Time loop movies can be fascinating as well as frustrating. It’s fascinating because you are taken on a rollercoaster journey, expecting a resolution to the maddeningly complex plot. And, of course, frustrating when there are no concrete answers but interpretations you prefer after re-watches and while sifting through message boards.

Films like Twelve Monkeys (1995), Primer (2004), Timecrimes (2007), Source Code (2011), Looper (2012), Predestination (2014), and Edge of Tomorrow (2014) withhold some thoughtful sci-fi story as they meticulously construct their time-bending maze. But then there are also films like Groundhog Day (1993) or The Final Girls (2015), which don’t emerge from sci-fi territory and use the time loop narrative to satirize specific themes.

Daniela Forever is directed by Nacho Vigalondo, who put out the strikingly original and quite excellent Colossal back in 2018, and also the 2007 genre masterpiece Timecrimes; both movies I adore, infinitely. Logically, every movie is a new thing built from scratch, but with such a unique craftsman like Vigalondo at the helm of it, I had a lot of expectations from Daniela Forever. Maybe that’s the reason I ended up being so underwhelmed after sitting through it. While I wouldn’t necessarily call this a terrible film, this one just doesn’t hit the sweet spot. Vigalondo’s signature directorial style is there, but neither that nor an earnest lead performance by British actor Henry Golding can come to the rescue. What also doesn’t help is the unmistakable resemblance to Inception and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, both much superior, almost perfect movies, in comparison to this. Anyway,...

Oriol Paulo is a name almost synonymous with the modern evolution of Spanish thrillers. Starring Karra Elejalde in a star-making turn as an unassuming middle-aged man who discovers both his resilience and his impotence when trapped in a temporal loop, the film extracts its thematic weight from a strikingly minimal setup: one house, one lab, and barely four characters.

"She's surprising me." "Did she not surprise you when you were together?" Well Go USA has revealed the official trailer for the indie sci-fi romantic thriller film titled Daniela Forever, the next film by acclaimed Spanish filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo. This premiered in the Midnight section at TIFF 2024 last year, then played at the iconic Fantastic Fest, Beyond Fest, Sitges, Trieste, and other festivals. The mesmerizing sci-fi film follows a man as he joins a sleep trial that allows him to rebuild his life with his girlfriend, who recently died in an accident, through the use of lucid dreams. Starring Henry Golding and Beatrice Grannò, along with Aura Garrido, Rubén Ochandiano, and Nathalie Poza. As his lucid dreams bring Daniela back to him, Nicolas becomes obsessed with the fantasy world that he's created and finds that his dreams aren’t as perfect as they seem. Dreams have a lot of power to affect us even after we wake up, and Henry Goldingis about to experience that power on a much greater level. Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024, Daniela Forever features the Crazy Rich Asians star as a heartbroken man named Nicolas, still reeling from the tragic death of his girlfriend, the titular Daniela (Beatrice Grannò). To recover from the shocking loss, he starts undergoing a clinical trial allowing him to control his dreams and, in turn, bring Daniela back... sort of. Collider can exclusively share the official trailer that shows how the lucid dreams bring light back into his life, but it starts becoming a problem as he becomes obsessed with the fantasy just beyond the waking world.

The footage opens with bright and colorful wide-screen shots of Daniela amid happy moments with Nicolas while a cavalcade of voices calls her name.

After spending much of the last decade directing television, Timecrimes director Nacho Vigalando returned to the festival circuit last year with his first feature since 2016’s Colossal. Daniela Forever, which premiered at TIFF, stars Henry Golding, Beatrice Grannò, Aura Garrido, Rubén Ochandiano, and Nathalie Poza in a sci-fi tale about love and loss. It’s now set for a July 11 theatrical release, and the first trailer has landed from Well Go USA.

The sci-fi genre is an incredibly broad one, but despite this fact, it seems that many of its films seem to cover the same topics over and over again. For every unique sci-fi movie, there is another that follows the same tired tropes that can be found throughout the genre. These include first contact films and near-future space mission movies, both of which have seen countless installments over the years.

Although films that fit into these tropes can often be very good, sometimes viewers need a unique movie that either strays from these conventions entirely or puts a fresh spin on them. Many long-running sci-fi TV shows manage to stay fresh by doing this, changing or building upon the parts of the genre in which they find their niche. There are many sci-fi movies set to release in 2025, and with any luck they will also have their own unique formulas as well.

The genre of sci-fi continues to evolve beyond the familiar confines of Hollywood blockbusters, with international and foreign language movies bringing fresh perspectives to the genre. Whether in China or France, many boundary-pushing films challenge traditional sci-fi conventions, offering unique cultural viewpoints and innovative storytelling approaches that transform familiar tropes into something genuinely unexpected, and perhaps brazenly absurd.

Due to its larger budgets, American sci-fi often prioritizes spectacle and cutting-edge visual effects. However, international contributions to the genre frequently take more experimental paths that form, at times, movies that blend sci-fi with horror. This results in films that demonstrate how different cultural perspectives can reshape classic science fiction elements, from time travel to alien encounters, into experiences that feel entirely original. A rich tapestry of global sci-fi emerges that proves the genre's ability to transcend cultural boundaries while maintaining distinct regional identities.

Timecrimes Made With Only Four Main Cast Members...

Director Hannah Macpherson's newest movie is a combination of three genres that don't seem like they'd meld together, but strangely end up working. To wit, Netflix's Time Cut is a horror slasher, a teen comedy and a science-fiction time traveling flick. All three genres blend in one story about sisterhood and an unsolved murder case in the early 2000s.

As director and co-screenwriter, Macpherson was drawn to Time Cut because of the mixing pot of polarizing genres, and her experience growing up in the early 2000s as a "young person trying to figure out who [she] was." While a movie about a girl time-traveling to 2003 sounds extravagant, it's really about two sisters finding an emotional connection that they lack in their own time periods. Science fiction in the movies has long been associated with spectacle and visual effects, going back to Fritz Lang's Metropolis. The advent of CGI has made effects easier to produce than ever, and with the advent of the mega-franchise, sci-fi almost always comes with a healthy sampling of colossal warships, alien vistas, and all the epic grandeur of the cosmos. If you dreamed up a movie defined by empty creative choice after empty creative choice that completely collapses in on itself, it would probably look a lot like “Daniela Forever.”

Some of this is by design as it’s a film that sets out to challenge the foundations of its own premise, which involves a man enrolling in a treatment that allows him to have lucid dreams. When he then uses this to create a fake version of his girlfriend who has recently passed away, it initially plays as a derivative ripoff of the enduring “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” only in reverse. This is only the beginning as it gets much worse from there, becoming like the woeful recent misfire “The Greatest Hits” crossed with a far less imaginative, more insufferable version of “Inception.”

A new sci-fi slasher horror outing from Netflix could make for the perfect viewing this spooky season. The streaming giant has now announced that the horror flick, titled Time Cut, will land on the platform just in time for Halloween on October 30, 2024, with the story mashing together the time travel shenanigans of Back to the Future with the slasher frights of Scream for a terrifying, timey-wimey delight.

Directed by Hannah MacPherson, who is best known for the mystery thriller T@gged and the fantasty drama series School Spirits, MacPherson co-wrote Time Cut alongside the mind behind 2020s body-swap horror flick Freaky and last years Christmas horror comedy outing It's a Wonderful Knife, Michael Kennedy.

The 2024 Fantastic Fest lineup is ushering in spooky season.

IndieWire can announce the full program for the 19th edition of the beloved genre festival. This year, the festival features 28 World Premieres, 23 International and North American Premieres, and 15 U.S. Premieres, including the highly-anticipated releases of “Rosemary’s Baby” prequel “Apartment 7A” and “Terrifier 3.”

Fantastic Fest will take place at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, TX, from September 19 through 26. The festival will open with the world premiere of “The Rule of Jenny Pen,” which stars Geoffrey Rush stars as a judge that encounters a bizarre nursing home resident (John Lithgow) who is hellbent on terrorizing the patients.

The Opening Night gala will include “Terrifier 3” and Lionsgate’s horror psychological thriller “Never Let Go” starring Halle Berry and produced by 21 Laps. The film is directed by Alexandre Aja and is a classic home invasion thriller with a supernatural twist.

The Madrid-set sci-fi romancer has Golding playing Nicolas, a man grieving after the sudden death of his girlfriend (Beatrice Grannò) six months earlier and taking part in a clinical trial for a drug that reunites him with his former lover via lucid dreams, only to leave him obsessed with a fantasy world. As I get older, I find it harder and harder to find horror movies from the 80s and even 90s to qualify for a recommendation towards a best horror movie you never saw. First is the influx of all these great companies like Vinegar Syndrome, Arrow, and Severin Films, not to mention Kino and Scream Factory, who pull out all the stops finding the most hidden of hidden gems to clean up and release. Second, we have a ludicrous amount of streaming services, and the free ones typically can find these smaller movies that cost way less to license a streamable version. Fresh off the selection of “La Mesías” as the only European series at this year’s Sundance Festival, “Veneno” creators Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo – Los Javis – are set to produce Netflix original series “Superestar,” created by Spain’s Nacho Vigalondo, writer-director of 2016’s Anna Hathaway headed “Colossal,” Neon’s first pick-up for the U.S.

The six-episode series is directed by Vigalondo and Claudia Costafreda, co-creator of “Cardo,” an uninhibited portrait of Spain’s young generation eager for a quick fix of sex or drugs for want of a larger sense of direction in life, which was chosen by Variety, as “Veneno,” as one of the best international TV shows of the year.

The story follows a man (Golding) struggling to come to terms with the accidental death of his girlfriend who signs up for a sleep trial that would allow him to reconstruct his life with his girlfriend through lucid dreams.

Leading Spanish distribution and production company A Contracorriente has boarded Whalemen – At the Ends of Earth (Baleazaleak), which is to be directed by veteran Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur.

The project is at an advanced stage of development and will be presented to potential co-producers and international distributors at the San Sebastian Film Festival’s inaugural Creative Investors’ Conference, which runs on September 19 and 20 as part of the Spanish Screenings: Financing & Tech strand.

A Contracorriente has boarded as a co-producer and will distribute the title in Spain.

Mubi has announced its lineup of streaming offerings for next month and amongst the highlights are a Ricky D’Ambrose double bill, including his new film The Cathedral, as well as a trio of films by Maurice Pialat, Gaspar Noé’s Vortex, David Osit’s Mayor, Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, an expansion of their Tilda Swinton series, and more.

Circle of Confusion, the talent management and production company behind “The Walking Dead,” has joined production and finance outfit Carte Blanche and Roadmap Writers’ genre screenwriting competition.

Josh Dove at Circle is handling their side of the partnership alongside Kyle Stroud and Frank Ponce at Carte Blanche and Joey Tuccio and Dorian Connelley at Roadmap Writers.

Carte Blanche will be greenlighting and fully financing at least one genre film. The script will have no more than five characters and five locations, and will focus on a contained, character-driven story. “Timecrimes,” “Buried,” “Monsters,” “Locke,” “Another Earth” and “Oxygen” serve as artistic inspiration.

The competition’s jury consists of producer Liz Cardenas (“7 Days”), Carolina Groppa, who is the executive in charge of production at Issa Rae’s ColorCreative, Giselle Johnson of Sony Pictures’ Screen Gems and Pixar alumnus Colin Levy, who is currently developing sci-fi series “Skywatch” for Peacock. They will decide the top three scripts,...

Exclusive: Kyle Stroud and Frank Ponce of production and finance outfit Carte Blanche, which has credits including Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter, are partnering with Joey Tuccio and Dorian Connelley’s Roadmap Writers to launch a genre screenwriting competition.

Carte Blanche will greenlight and finance at least one feature that comes through the initiative at a budget of sub-1M, though this figure could be increased depending on the elements involved such as cast.

Scripts should have no more than five characters and five locations, and will focus on a contained, character-driven story. Projects including Timecrimes, Buried, and Monsters are all cited as comps, the producers said.

Warner Bros. films “Dune” and “King Richard,” both of which are nominated in several key categories including Best Picture, make their return to streaming on HBO Max. “Dune” returns on March 10, but last-minute viewers looking to catch up before the Oscars will only have a few days to stream “King Richard,” which returns on March 24. The 94th Academy Awards ceremony airs on March 27.
