Christian Campbell who played a prominent role of an openly gay minister's son Peter Webster was already famous worldwide for playing yet another gay character Gabriel on Trick (1999).
The controversial series was canceled after four episodes as a result of pressure from conservative Christian groups who found the story of a pill-popping Episcopal minister and head of a dysfunctional family offensive to the Christian faith and because ratings were low.
Over 20 years before this show was filmed, Aiden Quinn played the lead role in the controversial telefilm "An Early Frost," one of the first movies to address the AIDS crisis; in that film, D.W. Moffett played Quinn's character's romantic partner. For "The Book of Daniel," Moffet played Quinn's character's brother. On the DVD commentary track for An Early Frost, Quinn said that when the producers of "The Book of Daniel" were casting the brother role, they asked Quinn if he knew Moffett. Quinn told them he did, and recommended Moffett for the role, but deliberately omitted the fact that the last time they had worked together, they had played lovers for fear that the producers would then not want to cast them as brothers.
