In 1989, Brian Yuzna made his directorial debut on Society. 35 years later, screenwriter Zeph E. Daniel peels back the layers to share his chilling truth behind the notorious cult classic in a new documentary.

The Darkside of Society will be released digitally May 13 from Uncork’d Entertainment.

Society‘s surreal and grotesque portrayal of elite depravity stunned audiences and secured its place as a horror essential. But while the film’s infamous “shunting” scene left an indelible mark on genre fans, its writer was enduring a very real psychological unraveling behind the scenes.

A raw, unfiltered examination of art, memory, and the dark corners of the creative process, the doc explores Daniel’s revelation that the film’s twisted plot was more autobiographical than he ever intended — a subconscious manifestation of repressed childhood trauma.

John Carpenter's influence on the horror genre is matched by few, and there is a good reason why his name is held in such high regard. Carpenter essentially created the modern slasher genre with Halloween; he was not the first, but he established the rules that many still go by to this day. A satire on the rich versus poor divide...

Lights On, the Turin-based world sales company, has made a double swoop on Locarno titles, taking international sales rights to Lucy Kerr’s “Family Portrait” and “Dreaming & Dying” (“Hao Jiu Bu Jian”), written and directed by Singapore’s Nelson Yeo.

Both play in Locarno’s Cineasti del Presenti Sierra, focused on new talent. Locarno’s 2023 lineup was announced July 5.

‘Family Portrait’

The first feature from Kerr, a Texas-born filmmaker and video and installation artist, “Family Portrait” turns on a sprawling Texas family that gets together on a morning to take a group picture.

The mother disappears; the rest of the family seem reluctant to take the photos; one of the daughters, Katy, sets off to find her. Doing so, the synopsis says, she loses herself and her family.

UK sales agent and genre specialist Jinga Films has closed key deals on two titles, Girl Next and Night At The Eagle Inn, following last November’s American Film Market.

US director Larry Wade Carrell’s Girl Next has sold to High Fliers for UK and Ireland, Venal Virulent for Germany, HBO for East Europe (for pay TV and subscription video on demand only), Kino-Land for Russia/Cis, Encripta for Latin America and Danse Macabre for Australia and New Zealand.
