Heat of the Sun

This movie came under my radar – when in my past time – I was searching for interesting movies from all over the world to watch. This movie won the best regional and lots of tamil movie awards, thus I wanted to see this movie.

Two children - Murgesan (elder brother) and Khatir are living in a small Tamil village. They enjoy the children's playful life. Murgesan is tied and beaten by his father in public because he goes to see a cinema and is caught smoking cigarette. Humiliated, Murgesan steals money and runs away from home. In another town, he starts working at a small cinema hall. He grows up (Pasupathy) and falls in love with Thangam. Thangam's father dis-approves of their love, and Thangam in anger commits suicide. The theatre closes down and Murgesan without love, without job - becomes an alcoholic. That is the time, he returns back to his village after 20 years. Even though he is rejected by his father to enter the house, his brother Khatir (Bharat) brings him back to the house. There are happy times again. But Khatir who is running a small recording studio – is attacked by his rivals. Murgesan takes revenge on the goons and in process dies for the family.

This is a first time directorial debut of Vasantha Balan – who has also written the story. Appreciation to Director Shankar – who has produced this movie, and is giving ample opportunity to really talented young directors to flourish under his banner. And Vasantha justifies all the faith entrusted on him by Shankar.

Very rarely we see a story of two brothers, and this is one that you would love to see and cherish. This is actor Pasupathy's movie all the way. He excels in the role of Murgesan – this is one of the life time award winning role of his. He bring so rich drama and emotions in the movie that it lightens the screen up whenever he is there. Bharat as his brother is decent, along with other star cast – everyone has done a good job.

But the overall credit of the movie should go to Vasantha Balan. Like another director K.Selva Raghavan, this director Vasantha is all set to be in the league of great directors.

Good music by Prakash (nephew of A.R.Rahman) and excellent cinematography by Madhi, Azhagappan – who has captured the real Tamil village and life beautifully. The sets are realistic.

There are many great scenes that would be remembered for many years as the best in Tamil or Indian cinema. Just a cursory mention – one where the child is tied and beaten by father, the love angle between Murgesan and Thamgam, the return of Murgesan to his town, the scene where mother is serving food to Murgesan – all extra-ordinary, brilliantly scripted and executed.

The only thing that I have to say a bit dis-liking of the movie – is its form of violence. It could have had been action instead of violence. The finale could have been Murgesan winning over his father's love instead of sacrificing his life. But this is director's medium and I am sure Vasantha must have enough reasons to make the movie – the way it is.

But I would have loved the movie much more without the gory violence – though commercial, totally unnecessary to the demands of the story and script.

Nevertheless, the movie gets a BIG nod – a great watch – not to be missed.

Painting a failure.

Veyil is a simple story about a young man who was a runaway as a teen returning home as a failure after about 15 years. What makes Veyil worth a watch it comes straight from the director's heart. Pasupathy is brilliant throughout the film as Murugesan and one can easily empathize with his character. Though the Kathir-Thangam (Bharath-Bhavana) episode looks forced into the otherwise smooth flow of the narration it helps to portray the striking difference between the successful Thangam and the fate-ridden Murugesan. The supporting cast is worth a mention, especially G.M. Kumar as the wounded father lives his role. Cinematography and music, with first time composer G.V.Prakash, strike a cord and blend with the narrative. Neat movie making.

Best film of year 2007

Movie with the positive track only can survive in the Tamil film industry till the date this film was released. Only the winner can hold the title of the actor. but in this film Pasupathy leads the role who doesn't succeed in any thing in his whole life. He loses whom he loved, lost his job where he worked from his school age, he was not liked by his father even he returns after long years etc. but his character was greatly affectionate on his family and ready to do anything for his brother. this movie shows there is more emotional feelings to a loser than the winner. this movie will be in best ever movies of Tamil film history. music GV Prakash Kumar has made a good music to this remarkable movie.
