Eva Mendes signed onto the movie before even seeing the script because she wanted to work with Frank Miller. She said, "I loved Sin City (2005) and 300 (2006), and I love working with creative geniuses. That brain of his, it's like, 'What's going on in there?'"

Shot on greenscreen in fifty days.

In an interview with Total Film Magazine, writer and director Frank Miller admitted that he shouted "Cut!" instead of "Action!" just before filming Paz Vega's scene because he was so distracted by her costume.

Some scenes were shot using a new digital camera called "The Phantom" that can shoot at up to 1,000 frames per second. Most of the film was shot with Panavision Genesis cameras.
