One of Golden Films stronger animations

I say this as someone who generally likes the Golden Films Productions animations, my favourites being Thumbelina, The Little Mermaid and Pinocchio. The Three Musketeers is such a timeless story, and I was expecting something decent while not expecting something completely faithful. Is this Three Musketeers completely faithful adaptation-wise? No, though it is far better as an adaptation than Burbank Films Australia's version. Is it the best version? Again no(the 1973 Richard Lester film), though not the worst. The story is charming and adventurous with the basic feel of the story evident in most scenes, and the dialogue doesn't suffer from being too overly-simplified, in fact it is suitably witty in spots. The music is wonderful, with many classical music favourites like Night on Bare Mountain, Pictures at an Exhibition, Marche Slave and Lohengrin shown and used to good effect, though the best used was the Charpentier Te Deum, the most fitting to the music of the time period and suitably rousing. The characters I had little problem with, Constance is far less annoying than she is in Burbank's version, the villains are suitably antagonistic and the heroes are engaging. Milady doesn't quite have the haunting quality she does in other versions but is enticing nonetheless. I loved the colour and fluidity of the backgrounds also, the character designs are not as fluid but serviceable at least. The voice work is solid. All in all, liked it very much. 9/10 Bethany Cox

The second of two of Golden Films' second line of "animated classics" to be inspired by a novel, Alexandre Dumas's "The Three Musketeers", as opposed to a classic fairy or folk tale; the first one was Pinocchio (1992).

Rochefort: Milady, it is a great pleasure to see you again. Cardinal Richelieu asks that I give you his warm greetings.
Milady: Thank you for your greetings, Monsieur Rochefort, but there's something else you can give me.
Rochefort: First let me see what you have brought for me.
Milady: [Milady pulls out a hidden box containing the queen's diamonds] Ah, in this box lies the means with which Cardinal Richelieu can convice the King that the Queen is not worthy to sit on the throne of France with him.
Rochefort: [laughs softly] Excellent, with the Queen out of the way, the Cardinal will be the only person in France to whom the King can turn for advice.
Milady: Hm, and to no doubt the Cardinal's advice will hasten the day when the king himself loses his crown; and how long will it take after that day before the Cardinal takes the throne for himself?
Rochefort: The Cardinal will remember your part in all of this, Milady.
[Rochefort inspects the contents inside the box and gasps silently]
Rochefort: The Queen's diamonds which the King gave her on their wedding day!
Milady: How foolish of the Queen to have betrayed the King of France by sending the diamonds to the English Duke of Buckingham.
Rochefort: Haha! And how clever of you to steal them from Buckingham. The Queen will feel the executioner's axe once the King realizes she's in love with the Duke of our enemy, England.
Milady: And now Monsieur, I believe there is the matter of my payment.
Rochefort: Payment in full, Milady.
[Rochefort hands the box containing the diamonds to Milady]
Milady: [gasps loudly] You- you mean the diamonds are for me?
Rochefort: With the compliments of Cardinal Richelieu.
Milady: Well, I- I never thought... How can I express my thanks?
Rochefort: By returning to England until the Queen has been executed and taking the diamonds with you so there's not a chance of them being found.
Milady: As you wish, Monsieur Rochefort! I'll sail on the evening tide for England.
Rochefort: Then I bid you farewell, Milady.

Versions alternatives
When the film was originally released by Trimark Pictures on June 1st, 1992, the film opened crediting the American Film Investment Corporation, the production company for the film. In subsequent releases, its successor company Golden Films and new distributor GoodTimes Entertainment were credited instead. For the DVD release in 2003, the "Children's Classics" opening from Jetlag Productions' animated releases was attached to the film.
