Image
David Spade and Theo Von will star in and produce a buddy comedy, “Busboys,” which they wrote and are self-financing.

Set in a border town in Arizona, the movie follows David and Theo, two friends who “think becoming waiters will solve all of their problems. They are wrong,” per the logline.

“We are looking forward to gracing everyone with this comedy that no one asked for,” said Spade in a statement.

At Midnight Director Jonah Feingold Brings A Fairytale Vibe To His New Rom-Com [Exclusive Interview]
Image
In the upcoming Paramount+ film "At Midnight," Monica Barbaro ("Top Gun: Maverick") plays Sophie, an actor starring in a superhero film with her boyfriend and fellow actor, Adam. When she finds him cheating on her with a crew member, she has to stay quiet about it because of her career. While in Mexico shooting the end of their movie, she meets ambitious junior hotel manager Alejandro, and finds herself continually meeting up with him at midnight.

"At Midnight" has a fairytale feel to it, complete with animated opening credits and camera work that pays homage to classic rom-coms of the past. I recently spoke to director Jonah Feingold ("Dating & New York") about his take on the film's style, Martin Scorsese's comments about superhero films, whether there was a plan to have Boneta (who has a musical background) sing, and what films inspired his work on "At Midnight."

‘At Midnight’ Director Jonah Feingold Convinced 33 Investors to Finance His First Indie Film. Now He’s Made a Studio Movie for Paramount+
Image
Filmmaker Jonah Feingold has always been charmed by the idea of happily ever after. But as a hardened New Yorker, born and raised in Manhattan, he’s not naive enough to believe that’s always the way a love story ends.

In his first film, the modern romantic comedy “Dating and New York,” which follows two commitment-phobic millennials, he let audiences fall for the central couple (played by Jaboukie Young-White and Francesca Reale) for 90 minutes before breaking them up in the final seconds of the story. After the movie, which premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in 2021, was released by IFC Films to the world, he recalls getting a few angry emails about the ending.

“I don’t think, in a modern New York dating world, they would end up together,” Feingold, 32, says over coffee at Manhattan’s Marlton Hotel. “I was just trying to be honest.”

Feingold is revisiting the...

Director Jonah Feingold Interview: At Midnight
Image
At Midnight is a romantic comedy that feels both classic and fresh at the same time. While the film hits all the beats of a traditional rom-com, features charismatic stars, and boasts a beautiful and mood-setting musical score, At Midnight brings something fresh to the genre in part by making Mexico itself a star. Showcasing locations from the beach to Mexico City, and with a bi-cultural love story told in Spanish as much as English, At Midnight is likely to make viewers fall for a country even as its protagonists fall for each other.

At Midnight boasts many strengths, from the chemistry-filled performances of Diego Boneta (Alejandro) and Monica Barbaro (Sophie) to the aforementioned musical score by Grant Fonda. The direction of Jonah Feingold (who also co-wrote the film) was also stellar. While Feingold's first film, Dating and New York, was a strong entry into the New York rom-com subgenre,...

Young-White joined the Comedy Central late-night comedy series as a correspondent in 2018 and quietly exited the show recently.

Focus Features landed another specialty success with The Card Counter, Paul Schrader’s biggest directorial opening in over 30 years since 1987’s Light of Day and with a likely No. 8 ranking at the North American box office this weekend.

‘Dating & New York’ Review: An Outdated Phone-Filtered Rom-Com
Image
“Dating & New York” has a natural feel for its Manhattan milieu and the various ways in which cell phones and dating apps have reconfigured courtship dynamics. Unfortunately, those are the only fresh components of this otherwise routine romantic comedy, which despite a number of self-conscious touches that suggest an innovative approach to familiar material, Winning chemistry between its stars may help it make inroads with millennial audiences when it debuts in theaters and on VOD on Sept. 10 (following its online premiere at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival), but most will likely find their own iPhones a more engaging viewing option.

On a dating app called “Meet Cute,” Milo and Wendy (Francesca Reale) hit it off, sleep together and then go their separate ways, only to reconnect after their respective best friends, Hank (Brian Muller) and Jessie (Catherine Cohen), fall for each other. Rather than attempt a traditional union,...

‘Dating & New York’: Two Millennials Hilariously Struggle with Dating Apps and Friends-With-Benefits
Image
Photo: ‘Dating & New York’ Is romance still real and alive in today’s world full of social media likes, dating apps, and the desire to always have something new? ‘Dating & New York’ answers this question in its own way by fictionally pairing up two millennials Wendy (Francesca Reale) and Milo (Jaboukie Young-White) who meet on a dating app in New York ultimately leading to a successful one-night stand. ‘Dating & New York’ will be writer-director Jonah Feingold’s feature film debut, and I think he absolutely nailed what the future of modern romantic comedies will look like. UTA Signs ‘Dating & New York’ Director Jonah Feingold
Image
Exclusive: UTA has signed director, writer and producer Jonah Feingold for worldwide representation in all areas.

Most recently, Feingold’s feature film debut Dating & New York premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival and has already been acquired by IFC Films for domestic distribution in fall 2021. Blue Fox purchased the international rights to the film, which Feingold wrote, directed and produced.

Dating & New York follows a budding app romance between two twentysomethings, played by breakout stars Jabuokie Young-White and Francesca Reale, against the backdrop of Feingold’s native New York City. Catherine Cohen, Brian Muller, Jerry Ferrara, Arturo Castro, Taylor Hill and Alex Moffat round out the cast.

As a lifelong fan of the pioneers of classic romantic comedies, Feingold invoked his own personal experiences and his generation’s challenges of dating in the modern era – where apps and cell phones make it both easier and more complicated – to make the film.

‘Dating & New York’ Trailer: “Friends With Benefits” RomCom Looks At The Age Of Millennial Hookups
Image
Friends with benefits is not a new concept, but friends with benefits in the millennial age? Maybe that’s a slightly different view of the phenomenon, especially as millennials and gen Z are said to move fluidly between partners, much more so than Gen X and above. Directed by Jonah Feingold and having premiered earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival, “Dating & New York” stars up and comers Francesca Reale, Jaboukie Young-White and Jerry Ferrara.

Official Trailer for Modern NYC Romantic Comedy 'Dating & New York'
Dating & New York (2021)
"Important question - what happens if one of you catches feelings?" IFC Films has debuted a trailer for an indie romantic comedy titled Dating & New York, the feature directorial debut of NYC filmmaker Jonah Feingold after numerous short films previously. This already premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year and opens in theaters + VOD this September. After an electric one-night stand, two dating-app-matched New York millennials draw up a "Best Friends with Benefits" contract to avoid the pitfalls of their past relationships – what could possibly go wrong? Rhetorical question, because every film that has ever tried to deal with this always gets back to the reminder that oh yeah, feelings will "ruin" everything. Or perhaps feelings are there to guide is in the right direction. Dating & New York stars Francesca Reale and Jaboukie Young-White, plus Jerry Ferrara, Catherine Cohen, and Brian Muller. This looks super adorable and cute and quirky,...

Image
With its signature liveliness, unapologetic attitude, and visual splendor, New York City has so long been a set of romantic comedies that this location has become a cliché. So, how does Jonah Feingold, the writer/director of “Dating & New York,” aim to make his mark on this sparkling skyline? By creating a postmodern rom-com that blatantly snatches from iconic influences to deliver an irreverent commentary on the genre and modern romance.

In ‘Dating & New York,’ Audiences Get a Rom-Com for the Dating App Age
Image
In “Dating & New York,” the film’s central romance isn’t your grandparents’ — or even your parents’ — standard meet cute.

The main characters, single, 20-something New Yorkers Milo (Jaboukie Young-White) and Wendy (Francesca Reale), don’t bump into each other at a bookstore or in the produce section of Trader Joe’s. No, the eventual will-they-or-won’t-they couple become acquainted on a dating app.

“There are so many new rules to the game of modern dating,” says the film’s 30-year-old director Jonah Feingold, who lives in Brooklyn. “Even back when our parents were meeting, it seemed very wholesome, simple. You sat next to each other on an airplane, you were neighbors, you met in law school.”

That’s not the way that many millennials are getting to know one another. A Stanford University study found that nearly half of heterosexual couples met their romantic partner online. It’s...

Image
IFC Films has acquired rights to the millennial romantic comedy “Dating & New York” ahead of its premiere at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.

IFC Films plans to release “Dating & New York” in theaters and on digital platforms in September. At Tribeca, the movie will have its world premiere on Sunday, June 13.

A fairytale with a uniquely modern twist, “Dating & New York” follows single 20somethings Milo (Young-White) and Wendy (Reale), who meet on a dating app. Rather than ghosting each other or settling into a relationship, the two draft an ironclad friends-with-benefits contract that will test the resolve of their otherwise seemingly perfect dynamic. For Wendy and Milo, their fate is decided when one of them catches real feelings, and they must figure out how to remain friends,...

Francesca Reale
Francesca Reale, Jaboukie Young-White, Catherine Cohen (High Maintenance), and Brian Muller (The Deuce) star in Dating in New York, an indie comedy from first-time feature helmer Jonah Feingold.
