According to USA Weekend, Catherine Zeta-Jones worked for one evening as a server at the Fiamma Osteria restaurant in New York City in preparation for her role in the movie. When customers told her and/or remarked on how much their server resembled Catherine Zeta-Jones, she would reply to them (in a faux American accent to hide her distinctive British/Welsh accent), "I hear that all the time."
Aaron Eckhart accidentally sliced off one of his fingernails while filming a scene cutting onions, and didn't notice until Abigail Breslin screamed at the blood.

The Dolcetto wine mentioned in the restaurant during the early part of the film is said to have come from the Adelaide Hills in South Australia. This is the homeland of the film's director Scott Hicks who is also a wine-maker when he is not making films. The wine mentioned is in fact the director's own wine label from his winery Yacca Paddock Vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia.
