Under the guise of a conventional bio-pic, with all of the dilution and sweetening that the commercial format entails, Fogel offers a wide-ranging and deep-rooted critique of American officialdom, of the political underpinnings of American society.

The film’s general comic tone makes its darker moments stand out.

It’s not a typical whistleblower movie, like “The Insider” or “Official Secrets” (both excellent), but more of a prickly character portrait, imbued with humor and a headstrong sense of defiance (courtesy of co-writer Kerry Howley, channeling Winner’s voice).

A perfectly agreeable, if limited, piece of work.

As far as zeitgeisty nonfiction goes, Winner is one of the better ones, at once entertaining and illuminative.

[A] frustratingly glib biopic.

A sweeping biopic that presents her as something like an American Girl doll for the “I’m not like other girls” set.

Winner is a bold idea that almost immediately proves itself to be a misconceived mess.

Destined to fade into obscurity in the presence of the other two films about Reality Winner, Fogel’s version should at least indicate to other filmmakers that they must leave this story alone and move on to other preoccupations.
