Abigail Spencer Boards ‘Best Medicine’ at Fox
Image
Fox has found the female lead for its forthcoming series Best Medicine.

Abigail Spencer (Grey’s Anatomy, Rectify) will star opposite Josh Charles in the series, an adaptation of the long-running British dramedy Doc Martin. Spencer will play Louisa Glasson, a teacher in the small East Coast fishing village where Dr. Martin Best (Charles) relocates after leaving a decorated career as a surgeon in Boston.

Fox describes Best Medicine as an hour-long comedy following Martin, who abruptly leaves his post in Boston to work as a general practitioner in the town where he spent summers as a kid. “Unfortunately,” the show’s logline reads, “Martin’s blunt and borderline rude bedside manner rubs the quirky, needy locals the wrong way, especially local school teacher Louisa Glasson. However, tenacity is the creed of everyone in their small village, and the people who live there may be exactly what the doctor ordered.

“I am not Charlie Sheen”: Ashton Kutcher Was Well Aware of the Hate He Was Getting After Chuck Lorre’s Infamous Two and a Half Men Controversy
Image
As much as Chuck Lorre’s hit sitcom, Two and a Half Men, is known for its remarkable run on television, the show has also become memorable for the controversies surrounding it. And one of its biggest controversies led Ashton Kutcher to replace its lead star Charlie Sheen following his inappropriate behavior.

And much like Sheen himself, many of his fans were not pleased with the change, prompting a wave of backlash for the actor and his character, which has lingered over the years. And Kutcher appeared to be well aware of the audience’s sentiments, as evidenced by his appearance at the 2011 Emmy Awards, where he openly mocked Sheen on stage.

NBC canceled a surprisingly low number of shows in 2024
Image
The 2023-2024 TV season was one of the wildest seasons of television fans have ever witnessed due in large part to the historic writers’ and actors’ strikes that resulted in delayed returns for broadcast’s scripted series and some of their shortest seasons ever. Rather than shows coming back in the fall, scripted series didn’t kick off their new seasons until the early months of 2024 which put the networks in an interesting position when it came time to determine which shows would be brought back for the current season.

For many networks, this meant making some incredibly difficult decisions which led to handfuls of cancellations of several hit shows. CBS fans were hit particularly hard as the network chose to end seven amazing series in 2024 including some of the most-watched shows of the season. Luckily, things weren’t as bad for NBC fans.

Of the 12 scripted series that made up its primetime lineup,...

4 NBC shows were canceled in 2024 (with another moving to Peacock)
Image
We know not all shows will make it through a year, but that doesn’t mean we have to be happy about cancellations. NBC opted to cancel four shows in 2024, and another one is on the move to a streaming platform. Let’s take a look back at what we won’t watch in 2025.

The 2023–2024 TV season was certainly an odd one. With the writers strike and then the actors strike throughout the summer and fall of 2023, it made it much harder to get our favorite shows back. Most of them were held for the midseason, but others were able to get fall slots.

You would think that the fall slots would allow for a success. Sadly, that wasn’t the case for one series in particular. Meanwhile, another was canceled even before the strike action started, but didn’t officially end until 2024.

Jon Cryer’s Two and a Half Men Salary Was Shockingly Low Compared to the Show’s Problem Child Charlie Sheen
Image
Starring alongside Charlie Sheen and Angus T. Jones, Jon Cryer took on one of the leading roles in the hit CBS sitcom, Two and a Half Men. However, the actor had a significantly lower salary compared to his co-star, who saw a controversial end to his journey on the sitcom following his public breakdown and rant against the showrunner Chuck Lorre.

Two and a Half Men | Credit: CBS

Cryer portrayed the role of Alan Harper, Charlie Harper’s brother, throughout its 12-season run. However, despite his long tenure on the show, his pay was not even close to the level of Sheen’s earnings at the time of his departure.

NBC Decides Against Renewing New Comedy Series

Extended Family was granted a pilot episode in 2022. The pilot wound up being a great success and several big names signed up to be part of the show. Some of the names included in the project were Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men), Abigail Spencer (Grey’s Anatomy), and Donald Faison (Scrubs).

However, when they started filming, it was delayed by the strikes, which went on for several months. They were able to film six episodes before the strikes, leaving the remaining seven episodes left to film once production resumed four days after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Reba McEntire Comedy a Go as NBC Renews ‘Lopez vs. Lopez,’ Cancels ‘Extended Family’

Ahead of next week’s upfront presentation to Madison Avenue ad buyers, NBC has solidified its comedy lineup for the 2024-25 broadcast season.

The network has handed out a series order to the multicamera comedy Happy’s Place, starring Reba McEntire, and renewed George Lopez’s half-hour Lopez vs. Lopez for a third season. Additionally, NBC has canceled rookie comedy Extended Family, starring Jon Cryer.

Happy’s Place, which was picked up to pilot in late January, revolves around Bobbie (McEntire), who inherits her father’s restaurant and is less than thrilled to discover that she has a new business partner in the half-sister she never knew she had. The series reunites McEntire with the team behind her eponymous 2001 sitcom, including showrunner Kevin Abbott and co-star Melissa Peterman. Bubble Shows ‘The Conners,’ ‘Walker,’ ‘Lopez vs. Lopez’ and Other Series Await Their Fate as Upfronts Approach
Image
Some of this TV season’s blood has already been spilled — looking at you, “NCIS: Hawai’i” — but as we head toward upfronts week, there are still a number of broadcast shows “on the bubble.”

But as the networks settle in on a diet of mostly stable franchises and fewer series pilots, there’s also less primetime schedule frenzy this year. The days before upfronts week which would normally mean a rapid fire few days of broadcast series renewals and cancellations announcements. But normal left the building a long time ago.

The broadcast network portion of upfronts has been so significantly pared down from years past that it hardly resembles what it used to be. These days, most of the broadcast networks announce renewals and cancellations well ahead of their actual presentations.

Take CBS, which has already announced its new fall and spring schedules as well as all of its renewals and cancellations.

‘Night Court’ Renewed For Season 3 By NBC; Episode Count Revealed
Image
It’s official — Night Court will be returning for a third season on NBC.

The renewal of the comedy sequel headlined by Melissa Rauch, who also executive produces, and the original series’ John Larroquette, was never in doubt. As Deadline reported earlier this week, the delay was caused by NBC and producing studio Warner Bros. TV going back-and-forth on the size of the order. Season 3 will ultimately consist of 18 episodes, I hear.

The contract for the series is believed to stipulate 22-episode seasons while NBC asked for a 18-episode third season, sources said. Because the sitcom, a followup to the 1984 NBC sitcom, launched in midseason 2023, its first season counted 16 episodes. Its second season, whose production was interrupted by the strikes, was comprised of 13 episodes, in line of the rest of NBC’s popular scripted series this season. Its season finale aired March 26.

Night Court is the first of NBC’s three current comedies to earn a spot on the 2024-25 schedule; decisions have yet to be made on Lopez vs. Lopez and Extended Family. NBC also has one new comedy, St. Denis Medical, on tap for next season, and a pilot called Happy’s Place starring Reba McEntire.

Night Court averaged 3.73 million viewers in Nielsen’s seven-day linear ratings for its second season — down a good amount from its return in 2023 but still ranking as NBC’s most watched comedy. As with most scripted shows, it picks up a substantial audience boost via streaming; NBC didn’t provide detailed figures (as is usually the case with streaming) but said...

Night Court Season 3 Gets Mixed Update In New Report
Image
Talks for Night Court Season 3 renewal are ongoing due to episode count negotiations with co-producer Warner Bros. Television. Despite cast changes, Night Court's ratings remain strong and stand a good chance of renewal compared to other NBC comedies. The reboot continues to bring back original series characters like Roz.

Night Court season 3 gets a mixed update in a new report. Led by Big Bang Theory's Melissa Rauch as Abby Stone, with Dan Rubin as showrunner, the reboot follows the daughter of the late Harry Stone from the original series. With a sunny outlook on a job that her co-workers are not nearly as fond of, Abby convinces a reluctant Dan Fielding (John Larroquette) to become a public defender. In its second installment, the NBC comedy has welcomed several Night Court original cast, such as Marsha Warfield to reprise the role of Roz in a recurring capacity.

In a new report from Deadline,...

Law & Order: Organized Crime Gets Renewed for Season 5 But With a Catch
Image
NBC has revealed the future of the spinoff series Law & Order: Organized Crime. Following rumors that the show might move to Peacock to continue, it's now been confirmed that this is the plan for the Dick Wolf drama series.

Per Deadline, Law & Order: Organized Crime has been renewed for a fifth season consisting of 10 episodes. However, the renewal comes with a big change, as the show is moving off of broadcast television. As prior reports suggested, Organized Crime will become a streaming show by moving to Peacock for Season 5. Meanwhile, Law & Order and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit will remain on NBC, though new episodes will be made available for streaming the next day on Peacock, joining Organized Crime.

‘Law & Order: Organized Crime’ Moving To Peacock For Season 5
Image
The last NBC drama series whose fate had not been determined, Law & Order: Organized Crime, is finalizing a deal for a 10-episode Season 5 renewal, sources said. As Deadline reported exclusively this month, the Wolf Entertainment series will be relocating from NBC to sibling Peacock, with the new season streaming exclusively on the platform.

The move gives the NBCUniversal streamer an original Dick Wolf drama series to go with the Wolf library and next-day runs of the company’s remaining NBC series Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., Chicago Med, Law & Order and Law & Order: Svu, which are among the platform’s most viewed titles.

‘CSI: Vegas’ & ‘So Help Me Todd’ Canceled By CBS
Image
CBS has canceled CSI: Vegas after three seasons and So Help Me Todd after two. The news is not surprising as Deadline revealed earlier this week that both dramas were heavily on the bubble and in grave danger.

That despite CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd being solid ratings performers. With the entire CBS schedule doing well this season and three new drama series joining in 2024-25, NCIS: Origins, Matlock and Watson (in addition to a second season of the Australian NCIS: Sydney), the network was faced with painful decisions, and So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas are the least watched CBS drama series this spring in both linear and multi-platform ratings.

In most current linear Nielsen viewership (2/12 to date), CSI: Vegas, which improved its time period, is at #21 among all non-sports broadcast programs with 6.234M viewers and So Help Me Todd at #22 with 6.224M. That is more...

ABC Renewal Status Report: ‘The Conners’ & ‘Not Dead Yet’

Second in a series on broadcast network series renewals. This is a rarity — it’s still mid-April and ABC has already made decisions on all of its existing drama series.

The popular Nathan Fillion cop series The Rookie was the last to get word yesterday with a Season 7 renewal after some intense negotiations with the show’s new lead studio, Lionsgate, which acquired The Rookie producer eOne in December. It joins recently renewed Grey’s Anatomy, 9-1-1 and Will Trent, with The Good Doctor and Station 19 ending their runs.

Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 Gets Intriguing Update (Including Potential Streaming Twist)
Image
Law & Order: Organized Crime season 5 is still on the bubble at NBC. The show's success on Peacock suggests that it has a possible streaming future if canceled. If it becomes a Peacock exclusive, the future of Organized Crime could look very different.

The future of Law & Order: Organized Crime has gotten an intriguing update. The show is the sixth spinoff of the franchise and one of just three that remain on the air, a roster which also includes the flagship show and Special Victims Unit. Although Oc follows serialized storylines as opposed to the episodic scenarios presented by the other shows in the universe, it frequently features crossovers with those shows and, in fact, lead character Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) originated on Svu, having been a lead character for the show's first 12 seasons.

Per Deadline, Law & Order: Organized Crime season 5 is still on the bubble. In fact, it...

Night Court Gets Encouraging Renewal Update Following Season 2 Finale
Image
It's still not guaranteed that Night Court will be back for a third season at NBC, as the show remains on the bubble. However, the latest news on the revival series is encouraging.

Per Deadline, the renewal odds are high for Night Court. The series is the most-watched and highest-rated of the three comedies that are on the renewal bubble, alongside Lopez vs Lopez and Extended Family. Reportedly, negotiations with the show's producer, Warner Bros. Television, are ongoing, and the revival series is "considered likely to get renewed." The news comes after the show wrapped up its second season on NBC on March 26.

NBC Renewal Status Report: ‘Law & Order: Organized Crime’ Mulls Move To Peacock; ‘Night Court’, ‘Lopez vs Lopez’ & ‘Extended Family’ Waiting
Image
Exclusive: First in a series on broadcast network series renewals. NBC is well ahead of the game this season on the renewal-decision front, handing early pickups to freshman dramas Found and The Irrational as well as One Chicago, Law & Order and Law & Order: Svu while canceling Quantum Leap, La Brea and Magnum Pi.

That leaves just a headful of shows on the bubble, mostly on the comedy side. The one drama series still waiting to hear its fate is Law & Order: Organized Crime. It’s always been an outlier, a departure from the Dick Wolf procedural brand with its darker and serialized storytelling. Possibly as a result, the series starring Christopher Meloni has performed below the five other Wolf dramas on the linear NBC network, while it has reportedly done well on Peacock.

That last part may prove key to Organized Crime‘s future, which has fans so...

‘Quantum Leap’ Canceled at NBC
Image
There will be no leap to season three for NBC’s Quantum Leap.

The network has canceled the reboot of the 1989 series after a two-season run, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

The series starring Raymond Lee wrapped its sophomore season in February and ranked as one of the broadcast network’s lowest-rated scripted originals.

Quantum Leap, which was produced in-house at Universal Television, earned a speedy season two renewal as NBC kept production going in a bid to have scripted originals during the writers and actors strikes.

The follow-up to the original series hailed from Martin Gero and Dean Georgaris, who exec-produced alongside Deborah Pratt, Chris Grismer and Alex Berger. Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt developed the series and served as showrunners on the update.

Quantum Leap is the first NBC cancellation of the season and comes after the network previously renewed five of its six Dick Wolf shows. NBC...

Peacock to Add 16 Unscripted Bravo Titles in April, Including 'Real Housewives,' 'Shahs of Sunset,' More
Rachel Zoe, Rodger Berman, and Brad Goreski in The Rachel Zoe Project (2008)
Peacock wants to get nostalgic with some of Bravo’s most famous past titles, including ‘The Rachel Zoe Project,’ ‘Million Dollar Listing’ and more.

The 2023 strikes from Hollywood’s biggest actors and writers’ unions were eminently avoidable, but studios chose to play hardball with union reps and force work stoppages. TV networks and streaming services are just now getting their scripted titles back on screens, but Peacock is pulling a move that might make audiences think the strikes are still going! This month, Peacock will be adding over 15 titles pulled from the pile of unscripted reality shows from Bravo’s past; old fan-favorites like “The Real Housewives of D.C.” and many more are coming to the platform in April.

Newly imported Bravo titles will begin arriving on Peacock on April 15. Sixteen titles have been announced for the rollout, and Peacock pledges that more will be included. Peacock is already home...

Law & Order & Law & Order: Svu renewed at NBC — Is Law & Order: Organized Crime headed for cancellation?
Tony Goldwyn, Maura Tierney, Hugh Dancy, Reid Scott, Mehcad Brooks, and Odelya Halevi in New York - Police judiciaire (1990)
It’s a good day for fans of Law & Order and Law & Order: Svu, as NBC has officially picked up both legal dramas for the 2024-25 season.

This exciting news means that Law & Order will continue for Season 24, and Law & Order: Svu will continue for Season 26.

The renewals were announced alongside the pickups of Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago P.D.

Ominously missing from the renewals was the Christopher Meloni-led Law & Order: Organized Crime, currently in its fourth season, but the network is saying that the show’s future is “in discussion.”

The youngest entry in the sprawling Law & Order universe has been saddled with behind-the-scenes issues since its inception and has gone through countless showrunners.

The series typically takes on more serialized storylines as opposed to the procedural nature of the other two Thursday night dramas.
