I remember "Clown" from over 30 years ago! It took me a long time to track it down and I'm so glad I did. They used to run this short film on PBS in the 70's; I also remembered it vividly. It's very similar to "The Red Balloon". Deeply touching story and great Paris scenery. I highly recommend it; it has a valuable message for children but it is emotional so be prepared to discuss. I watched it with my daughter and 2 nephews and they were MESMERIZED. Also, quite a different lifestyle than children are used to now - very nostalgic for those of us that grew up before the age of hovering parents. Gilou Pelletier is wonderful as the main character, I wish I knew what happened to him!
These foreign children's films were broadcast on the Saturday afternoon kids' show The "CBS Children's Film Festival" with Kukla, Fran, and Ollie (A female actress, Fran, and two puppets, Kukla and Ollie). As a 6 or 7 year old, I remember being emotionally overwhelmed at the bittersweet ending of this short film. Poor copies were at one time available on E-Bay, and I think it has been posted occasionally on Youtube. A very simple story, without one word of dialog, but very emotional soundtrack.
...in deep and complete sense. because it is wonderful trip across Montmartre looking for the best friend. because only a child could do the ways with so persistence. because it is one of short films remembering unique feelings and emotions and states . because it remains a gem. for its admirable simplicity. for its great characters. for the eyes of boy. for the end, so touching for a child, so easy to criticize for an adulte. short, a film who must see. for the moving meet with the childhood. and its special taste.
I used to love to watch the CBS Children's Film Festival Saturday mornings in the 60's & 70's. hosted by Kukla Fran & Olie. They would show films Like "The Little Merry Go Round Horse", "Clown", "The Red Balloon" and many other films. Many films I had forgotten until I come across a bunch in the You Tube web site. I remember these old films then on TV and in school. It would be nice if all of these films could be restored and put on DVD's, so we all can enjoy seeing them once again on our TV's. New generations could enjoy seeing these movies. Good show Gilou Pelletier. For your fine performance in Clown and in The wooden horse movie and the other films you did.
I just got done watching a tear jerker movie with someone and we were remembering movies that made us cry when we were kids. I couldn't believe I remembered the NAME of this movie I saw in 3rd grade. (Clown) I am 40 yrs. old and still can't forget the movie itself!! I remember after the movie was over and before the teacher turned the lights back on, I made a mad dash for the drinking fountain in back of the class room and stood there pretending to get a drink of water for what seemed forever, trying with all my might to pull my self together. That movie still ranks as one of my all time saddest movies... as a kid... I wouldn't cry if I saw it now... I think.
