The Sopranos is one of the greatest television shows ever. But one series starring Wendell Pierce as the iconic Detective Bunk Moreland, The Wire, is not far behind, and in fact ranks higher than the mob drama on Rotten Tomatoes. Set in Baltimore, this HBO drama also hides a surprising cameo that many may have forgotten.
In episode seven of the fifth season of The Wire, Law & Order star Richard Belzer made a blink-and-you’ll miss-it appearance as John Munch, a character he has reprised across several crossover episodes across the world of crime drama television. This surprising cameo not only broadened the actor’s appeal but also connected The Wire to the broader television universe.

The "Law & Order" episode "The Violence of Summer" came way back during the show's very first season, long before the series became a TV institution. The franchise wasn't yet the new high-water mark for crime procedurals, and years before any of the show's hit spinoffs and a dud spinoffs. "Law & Order," we now know, is something of a rite of passage for aspiring actors, as many untested professionals got their start on the show. /Film has even written an article about the famous people who got their starts on "Law & Order" when they were teens or even kids.
As such, it's exciting to look back on "The Violence of Summer" and see Samuel L. Jackson and Philip Seymour Hoffman, prior to their respective worldwide fame, playing supporting roles. In 1991, Jackson already had numerous credits, having appeared in the 1981 film "Ragtime," and the hits "Coming to America" and "School Daze,...

The joke remains true: if you check into a motel anywhere in America, you can turn on the television and, in no more than three clicks, find a channel that is live-broadcasting an episode of "Law & Order."
More than any other TV show, Dick Wolf's "Law & Order" is an institution, providing more episodes of scripted, primetime TV than any other series to date. It pales in comparison to most daily American soap operas, and falls well behind the Indian farm report "Krishi Darshan," as well as the long-long-running German children's show "Unser Sandmännchen," but "Law & Order" is certainly up there, having produced about 1,383 episodes over 67 seasons of TV.
As of this writing, the extant "Law & Order" shows were released in the following order:
"Law & Order" "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (1999 - present) "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" (2001 - 2011) "Law & Order: Trial By Jury...

Dick Wolf's "Law & Order" franchise long ago reached "empire" status. The original murder mystery series debuted in 1990, and ran strong for twenty straight seasons, finally drawing to a close in 2010. Not satisfied with 20 years, Wolf resurrected the series in 2022, and it's been running steadily ever since. The show's first spin-off, 1999's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," which centered on cases of sexual assault, proved to be even more popular than the original, running for (as of this writing) 26 seasons. From 2001 to 2011, the two big hits were joined by the more psychologically complex "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," a series that told audiences whodunnit from the start, and it, too, was a notable success. Most recently, the L&o franchise was joined by four successful seasons of "Law & Order: Organized Crime."

Big-shot producer Dick Wolf is the mastermind behind the Law and Order franchise. He created this crime series back in 1990, and it has subsequently become one of the most successful procedurals of all time. Now, there are multiple Law & Order series running, including the mothership series, which was revived in 2022, Law & Order: Svu, and Law & Order: Organized Crime. The series has also had multiple spinoffs that have since concluded, including Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order: Trial by Jury, and Law & Order: LA.
Though his name is most synonymous with the Law & Order IP, Wolf has also been involved in other major television shows. This has included the One Chicago series, as well as FBI and its spinoffs FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International. Ever since the original Law & Order debuted in 1990, there has been at least one show carrying the Law & Order name on the air, creating one of the most popular and long-lasting television franchises of all time. The original series was a riveting crime procedural that followed the case-of-the-week format with most shows broken into two sections -- the first half detailing the police investigation and arrest of the prime suspect and the second half focusing on the prosecutors taking the case to trial.
The simple formula worked for audiences, with them returning year after year, even with the rotating cast throughout its historic run. The rest of the franchise played around with the formula, taking the action to new locations, focusing on specific aspects of the police or legal departments, and crossing over with one another. While some spinoffs fell short of the original, others surpassed it, making...

A few fictional television characters will be remembered forever, and John Munch counts among them. Played by Richard Belzer and based on Jay Landsman (a central figure in David Simon's 1991 true crime novel Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets), the character first appeared in the procedural Homicide: Life on the Street, where his kindness and belief in conspiracy theories made him stand out from his gruff, tough-as-nails colleagues. When the show was canceled, Munch was quickly saved from the sinking ship and thrown into the robust lifeboat that was Law & Order: Svu. After all, he was too valuable to drown with the rest.
Figuratively, Munch never just stuck to his jurisdiction. The lawman appeared in various shows across different networks, suggesting that these productions all existed in the same universe. These include The X-Files, Arrested Development, The Wire, The Beat, American Dad, and 30 Rock. Munch...

The Season 23 finale of “Law & Order” left the fate of Tony Goldwyn’s D.A. Nicholas Baxter up in the air on election night, but showrunner Rick Eid told TheWrap ahead of the Oct. 3 premiere that the character has indeed won and will be back for the entire season.
He also promised that Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) will be “a big part” of the second episode, about the murder of a tech CEO. “[Benson] has a pre-existing relationship with the defendant in this case,” said Eid. “It’s really a big part of the episode. It felt organic to who Mariska’s character is, and it was an interesting element to the story that gave it another layer.”
Eid said the crossover, which also sees the return of Elizabeth Marvel’s character Defense Attorney Rita Calhoun, is more “organic” than some of the previous three-series premieres that included “Law & Order: Organized Crime.

Detective Lennie Briscoe was the longest-running lead detective in Law & Order history, appearing in multiple spin-offs. Briscoe's character arc included serving in the Armed Forces, joining the NYPD, and becoming a senior detective in the 27th Precinct. Jerry Orbach's portrayal of Briscoe was highly respected by real NYPD officers, who saw him as the epitome of a veteran NYC detective.

The Intelligence Unit has certainly evolved over the past decade.
Since Chicago Pd Season 1, we've had our fair share of characters come and go, losing beloved characters in any myriad of ways.
As we head into Chicago Pd Season 12, we can expect more changes regarding the Intelligence Unit as it continues to take new forms.
Chicago Pd Cast Slowly Evolves
For the most part, the fortunate aspect of Chicago Pd is that many of the original cast members still remain, even as we head into the twelfth season.
Of course, cast shifts due to budget restrictions have become common in many series, particularly those across the One Chicago franchise.

Looking at the crop of new scripted series selected by the broadcast networks for 2024-25, one cannot help but reminisce about the 20th anniversary of what may have been broadcast television’s greatest season ever.
The 2004-05 season introduced several genre-defying series — all but one based on original ideas — whose impact on TV storytelling is still being felt: Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, House, The Office and Veronica Mars. Remarkably, one of them, Grey’s Anatomy is still around, having just been renewed by ABC for Season 21, along with another show that premiered that same season, animated comedy American Dad!.
Aside from the fact that the current economic realities of the TV business will likely never support another drama going to 21 seasons, broadcast networks will also likely never take chances on so many unconventional ideas: a sci-fi drama on a deserted island that set the tone for modern genre fare, a...

However, her journey to success wasn't without its challenges, as Chastain faced difficulties with being cast due to her unconventional appearance as a redhead. However, her role in Oscar Wilde's tragedy Salome, alongside Al Pacino, garnered attention and opened doors to casting directors. Spin-offs can struggle to live up to the success of the original show, as seen with "Joey" and "Joanie Loves Chachi," which failed to capture the chemistry and appeal of their predecessors. Changing the formula and dynamics of a successful show in a spin-off can lead to its downfall, as demonstrated by "Law & Order: Trial By Jury" and "The Cleveland Show," which were canceled after just one season. Sometimes, a spin-off loses the magic and charm of the original, resulting in poor viewing numbers and cancellation, as seen with "Saved by the Bell: The College Years" and "How I Met Your Father."

Thursday’s episode of Paramount+’s “Frasier” revival saw the return of Dr. Lilith Sternin – the ex-wife of Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) and mother of Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott) – as the two parents compete for their son’s affection during his birthday.
Showrunner Joe Cristalli (“Life In Pieces”) told TheWrap that “nothing was more enjoyable as a fan to watch” than seeing Grammer and Neuwirth’s characters go toe-to-toe zinging each other again.
“There’s a version of this show where ‘Oh, Lilith and Frasier are a little softer now, they found a nice balance and they’re starting to come around’ and no, that’s not the case,” Cristalli told TheWrap. “They’re still going at each other hard and it’s so fun to write for that. It’s so fun for such a specific voice to come up with these insults and jokes that nobody else can perform except for Kelsey and Bebe.

The sequel, announced for a greenlight back in October, sees Frasier set off to a different city with new challenges to face, new relationships to forge, and an old dream or two to finally fulfill. Frasier has re-entered the building!

Richard Belzer played the character of Detective John Munch for nearly 30 years, popping up as Munch in various TV shows that span across genres. Belzer felt like an actor who would just be around forever, which made his recent death at the age of 78 all the more melancholy. But while Belzer may be gone, his legacy lives on. And now, USA Network will pay tribute to the late actor by airing a "Munch-a-thon" that will feature 10 of Belzer's best episodes from "Law & Order: Svu." I confess I haven't watched any form of "Law & Order" in years, but Munch was always one of my favorite characters, so I might have to tune in and check this out.

Comedian and actor Richard Belzer, who sadly died on Sunday at age 78, played detective John Munch on several series, including “Homicide: Life on the Street” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” And on every single one of them, he had something wise and witty to say.
The character of John Munch was created on the underrated ’90s police drama “Homicide: Life on the Street.” Munch was known for his one-liners, metaphysical riffs and sprawling conspiracy theories while solving murders in Baltimore alongside detectives played by Andre Braugher, Daniel Baldwin and Ned Beatty. As he mused in one episode: “If a murder is committed in Baltimore and no homicide detective takes the call, did that homicide actually occur?”
He got a bit blue when the character moved over to “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” in 1999, where the topics were rape, assault and, sometimes, sexual dysfunction, but he was still the same Munch.

The world recently lost a talented comedian, a gifted actor, and an all-around incredible human being when Richard Belzer passed away at the age of 78. Belzer was a former audience warm-up comedian for "Saturday Night Live," and his knack for bringing the funnies helped make his most memorable character, Bpd Detective, NYPD Detective/Sergeant, and Da Investigator John Munch, everyone's favorite fictional member of law enforcement. The television empire of cop dramas from executive producer Dick Wolf has made household names of characters like Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson, Christopher Meloni's Elliot Stabler, and Ice-t's Odafin Tutuola -- but Belzer's John Munch is in a class all his own.

Richard Belzer, original cast member of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” has died at the age of 78, according to media reports. The cause of death is currently unknown.
“Richard Belzer was the first actor to welcome me when I started at ‘Svu,'” current “Svu” showrunner Warren Leight wrote. “Open, warm, acerbic, whip smart, surprisingly kind. I loved writing for Munch, and I loved being with Belz.”
Belzer was best known to fans of the long-running crime drama as NYPD Det. John Munch, a sardonic investigator whose dry wit was guided by the actor’s years of stand-up comedy experience. While Belzer was best known for playing Munch on “Law & Order: Svu” from 1999 to 2013, he had previously played the character for seven seasons on the NBC drama “Homicide: Life on the Street,” during which Munch was a homicide detective that served as a mentor to his younger partner Det.

The original “Law & Order” will return to NBC with new episodes for Season 21, nearly a dozen years after the series signed off after a 20-year run.
Rick Eid will serve as showrunner of the new iteration of the series from Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television. “Law & Order” creator Dick Wolf has worked for years to get the mothership series back with new episodes in primetime.
“There are very few things in life that are literally dreams come true,” said Wolf. “This is mine.”
There’s no word yet from NBC on casting or a premiere date. The original series had a revolving ensemble over the years that helped keep the show energized as actors would naturally move in and out of roles in law enforcement and criminal justice.
“Law & Order” has spawned more than a dozen spinoffs that have generated billions of dollars in licensing revenue for NBCUniversal around the world.

In quintessential Logan Roy fashion, the HBO series “Succession” absolutely dominated Emmy nominations in terms of acting recognition. After an across-the-board snub by the acting branch last year, the Roy family came roaring back with an impressive nine acting bids, over-performing our own high expectations. In addition to the blindside of Cousin Greg (Nicholas Braun) sneaking into the competitive Supporting Actor category, “Succession” also picked up an unexpected nomination for Harriet Walter, who only 222 of our users correctly predicted––this author included.
Though Walter’s nomination indicates just how much the acting branch loved and paid close attention to the second season of the series, her surprise appearance in the category could potentially stymie a “Succession” victory in the Guest Actress category, where two-time Emmy-winner Cherry Jones also competes for her “Succession” turn as media mogul Nan Pierce. Might the surprise, second nomination in this category actually cost “Succession” some Emmy gold?...

There was a lot of talk about how handsome Bradley Cooper is on Thursday night at the Beverly Hilton, where the director and star of “A Star Is Born” became the 32nd recipient of the American Cinematheque Award at a black-tie fundraising dinner and ceremony.
And there was a lot of talk about how hard-working he is and how talented he is, lots of the kind of plaudits that are the currency of the realm at Hollywood awards shows.
But something felt different about the tribute to Cooper. “Most of us have been to nights like this many times before,” actor Sean Penn said when he presented the award to Cooper after a couple of hours of speeches and film clips. “But we’ve never been at one where so many generous and moving things have been said with such extemporaneous spirit.”

There’s another change at the top of the new CBS series “FBI.”
The freshman drama, which is executive produced by Dick Wolf, is changing showrunners for the second time. Greg Plageman is stepping down and Rick Eid and Derek Haas are stepping in to split showrunning duties on the show. Plageman himself took over as showrunner in July following the exit of original showrunner and series co-creator Craig Turk. Both men are frequent collaborators with Wolf. In addition to “Chicago Fire,” Haas has worked on all of the other “Chicago” shows, including the one-season “Chicago Justice.

HBO's hit TV series The Deuce examines the lives of sex workers in New York City amid porn's controversial rise to popularity in the 1970s. We've been anxiously awaiting season two's debut, and now that it's finally here, we can again dive deep into the show's heated plot points and enjoy the firecracker cast. With a new look on the show, one cast member in particular has been catching our attention.
Abby Parker stepped on the scene in season one as a trailblazing, vivacious college student who becomes Vincent Martino's (Franco) latest romantic interest. In the second season, we've jumped ahead to when Parker is about 26 years old. We think Margarita Levieva plays the character perfectly, so we couldn't help but wonder where else this actress has left her mark.

Court TV going to 'Trial'
Court TV has snapped up rights to all 13 episodes of NBC's short-lived series Law & Order: Trial by Jury from NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution. The deal for the most recent series in Dick Wolf's franchise includes one never-before-seen episode of the courtroom drama, which stars Bebe Neuwirth and Fred Dalton Thompson. "Given our viewers' interest in dramatic stories of life in the courthouse, we believe this 'Law & Order' series will work particularly well on Court TV," chairman and CEO Henry Schleiff said. L.A. Screenings entice Canada
TORONTO -- Canadian broadcasters coming to the Los Angeles Screenings will need to lay down big bets during the coming week if they want to catch CTV, the current primetime ratings leader here. CTV enjoyed a stellar 2004-05 season, walking away with 18 of the top 20 primetime shows on Canadian TV, virtually all American shows. "We want to maintain our position," Susanne Boyce, CTV president of programming, said midway through the upfronts. CTV has a few holes to fill after shows like Joan of Arcadia, 8 Simple Rules and Law & Order: Trial by Jury were canceled, but Boyce promises no major programming shifts this fall. The main task for rival CanWest Mediaworks, which late last year brought in a trio of Americans led by former Bravo Networks president Kathleen Dore to replace top programr Doug Hoover and head of sales Jack Tomik, will be making up for the loss of such hit series as Friends, Frasier and now Everybody Loves Raymond.

Net pre-upfront activity peaks
In a flurry of pre-upfront activity Thursday, top brass at the broadcast networks and major studios were busy determining the fate of new and returning shows, lining up showrunners and swapping information about prospective scheduling moves to be unveiled at next week's fall schedule presentations in New York. Among the bigger surprises, sources said NBC was not expected to renew Law & Order: Trial by Jury, which has had an uphill climb ratingswise on Friday night since its midseason debut this year. Reps at NBC, like the other networks, declined comment on any rumors regarding pickups or cancellations. NBC kicks off the schedule unveilings Monday with its presentation at Radio City Music Hall. Among the peacock's new series pickups are expected to be Warner Bros. TV's E-Ring, the Pentagon-themed drama from Jerry Bruckheimer TV; NBC Universal TV Studio's Fathom, about a mysterious deep-sea creature; and Touchstone TV's Inconceivable, set at a fertility clinic. Book of Daniel, a drama about an unconventional priest, had been a hot prospect to land on the fall schedule but is said to have cooled off considerably during the past few days.
