Scotland Yard psychiatrist Michael Glass (David Morrissey) is appointed the job of analyzing and evaluating crime novelist and suspected serial killer Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone), who is charged with murdering her current boyfriend, football star Kevin Franks (Stan Collymore). Glass diagnoses Catherine as being addicted to risky behaviors but refuses to reveal anything else told to him under patient confidentiality, much to the chagrin of Detective Supt. Roy Washburn (David Thewlis), who is determined to prove Catherine's guilt at whatever cost. As more murders pile up, Glass' therapy sessions with Catherine become complicated when he becomes infatuated with her.

Basic Instinct 2 is a followup to Basic Instinct (1992), which was based on a screenplay by Hungarian-born writer Joe Eszterhas. Basic Instinct 2 was written by American screenwriters Leora Barish and Henry Bean.

Although it helps to know Catherine's history from the first movie, Basic Instinct 2 can easily be watched as a standalone, as it pretty much duplicates the plot of the first movie.

Nick Curran (Michael Douglas) is mentioned in passing. Catherine tells Michael that she once knew a homicide cop in San Francisco named Nick Curran aka Shooter. She says that she and he used to ride around in his car, listening for 9-1-1 calls on his scanner. If an interesting one came across, they would speed over, hang around for a while, and then go have sex in Nick's car. No mention is made of his current whereabouts or ultimate fate.

The film had to be cut to achieve the R rating for its theatrical release. However, the unrated version of the film, which was released on DVD later, doesn't come up with much material that one would consider being cut out to secure the rating.
