Ruminov's debut proved that Russian movie has chance to become something more than pure pyrotechnic effects of 'neo-Russian blockbusters'. High-grade drama of the script – you cannot tear yourself off the screen to go out to the lady's room; the funniest and keen satire on contemporary Russia – you cannot put a smile out of your face when you see a film producer cracking pencils like nuts. And the ending you can never expect is a brilliant metaphor that puts every absurd detail of the action on its proper place. Festival juries and critics were absolutely right to call Deadline the most promising debut. I read the movie cost US$27,000, and I think this money was spent in the most adequate way in our film business for the last 10 years.
