As someone who can understand that good westerns died with the 21st century, I didn't mind this movie at all. It had its flaws but it still had everything a western needs. There were a few parts I even found comical.

This movie is a throwback to the B-westerns of yesteryear. Trouble is, those old B-westerns are feats of epic cinema compared to this 2020 version of the American Western. And it's a shame, too. Here is THE vehicle that launched many an outstanding and treasured career - Wayne, Mitchum, Stewart, McQueen, Marvin, etc . . . Only these "leading" actors forgot to do their home work. The acting is "Al-Gore-wooden-like" as each actor struggles to strike their best pose to reveal their best side as they regurgitate their canned lines. There is no emotion or meaning to their words - they're just canned lines to be said, not communicated, just said. The Shea Sizemore screenplay makes sense, but it didn't get pulled together. The score adds nothing to the movie. In fact, at times it would be best if there were no score. I lay the quality of this film at the feet of the one to blame - Director Brent Christy. I apparently have never seen a Brent Christy-directed film - I hope I don't again. This film is all over the place, chasing it's tail. Siskel & Ebert - Beware!

The Warrant DID have some value - lovely, fine horses, authentic tackle, and riders that could ACTUALLY ride, with backwoods Civil War battles between Confed and Yankee footsoldiers. There was just something a bit phony about the setup, for example Hero, John Breaker, lacked that classical taciturn-ness - opting instead for 1970s "whimsical". But I did like, Steve McQueen, (grandson of his namesake) putting in a most solid performance, a face for the Future.

I've seen amateur civil war reenactment gatherings by retirees being filmed by a 5th grade great-grandson turn out better than this film.

Shea Sizemore's writing experience in short films should've kept this screenplay as a short, instead of this terribly written with lame dialogued poor excuse of a western with comic relief 85 min mess. Even for an 85 min runtime film, the slow pacing and lack of any real unpredictable story made this film feel like 3 hours. Add to that the overbearing and annoying score, and you'll be pulling your hair out.

All actors seemed to act is if they were in a stage play, looking out to no where and overcompensating their lines, it almost felt like a parody.

This is experienced Camera and Electrical Department turned newb director Brent Christy's third film, and it really shows. He failed in directing his cast, proper camera angles and settings.

The cinematography and colors were the only redeeming qualities in this film. Watch the trailer, and you've seen this film. This has to be the worst western I've ever seen. It's a very generous 3/10 from me.

The acting was pitiful at best. Each scene was as if they were on a poorly executed high school play. As if each camera cut the Director was saying go and they performed horrible. It was really bad I turned it off after 15 minutes. Do not waste your time or money on this film.

Why do people expect perfect acting and perfect editing to tell a good story?

The acting was good enough and the editing was okay, but the story was really good.

It was also great seeing a movie without the gratuitous sex and foul language.

Well worth the time spent to enjoy a good story about good men dealing with a bad situation.

While the 2020 Western movie "The Warrant" certainly wasn't an outstanding or particularly outstanding movie in the Western genre, then it should be said that it was actually watchable enough for what it turned out to be.

It was nice to see the likes of Neal McDonough and Casper Van Dien in this movie, and I must admit that it was also what drew me in to watching this 2020 movie from writer Shea Sizemore and director Brent Christy. Well, also because the movie's synopsis mentioned the American Civil War.

The storyline in "The Warrant" was fairly straight forward, albeit somewhat on the generic and mundane side of the equation though. It was a shame, because the storyline sort of kept the movie back and prevented it from being more than it turned out to be. But that being as it might be, then the movie wasn't boring or anything, it was actually good enough and adequately entertaining, it just wasn't something that stood out from many other similar Westerns.

Neal McDonough was actually rather nicely cast for the role of John Breaker and he fit the character quite nicely, selling his character in a very believable manner with his performance. And Gregory Cruz, playing Bugle, was also a great addition to the movie, and given his performance I feel it was a shame that he didn't have more on screen time, because he added a lot of flavor to the movie. And while Casper Van Dien wasn't a bad choice for the movie, I just didn't enjoy his performance, walking around with a constant scowl, as if having a case of really bad indigestion.

"The Warrant" definitely is watchable, and it had potential to be something greater than what it turned out to be. However, this particular Western just failed to bring anything outstanding to the genre, and as such it ended up being mundane and ultimately a very forgettable movie.

My rating of the 2020 movie "The Warrant" lands on a mediocre five out of ten stars.

I almost passed over this movie because of bad reviews. I found it to be better than expected.

I love Westerns but so many of them in recent years are far too graphic for my tastes & I pass them by..This movie is worth the watch.

This movie is a best test paper to check if your patience is limited or limitless. I've tried to watch it, but after 30 minutes, I gave up. Lot of unnecessary scenes from the very beginning jungle fights, then gradually deteriorated into an even worse situation. Two guys turned sheriffs or marshals, or whatever, but their law keepers' decals looked more like when Nazi tagged their Jew citizens with a big yellow David Star mark of death candidates, it's just looked so weird.

The screenplay just sucked big time, the dialog funny and clueless, the acting, well, contrite to the extreme since the dialog and the scenarios so awkward that forced them to act awkward and unnatural to match the script and the lousy dialog.

I could see that the production team really wanted to make this movie a serious after-civil war Western, but the lousy screenplay simply couldn't make it possible, even with some creditable actors signed up to get involved. This is another reason why the Western genre movies could never be revived after 1970, only a few among the a few barely got some not embarrassed box office. The Western genre movies are officially declared dead and buried in 2020, there's no way and no sense to make even one more.

Not like a regular cowboy and indian movie. I thought it was well played, wished it had been a little longer. (Reason for a 9 instead of 10)

I was waking up, and it's an easy movie to follow with a decent script, historical value because of the Civil War timeframe. I recommend this adventure is one you could add to movie night and be ok with.

The war between the states is almost a decade over. But Casper Van Dien ain't accepting surrenders from nobody. He's got a private war being waged in the Missouri=Kansas border country and also making quite a profit at it as well.

The only ones going after him are Neal McDonough a Missouri sheriff and his son Steven R. McQueen a federal marshal. They all were friends at one time, but that's in the past.

The Warrant is an average western and no doubt will find its market in the red states. I was less than crazy about Van Dien as a villain.

Still his fans who date back to Starship Troopers should enjoy it.

Wasn't a bad movie. Subtitles kept distracting me from the story. Wasn't able to turn them off.

I had to laugh at the acting in this movie. Every actor exaggerated the importance of their lines. Their expressions and every movement were also overly done. This, coupled with the dramatic background music Were just too much.

I couldn't get attached to any of the characters.

Is the movie supposed to be a spoof on westerns?

In Missouri and eastern Kansas, 1869, a sheriff (McDonough) teams-up up with his son, a Federal marshal (Steven R. McQueen), and his AmerIndian associate from the war (Gregory Cruz) to track down a bitter Union comrade who could reignite the war if not stopped (Van Dien). Annabeth Gish is on hand as his wife.

"The Warrant" (2020) is part Western and part Civil War flick. While the main story takes place in 1869, there are myriad sequences from 1864. There's a smidgen of humor amidst the gritty drama and tense action.

A couple of lackluster Trace Adkins Westerns ruined my impression of modern Westerns. I'm talking about "Stagecoach: The Texas Jack Story" and "The Virginian" ("Traded" and "Hickok" were much better, but nothing exceptional). Thankfully, this one and "Old Henry" from the following year changed my mind. They were made on relatively low budgets, but quality writing and acting win the day.

A sequel came out in 2023 called "The Warrant: Breaker's Law," which switches the setting to the far west.

The movie runs 1 hour, 24 minutes, and was shot in toccoa and Alto, Georgia, which are a 95-minutes drive northeast of Atlanta. The classic "The Long Riders" was also shot (primarily) in Georgia, which technically makes both films Easterns.

GRADE: B.

To be big things, i can tell. Needs more: direction, casting, writing. But if your kid is really into westerns, theyll never know the difference.

I hope they had fun doing it, tho.

I like shows like this, predictable or not. Conflicted good and bad guys what's not to love.

No pun intended - maybe it is only me, but is anyone else wondering what would have happened in Starship Troopers if Caspers character would have abandoned his post and left for earth during battle? That would have been something right? Now as with many things in life there is some gray area here ... it is not as easy as one may think it is.

That said, Casper does a great job as villain. The movie still feels quite uneven ... what with the buddy comedy and humor trying to find its place in the dramatic structure of the story. It is a nice and short Western overall with good acting and the costumes/set design is also fine, considering the low budget this probably had. If you are into all that (the movie has to offer) ... you could do worse ... just do not expect too much from it.

Neil Mcdonough is one of my fav actors, and I love a good western. However, acting by everyone terrible, slow movie and very predictable movie. I watched from beginning to end hoping for the best but, what a waist of time! Save yourself don't bother!!! Beautiful woodsie scenery, and horse riding was great!

Neal McDonough is an acclaimed actor. He did himself proud in series Band of Brothers, but in this piece of drivel for a movie, he failed terribly.

This is a horrible movie. Very poor acting, bad camera work, lacks authenticity, story does not flow.

It was painful to watch. Not much above a high school movie project.
