It was heartwarming and touching and uplifting and sad all wrapped up in one, but it was real, just so real and it was honesty. I mean this movie paints a picture of Rob Peace and the picture was the truth. They did nothing to hide who this guy was at all just laid out the cards the way they were delt.
The only thing that may have been off balance was the acting chops of Jay Will. Will as Peace was absolute dynamite! I grew to care for what he was portraying on film as if thought he was my freind! I just want to put on record that's exactly what Oscars are given out for.
Chiwetel Ejiofor just showcased his diversity of talent with this one. Great Actor, i knew that! But great writer and Director!? This is the type of filmmaking i want to see over and over again.
A must see!

Jay Will turns in an engaging enough effort here but I found the whole story just a bit lacking in substance. It's based on a true story, adapted by director Chiwetel Ejiofor who plays the father of the eponymous young lad. He's separated from his mother (Mary J. Blige) but seems to be on decent terms with them as he comes for a routine visit in his dilapidated old car. Quickly, a tragedy strikes and dad "Skeet" finds himself sent to prison for a double murder. It falls to son Rob to try to find a way to prove his innocence. Skip on a few years and we find this young man, highly adept at mathematics, proving his genius as he manages to get into the Ivy League thanks to some sponsorship from his prep school but again, he is constantly striving to find a way to extricate his dad from jail. It's his skills at chemistry that now serve a different purpose as he and a few colleagues develop a brand new revenue stream that makes him very popular amongst the student body (and mind) whilst raising the cash to fund his dad's appeal. Meantime, with their community gradually falling to wrack and ruin, he also hits on the idea of using some of his cash to kick-start refurbishment works on over 170 homes that have been abandoned or foreclosed upon to revitalise his community - but when the sub-prime crash hits the world it leaves him desperately exposed in more ways than one. When we get to the end of this film, it does make you look back and think a little about how society can contrive to thwart people with even the slightest degree of social ambition - even when is appears to be eminently commercially viable, but the problem here is that there's just way too much missing from the narrative. We skip ahead when we ought to be developing his character his situation. There is virtually nothing from the trial that convicted his father, for example. Peace is clearly a decent man of idealism, reduced to using the tools at his disposal to funds things way more permanent than a flashy car or some bling for his girl (Camilla Cabello) but again the storytelling leaves us to make too many assumptions about who did what back when and about his own, ostensibly victimless, crimes that risk compromising his long sought goals. Interestingly, this isn't a film that takes much of a racial stance. His colour seems not to have been especially relevant as his education progressed but in the end it was maybe just a short story that's undercooked here and skirts over too many of the issues it needed to fulfil it's promise. It's still worth a watch, but the telly will suit it fine.

This is most definitely a better movie.than a 6.5 the current reviews are showing. There are some similarities to others shows (e.g., Breaking Bad) but this here is based on a true story. So this is the real story.
Life is a challenge. Sometimes I think about how I could have easily chosen a variety of paths. And how my sister turned out so much differently than me. Or how I could've ended up a story on Dateline for a bad decision or risk or trust I gave to someone. We are all very lucky to be alive, honestly. For that sometimes I even feel bad, because better people, more worthy people than me, didn't make it as far. I think there is a lot of untapped gold in "poor communities". The best investors would know that. Fools.
So, what I'm saying is that this movie is thought provoking. Watch it for yourself and share your thoughts afterwards.
I don't want to mark my review as saying there's a spoiler, so I must hold back. It's worth watching.

"Rob Peace" is a drama that immerses you in his story and takes you to the suburbs of the United States where life isn't easy. This film, directed and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, wasn't well received by audiences upon its release, but the streaming company Netflix decided to give it another chance, and it hasn't disappointed, reaching the Top 10 most-streamed films in several countries.
The film tells the story of Rob Peace, played by Jay Will, and his life in the suburbs of the United States. At a young age, he witnesses the arrest of his father, Skeet Douglas, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, accused of the triple murder of women, to whom he promises to get him out of jail. From then on, the film shows how Rob develops his life as an academic prodigy, so much so that he is the first in his neighborhood to enter Yale University, but he does all this while bearing the weight of his youthful promise. Over time, he relieved this burden by consuming marijuana until he ended up smuggling it to earn the money to help his father.
This is the second film directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, and there's nothing to criticize him for, as there are scenes that touch the viewer's heart, especially with a story as powerful as this one. It's a story based on the book "The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace," which tells the true story of the young prodigy Robert Peace. Actor Jay Will's performance as Robert is exceptional. Besides being a character who wins the viewer's affection, his performance makes it difficult for the viewer to suffer as well, or to love as well, as the viewer empathizes with him.
At the time, it was thought that this film would be a failure due to its low global gross of just USD 422,329. Netflix, as stated in the first paragraph, saw a different spark in this project and decided to purchase the rights to have it on its platform. Against all odds, the film reached the Top 10 most-streamed films in its debut month on Netflix, managing to survive even when no other company had faith in it.
In conclusion, this is a film that indirectly teaches us to always persevere, because if they hadn't continued promoting it, even after its box office failure, Netflix would never have been able to release it. The story is very well done, with excellent photography, and it also teaches us several lessons, including that even the most intelligent and brilliant can make decisions that leave them feeling like a codfish.

I am glad I saw the movie because it tells such an important story and one that is, sadly, all too familiar. I did not know the story or how it ends and I did find myself looking for redemption at the end. The movie however does not fully redeem it self. The last forty minutes are the best part with some dramatic tension you can feel and make no mistake : Jay Hill and Mary J. Blige portray their characters in THEE most authentic way possible, truly the bright spots in the film.
The movie is not very well knit together, it does not flow naturally and does not draw you fully into it like a good movie should. Plainly put, most of the other characters with the exception of an academic advisor( very small role ) and catholic Headmaster mentor are like furniture in the scenes, they may even have some lines but are they in the same movie ? Some great moments of drama in a meandering film which does not make the cut.

Chiwetel Ejiofor's second directorial effort is an intense, real-life drama that manages to be a consistent film, but at times becomes overly pretentious.
With a conventional look by Chiwetel Ejiofor, both in its direction and in its script, we are faced with a film that keeps you totally connected to it, precisely because of the director's cleverness in using all the safe elements that enhance this drama and make it feel intense and moving, capturing a full life of its protagonist that invites us to feel part of a journey destined to give us a hard final blow.
In the acting department, an efficient Jay Will elegantly carries off his powerful lead performance, delivering sincerity in his character loaded with a portrait of a frustrated life and the places that bind it, which is amazingly complemented by a good supporting cast where Chiwetel Ejiofor once again demonstrates what a great actor he is.
I am left with the feeling of being in front of a fairly entertaining film, never too heavy, that invites us to follow Peace's life beyond a life full of complications that offers an authentic portrait of a person destined to fight against the constraints of a place, of moments, of decisions and of a complex life from the beginning.
A conventional, well-made drama, which has its high points and its low points, but which in its final sum ends up leaving the viewer with more sweet than bitter feelings.

Rob Peace's story is strong, intense, challenging, full of challenges and linked to structural racism. The protagonist is a clear star on the rise, the secondary characters have important roles, especially the father who is the great catalyst for Rob's decline and I also have to praise Camila Cabello. She had a small but important participation and was impactful, with her sensitivity and honestly shut my mouth because I was ready to criticize her due to being a pop singer but I'm happy that she showed that she has great potential, despite a weaker script, she managed to stand out in her scenes and made it clear that she has potential in her acting career. Jay and Camila seemed to have great chemistry and I felt like seeing more of them together. It was good to have a small part about how Rob had a romantic relationship to show that there were not only conflicts and he could be happy beyond his family.
Watched this at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
This movie is an example where just because an actor is very talented, doesn't mean they are worthy of directing movies. Chiwetel Ejiofor has directed "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" which I thought was decent but "Rob Peace", despite having good intentions, falls short due to the weak narrative, uninteresting characters and repetitive structure.
The writing explores race conflicts and the system but the writing is cliched and too predictable to fully engage with. Many of the production designs and camerawork were okay but felt cheap. The performances from the cast members were a mix of some good and some pretty bad. Jay Will does a good job with his performance but the rest of the cast, especially Camila Cabello, were pretty bad and were provided with some really rough dialogue.
The direction from Ejiofor feels lifeless and lacking, the pacing is pretty weak, and the tone and atmospheres explored feel as if there was many themes trying to be explored, yet couldn't focus on one. I have read the original novel which the movie is based on and I feel that the movie is a weak adaptation of what made the novel pretty interesting.
Being my last movie from Sundance, it was a bit disappointing. I can see the good intentions here but it was weak.

This movie is slow yet very intriguing. Time story wasn't predictable as it showed someone's triumphs and troubles . The level of intelligence this man had was astounding but yet not so surprising. His story speaks for a community of people who literally succumbed to thier environment. I never heard of the life of Rob Peace and was very disappointed that this story wasn't well known. The casting was spot on and contributed to telling the story . There are many take aways from this story There is a story of the relationship between a black man and his son , the story big achievement in academia, or the will of a young man navigating through life unselfishly !
Giving this an 6/10 rating
Chiwetel Ejiofor takes on writing and directing for the first time in this weak, bland film. The problem is the seen before story of a black person who can be better, then takes the wrong path to disaster. Yet another urban drama doing this tired theme.
At two hours, you get really bored, and just don't care for any of the cast, even the main character, just seen it all before, done better, done worse, too. Chiwetel is the only one who has something of interest to follow, but even he gets n your nerves, and it's a shame, this is based on a true story.
Some years back a film called 'The Hate you Give' did this urban black drama, and that was bad, and better than this, which does not say much for this. Just please stop with these depressing black person I must get out this poor neighbourhood and do better and not. Sick of this crap.
Not missing anything by not seeing this, the acting is fine, that's it.

I am big on writing reviews, especially for POC movies. Primarily because they don't get the love and recognition that they deserve. Maybe it's because those who review it are watching at it with rose colored glasses. I am tired of seeing such low ratings for movie such as these. This movie had a strong sense of what life is like for us POC, and if you can't relate, then maybe you shouldn't review these type of movies. Also, if you grew up in a section of the world, where you never left the four blocks you lived on, then you really shouldn't review these types of movies. The world is a big place, and there's a lot to learn, if you just open your eyes. This movie is a true testament of what life is like for POC and the walls that confine them. Side note; when you write negative reviews, and or give low ratings for POC movies, think of the oppression that you are causing and the silent hand that you have in systemic racism.

It feels like the only thing the movie has in common with the book is its main character and his mother. Rather than doing the work of character development in the film, which would require reconciliation of the fact that Peace was a brilliant man who made choices that put him in high risk situations and ultimately cost him his life, the film spins a fable of a messianic, monogamous victim. There is no meaningful engagement with Peace's life after Yale, his travels (and travails) and the impacts he made on those around him. It's hard to understand how the author's wife produced a film that correlates so little with the book and in the end, feels like it does no real justice to the complexity of the short and tragic life of Robert Peace.
A story of being stranded between two worlds: the thorns that you were born into vs the potential oasis that your hard work offered. This is a brilliantly executed body of work about a young king whose intellect paved a way for him to break generational curses and explore paths that his parents could only dream of. But his dad's incarceration, perceived innocence, and ultimate fight for freedom became the catalyst of a strengthening hurricane of poor choices.
This story, rooted in both truth and power, offers a very realistic think piece about the struggles not only in the black community, but within the black family unit as well. Sometimes when soaring to reach for the stars and trying to remain a loyal support system to those who say they need us, we find our wings very much clipped. And because the Bible says to consider others more than ourselves, we tend to (sometimes) reverse our priorities, and disregard opportunities as to not appear as "brand new," while not realizing that is an inevitable consequence of growth.
I'm so thankful to have witnessed such an intense and necessary story about options and actions. The life that Robert led compelled me to examine my own story and life trajectory. Thank you good sir, and rest in perfect peace!

A great film by Chiwetel that unearths the world of a young soldier, named ROB PEACE in a dreadful and chaotic situation that poor choices expose. This heart wrenching, makes you want to root out all evil designed to kill the innocent reveals the spoils and pain in a-everyday, not so suspecting genius named ROB PEACE. By his own will, gifting and pursuit of his own greatness we are steered through an agonizing story, tainted with poor decisions that ultimately wins his life over by default to a tragic end. This film depicts the social ills and trauma of urban poverty and need for daily survival. What a great (make up) experience to be apart of the moving and telling tale. Watching such talent at the helm to give ve dazzling performances in both Chiwetel, J Will., Mary J Blige and the entire cast was surreal. I truly believe that Rob Peace is no longer villainized but HUMANIZED as a warm and empowering result of this tremendous work.

Not all will get it. But for those that will he did a great job. Often times we think because we change the environment of an individual that everything else does too. This movie does an excellent job showing the day-to-day struggles of black college students thriving in academic fields but also still having to face the hardships of the urban environments they've come from. It was real, relatable, and gritty. It kept my attention through the entire move. Even teared up because of how well the director made the characters feel so real. Coming from a similar environment and going to both UConn and NYU. I almost felt like this was my life.
If this movie is not an Oscar contender, then I don't know what the Academy purpose! Absolutely extraordinary! Moving true story, heartbreaking, inspirational, smart, and let's the world know that you cannot place people in one box and that's all they are. It also shows the strength and love of a family. The actors and direction are phenomenal. Chiwetel Ejiofor has proven his character building in past performances but his directing talents are just as great. He made each character important to the story and the audience care about them. He made no one a hero in this story; they were flawed but you could empathize with what they did and why. I can't say enough about Mary J. Blige! She's a Renaissance woman of the 21st century. A complete entertainer!! This holiday season, take a look at this movie and be moved in your spirit.
7.5 stars.
This is yet another story of a young man who grew up with all the odds against him. In my opinion, if you've seen one film like this, you've seen them all. Although there may never be any movies that quite match 'Twelve Years a Slave', 'The Butler' or 'Roots', I could name a dozen other similar ones. Most contain the same theme, music and the obligatory gaggle of ignorant whites.
What's different about this film is some of the peculiarities in the lead character. Something about the performance made me feel like he really is superior to everyone around him. He is a super hero, akin to Ben Carson in some ways, if you've seen 'Gifted Hands' you'll understand. Other great heroes of the culture are portrayed in 'Driving Miss Daisy', 'The Green Mile', 'The Help', and 'Hidden Figures'.
If you haven't seen all of these I've listed, you absolutely must. Each film features superior humans who come from a profoundly underprivileged background. Most inspiring indeed.

Nowadays, it feels like so many new movies are a waste of time, and I usually avoid anything with an IMDb rating under 7.0. But against my better judgment, I gave this film a chance-and I'm so glad I did.
It's been a long time since I've watched a new movie with storytelling this compelling. Chiwetel Ejiofor masterfully brings the tragic and inspiring story of Rob Peace to life, delivering a roller coaster of emotions that left me on the edge of my seat.
This is the story of a brilliant young man with boundless potential who strived for excellence in pursuit of his dreams. Yet, he was trapped and ultimately confronted by the harsh realities of his circumstances. The way the film captures his journey is both devastating and thought-provoking.
If you're looking for a movie that is as emotional as it is thought-provoking, I highly recommend giving this one a try. It's a rare gem in today's landscape of shallow storytelling.
