Not a sequel to Nanette, but a consistently funny standup special for those who like Gadsby's style of humour

Nanette was obviously a huge deal when it came out- I remember the hype and a family member eventually convincing me to watch it, but to go in knowing as little as possible. I'm glad I followed that advice, because it was a very surprising stand-up performance; in a good way, of course. The people who criticise it for not being consistently funny are technically right, but it had a whole lot more to offer, and its power came from the fact that it wasn't obviously heading in the direction that it did go in.

Following up one of the best Netflix standup specials (I'd say if not for Bo Burnham's Make Happy and What, Nanette would be the best standup special produced by the platform) wouldn't have been easy, but I really liked Gadsby's approach here. She gets quite meta right off the bat, and the direct delivery makes sense when it becomes apparent quite early on that the show is going to be at least partly about her experiences with autism. It's interesting and eye-opening without being as heavy as the themes touched upon in Nanette.

That last point is both a strength and maybe a weakness, which is acknowledged as much by Gadsby in her opening breakdown of the proceeding routine, stating that she "used up" most of her trauma in Nanette, in a way. As a result, Douglas contains more laughs but probably won't stick with viewers quite as much as her first special.

I'd ultimately say they're both very strong though, just in their own ways. If anything, this proves Gadsby is far from a one-trick pony, and doesn't need to rely on pulling the same genius move she did in Nanette by going from standup comedy to borderline standup tragedy, which would be a whole lot less genius if repeated. The reliance on humour shouldn't suggest that the show is too much weaker though, because Gadsby has a unique and genuinely funny way of talking about things, which really makes her stand out from the crowd of comedians using Netflix as their primary platform.

(It's also cool to see someone from Australia make it big in the standup world, but that's just a person bias on my end due to also being Australian.)

it is stunning!

This comedy special is a true representation of verbal gold. It is funny and representative yet understandable and emphatic. I can truly say that I have never laughed so hard. It was pure joy and I am so happy!

Hannah you cheeky little penguin

Oh I so am in love with this! I saw you on The Project the other night and questioning how you could follow up from Nanette. Well you have done it perfectly - when someone is authentic, honest and open, how could you ever not love them. Thank you for mixing this with such a much needed/appreciated honest voice, with vulnerability and perfect humour. If you didn't have a box, I would say I would want to love you more !!! #preferdonatello ;) I

Good sequencing and great jokes

Straight white men have been making jokes about minorities, the LGBTQ community and women for ages, saying that "oh it's just a joke!" but when a woman dares making (good) jokes about them, apparently all hell breaks loose. Get a grip and take a look at yourselves! She's great at what she does. I liked how this show was built, I found it enjoyable. And no, I don't hate men or Americans. The end of the day: these are just jokes!

Terrific. Storytelling at its best

This was fantastic and so well crafted. Undeniably entertaining and clever. Watch it in its entirety to really get the full effect. Unless you are biased against homosexuality or women or science, or perhaps just logic altogether. If that's the case, you'll probably hate it as much as you hate everything else

Comedian?

If you hate jokes and love TED talks, then this is the show for you. If you enjoy being lectured, this is the show for you. I keep hearing her name so thought I would check out her "show." How is she considered a comedian???

Funny, relatable and clever

I absolutely adore Hannah Gadsby. She's one of the best, if not THE best comedian I have seen. I first discovered her through seeing Nanette on Netflix, and I found the mixture of comedy, lecture and vunerability to be thorougly engaging. I couldn't see how anyone could deliver again on such a high level, but she did!

I think Nanette was so funny in part because I didn't know what to expect. But even knowing her style, this was just as good, if not better. I just want everyone to see it, and agree that it's absolutely genius.

The part about anger was so relatable, and I'm going to start using the expression "puffer fish moment". I love it! I've had many of those without knowing what to call them.

I can't wait to see the next show.

Literal perfection

I loved her last special, so if you didn't like that, chances are you won't like this. But this, to me was perfection. It made me chuckle and roar and it was just everything I needed on this rainy day. Brilliant mix of jokes and joke-types, wasn't bored for a second.

Awful

Boring and tiring.

All she does is complaining and whining.

Although she is right in some issues, her way it's just wrong.

And she is not funny at all.

This is not a stand up comedy.

These are her thoughts, some serious some ridiculus but this is NOT COMEDY.

She's a gift !

What a talent. What a gift for words ! What an insightful person !

I can see why there are numerous negative reviews here on IMDb - her comedy is too intellectual for the "Christian Hatewing Trumpers". It takes brains and knowledge to appreciate her comedy. And knowledge 'that crowd' seriously lacks.

As for myself I am grateful I discovered her in that marvelous series "Please Like Me" and I've been a fan ever since.

Thank you Hannah Gadsby

Bloody brilliant

Some people react like a puffer fish to her humour but that's their problem. The show is brilliant. Funny and insightful.

My only disappointment was the audience I that it was recorder in front of. Maybe her cultural observations at the beginning of the show are actually true. Lighten up America!

Better than Nanette

Nanette was good but it wasn't really stand up comedy. This was. I choked on an almond peel when she started with the antivax material. There were a few bad jokes but I'm fine with that.

Only negative thing was that it was hard to look at the paintings when she was talking about them.

Seems to have caused a lot of offence and upset emotions

This is a brilliant show. A uniquely constructed combination of feminism, art history and autism, with a little sprinkling of anti-vax. Not to be missed!

The low ratings are most likely from hormonal men, so they should just be ignored ;)

(Oh, lighten up love! Can't take a joke?)

Brilliant Gadsby

Gadsby's second special, after the global success of 'Nanette'. The intro of this show is one of the best I've seen in years, where we are presented with the whole structure of the bits, the subjects and the timings, without spoiling the experience until the end. It addresses feminism, misogyny, the best bit about the Renaissance that I remember, ever, and other themes sensitive to the American people, to which Gadsby addresses this special. Hannah Gadsby is one of the best examples that women deserve the place and freedom when it comes to the world of comedy, especially stand-up.

Stunningly bad

Remember when you were younger and use to have to go to church. And you struggled to stay awake while the preacher went on and on about demons and Satan and his evil ways. Well watching Hannah Gadsby up on stage is the same thing. Only her Devil and Demons are White people and Men. Particularly White Men. Her distaste and hatred oozes during this so call comedy special. What it really is a Church for The Snowflake and Woke. Hannah will tell you when you are supposed to laugh because at no point during this, do you want to laugh. Skip this . Not worth your time, unless you worship at the altar of Hannah and trust me, no one does.

she's only funny if you actually have good emotional IQ

I started a healing journey about 6 years ago. In this journey I began realizing how problematic the entertainment I used to enjoy actually was to my mental health (decline). As I began seeing it in myself, I began seeing it in so many others too. The things society laughs at is often bullying and abusive to the extreme and if anyone else tried to be funny in any other way they get labeled boring. When I realized this I felt broken. I stopped laughing at everything I once thought I loved to laugh at and couldn't find anything else to make me laugh again.

Then I stumbled upon "Douglas", by recommendation of others in the actually autistic community since I was also late life diagnosed about 3 years ago. I haven't laughed that hard in so long. People bashing her humor clearly aren't on her emotional IQ (self awareness) level and/or not autistic and/or not LGBTQIA+. You can tell her comedy comes from her autistic/LGBTQIA+ perspective of the world, which is unique. The things I often find funny, most others don't. And the things they find funny, I don't because I find it abusive and cruel. For so long I laughed with everyone else though and it destroyed me inside. I hated that version of me that laughed at things we really shouldn't laugh at.

I can't say much else that others haven't already said that give Hannah positive reviews about this special. All I can tell others about is how her comedy literally saved my life. I've begun allowing myself to laugh at the things I find funny that others don't get, and I've stopped laughing at the abuse and bullying others find funny. My mental health is improving and I really have Hannah to thank for that. I'm not big on praising celebrities, but Hannah deserves praise for all she continues to do in her comedy despite how awful people treat her for being different.
