enough aspects to it, but it was overshadowed by the looming sense of how pointless the remake was and some insanely recially stereotypical characters that just did nothing to further the enjoyment of the movie.
And even upgrading the movie to today's sad state of society and the inclusiveness and political correctness just didn't fare well on the screen. It was too forced and desperate from writer Chuck Hayward.
The comedy in the movie fell flat and I actually weren't brought to laughter even once throughout the course of the 99 minutes that the movie ran for.
I actually wasn't familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list. And that is actually usually something I do enjoy in movies, but it just didn't play out all that well here, because of the stereotypical character gallery, annoying music and general pointlessness of the entire movie.
Wow, the music in this abysmal remake of a movie was atrocious. I absolutely loathed the music that played throughout the course of the suffering that was the 99 minutes that the movie ran for.
If you've ever watched the 1991 movie from director Stephen Herek, then stick with that one, and just completely ignore and look past this 2024 remake, because it was a dumpster fire. However, if you haven't watched the 1991 movie, then you might actually find something watchable here, I guess. I just didn't enjoy this movie.
My rating of this utterly pointless remake lands on a generous two out of ten stars. Seriously? Why remake the 1991 movie?

Came across this movie on a list of remakes in 2024. I didn't make it half way through the movie. Just so bad.
Read a summary of the end and I was glad I skipped it.
The remake wasn't needed at all. It falls in line with a long list of updated remakes that just fall flat.
Nothing of substance was added by remaking a cult classic.
The problems and issues from the original don't translate well in an updated movie.
Acting wasn't great. The movie felt like a launching pad kinda a movie that had too many failures to launch.
Having Danelle Harris make a cameo was a nice call back to the original.

It was ok. Passed the time.
But I can't get past the fact that these kids in 2024 weren't clued up enough to even consider that the babysitter was someone relative and check that before they dumped her body. Even the kid that was compassionate to crows! Thats easy to do these days and I think kids of today would be that thoughtful, if they're good kids, like these were. So the fact they just dumped her, even if she was a cranky old lady made me not care much for the kids at all.
But also the filling her with alcohol and driving her in to a tree, might have worked; however when she was pulled from the water there would be no water in her lungs and an investigation would begin. So not quite an open shut case.... Which would be fine, if they didn't end it with a news story trying to wrap it up neatly.
Just seems like they could have done better. This story worked in the 90's, not so much in 2024. That's on the writers.

It's really funny and written for this generation without overly trying to be. The script is good and so are the jokes. It's very much a remake with so many similar aspects of the original. I love that they filmed at the same house and even used the same music. It was so heartwarming and connects both movies so well.
My only cons really is that the original made you believe it was a huge fashion job and fashion show at the end, and in this movie, it falls more flat. The fashion isn't that good and the office just seemed like a set. They didn't have the walking around the factory workers scene so it didn't seem like a full on fashion warehouse. Just seems like the budget wasn't as big so they did the best they could.
It's a worthy remake for sure. The original is just such a classic. All I know is you'll be happy to hear "I'm right on top of that Rose" in theaters.

First not every movie needs a remake. But this was beyond pathetic. It as if they forgot it was the 90s. The whole idea was Christina Applegate being the main character.
. You know married with children. None of the actors are popular. It's like let's make a black version. It's just shows Hollywoods total lack of originality
The original based on a very 90s times. The movie was more historical then just a regular movie.
It goes from one nonsequrior to another. It like like let's try to be cool because.. The overall feeling it's boring and failure of blacking a movie.
I'm so happy it won't be released on DVD. It's a movie best forgotten...

That headline isn't necessarily a criticism, but my reviews and ratings are subjective. And this movie leans towards a chick flick. There is still some guy humor, as well as jokes that are funny regardless of gender. I laughed a decent amount and there are a few hilarious parts.
But then it switches back to girl humor. Or a romance plot with EXTENSIVE scenes on dates. There are even life lessons. Again, these aren't necessarily bad things. They're just not why I watch comedy movies.
I found the lead to be the least funny. But the three younger siblings are hilarious and memorable characters. And the babysitter cracked me up.
I had an okay time watching this. But it's probably more enjoyable if you like chick flicks or are looking for a date movie.

Film was shocking but Jordan Wards song boosted it from a 2/10 to a 5/10. Can't go wrong with a bit of Jordan Ward. In my opinion if Jordan Ward didn't make "Player Two" for this film it wouldn't even make it to theatres because of how appalling it was. Some parts were funny but most parts tried to hard to make the audience chuckle and just failed. Might just be me but Jordan ward should have got the main roll for this film based on how good his song was. All of his music as absolutely amazing and would suggest you listen to his music than watch this abomination. Go see it if you want but to be expecting a good film.
Wow. Unoriginal! Same plot, same story... This has got to stop. Cant Hollywood producers be original anymore? "Lets remake a successful 90's movie, but we will use black people!!" That would be like remaking "Friday" with white people!! Come on?! Lets get back to making original movies, regardless of skintones, I prefer originality. Please, for the love of god, leave Caddyshack, House Party. And Disorderlies alone?

This movie was so cute and stayed true to the original. I watched it with my 13 and 16 year old teenage boy and girl and they enjoyed it as well.
Sadly I believe a lot of the negative comments are due to the hue of the cast being changed, not the content itself. I highly suggest watching it for yourself. I laughed and enjoyed comparing certain scenes although most of the changes made didn't impact the script whatsoever. I was even impressed with Nicole's Richie's comedic acting, something she's definitely not know for. Loved the cameo of our original Rose. We would absolutely rewatch; the producers and actors did a great job updating the story and honoring the original.

I don't usually like remakes. But this was one of the better remakes I've seen. I was raised in the 90's and I have seen the original movie many times over, and I must say that this movie did the original justice. It's funny, and enjoyable. The negative reviews written makes me wonder what is the race/ethnicity of the person behind the message...smh...BE YOUR OWN JUDGE if this movie is for you then it's for you, and if it's not then it's not. Plain and simple. But I gave this movie a 10 rating because I laughed, laughed, and those young "black" actors/actresses did a phenomenal job. Awesome film.

Quirky humor and lots of nostalgia from my childhood and the original movie.
Great movie for Teens and Young adults. So happy to see Nicole Richie as an actress I think she did an outstanding job on the big screen.
Simone Joy did a phenomenal job leading the way for young actress's to follow. I'm actually Going to watch again because I'm sure I'll giggle with laughter 😂 . Loved that it showcases some of the beautiful sites around Los Angeles.
I agree with this that the nyc times said
Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's DeadNYT Critic's PickDirected by Wade Allain-MarcusComedyR1h 39m Don't tell helicopter parents, but the gleefully transgressive flicks that entertained a generation of latchkey wildlings are coming back in style. Wade Allain-Marcus's rollicking update of the 1991 cult favorite keeps the plot - a 17-year-old slacker named Tanya (Simone Joy Jones) is forced to support her even lazier younger siblings (Donielle Hansley Jr., Ayaamii Sledge and Carter Young) - and amps up the immoral humor. It's a snappy, gutsy comedy about how kids are spoiled and ignorant, and yet the adult workplace is only passingly more mature.

I'm a huge fan of the original film. I REALLY REALLY liked this take on the story. It's original, it's fun, it's fresh.
I used to watch the original DTMTBD all the time when I was younger. It was one of my favorites. I've always thought it would be a perfect movie to remake for the modern age and this new take did not disappoint. It's a shame they didn't push any marketing for the remake when it was in theaters for (basically) a weekend because I was really impressed with the way they adapted it. Especially as a fan of the original it really worked for me. I saw the work, they did a great job. They make it its own thing while still staying true to the og film. It's a shame they had to sell it to BET+ because I think it deserved a bigger buyer. I just hope it doesn't get forgotten in streaming oblivion because I think they did a great job. Hats off to them, truly. I hope it gets more eyes as time goes on. Good work.
The writing truly felt inspired. The comedy hit its marks. Some cynics might at some point say they wanted more jokes. I don't judge movies by my expectations, I judge based on what they gave me. This was a funny, sweet, realistic modern take on a classic story.
The cast was perfect. Everyone played their parts perfectly. We did delete one of siblings from the previous movie, but they didn't necessarily need that character and they made it work just fine. So many standouts in the cast. Everyone killed it. Every cast member in the main family. The romantic lead. Even the supporting roles as the party friends and office antagonists. June Squibb did great. Nicole Richie in her best role since Nikki Fre$h (Big Fan). GREAT cameos and slick references to the og. Everyone made this take on the story feel grounded and realistic. The jokes landed. They made it feel real and believable and fresh and entertaining.
If anyone from the cast or crew reads this... Thank you so much from a big fan! I had a great time and it felt like a childhood dream come true.

Kind of eh to start but then you get wrapped up in this whole crazy story and then boom you're at the end and you're like whoa😳I forgot that even happened! It's a mix of two tales that we've seen other places before but it makes for a wild ride in a different car. I kind of wish Mrs. Pat was in it more, that's really what I expected. Simone really played a great role and her switch from being a kid to being an adult part way through was pretty seamless. Looking forward to seeing her play more parts in the future. This was overall a pretty great and entertaining watch and I'd definitely watch again.
