Edgar Wright’s (Shaun of the Dead, Last Night in Soho) new movie The Running Man, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel, had been dated for theatrical release on November 7, the very same day that the Predator returns to the big screen in Predator: Badlands. As you might have guessed, one of them was going to have to move. And it’s not the Predator.
The Running Man will now release in theaters on November 14, 2025.

Park Chan-wook’s next directorial effort, No Other Choice, which will compete at the Venice Film Festival, is a remake of the 2005 French thriller The Ax, which itself was an adaptation of the novel by Donald E. Westlake. Directed by renowned filmmaker Costa-Gavras, the movie follows a man’s spiral into desperation after being laid off from a paper mill, leading him to eliminate his job competition, literally.
As for Chan-wook’s movie, considering he’s known for his knack for blending stylized violence with moral ambiguity, the premise seems right up his alley. And the French auteur has high hopes for Chan-wook’s remake, in which he’s serving as a producer.

Park Chan-wook is among the deans of Korean cinema, famous for writing and directing “Oldboy,” among other films, and producing “Snowpiercer.” He also has a new film premiering later this month at Venice, “No Other Choice.”
So when it was announced Friday that Park and his writing partner, Don McKellar, had been expelled from the Writers Guild of America, it naturally raised a question about what it would mean for his career.
The answer is: Almost nothing.
“It has absolutely no impact on employability,” said Adam Levin, a partner at Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp. “Neither the union nor the producers can discriminate against you based on your non-union status.”
Park can still write, produce and direct movies and TV shows, either overseas or in the U.S. Companies that are signatories to the WGA contract are free to hire him in whatever capacity they want, or to buy his finished films.

After spending July discussing slasher film The Slumber Party Massacre (listen), supernatural giallo film Phenomena (listen), and entry #2 in Park Chan-wook revenge trilogy Oldboy (listen), we kicked off August with a look at director Robert Lee King‘s Psycho Beach Party (2000).
In the homage to beach and surf films of the ’50s and ’60s, Lauren Ambrose plays Florence (aka “Chicklet”) a girl who wants to hang out with the surfer boys, but constantly finds herself swapping personalities due to a hypnotic suggestion.
Meanwhile, Captain Monica Stark (Charles Busch in drag) is investigating a string of murders targeting Florence’s friend group and anyone deemed “imperfect.” This includes queer-coded boys Yo-Yo (Nick Cornish) and Provoloney (Andrew Levitas), failed psych major Star Cat (Nicholas Brendon), and best friend Berdine (Danni Wheeler).

The Sympathizer, starring Hoa Xuande and Robert Downey Jr., arrived on HBO with all the makings of a prestige drama worth talking about. Audiences and critics were drawn in by its mix of espionage, identity, and sharp satire, and that’s hardly surprising when you see who’s behind the camera.
Park Chan-wook, the visionary director who gave the world Oldboy, co-created this seven-part miniseries alongside Don McKellar. It’s adapted from Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, so there’s literary heft behind all the visual flair. Chan-wook and McKellar recently made headlines for being expelled from the WGA for writing on the show during the writers’ strike.

The Handmaiden is Park Chan-wook’s highest-rated movie after Oldboy on Prime Video. This movie is also backed by critics and currently sits at a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and holds an 85 Metascore. It’s based on the work of Sarah Waters’ Fingersmith, and stars actresses Kim Tae-ri and Kim Min-hee. The movie follows Lady Hideko and Sook-hee, and the storyline is based on love, betrayal, and revenge.
While this one is definitely a must-watch, it is not without its fair share of controversies. Its explicit s*x scenes and graphic violence divided the audience. There was a huge debate on whether the lesbian s*x scenes were empowering or just catering to the male gaze.
The director himself addressed these criticisms in an interview with AfterEllen and said:
When it’s presented to me as an issue of a male gaze, I cannot deny that I myself am male.

The 2023 SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes completely shook Hollywood for months, but The Sympathizer's creators are still facing the consequences. The strike began on May 2, 2023, when the Writers Guild of America ordered its members to pause work on all productions, bringing the industry to a halt. They were eventually joined by SAG-AFTRA on July 14.
The WGA strike, in particular, focused on a number of issues, including larger writers' rooms, a demand for increased pay, and concerns about AI replacing writers. The strike ended on September 27, 2023, and the WGA signed a new collective bargaining agreement in October, as many of its demands were addressed.
Years after the strike ended, however, the WGA announced that The Sympathizer's writers have been ejected from the Guild. Don McKellar (No Other Choice) and Oldboy director Park Chan-wook allegedly continued to work on the show during the strike. According to Deadline, both have been permanently expelled from the WGA,...

In a surprisingly public move, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) has expelled two prominent creators: South Korean writer and director Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar, a Canadian writer-director who worked with Park on the HBO limited series The Sympathizer. According to a report via Variety, the decision was made public after the WGA discovered that both Park and McKellar had continued to write and work on the series while the 2023 strike was ongoing, which directly contradicted the Guild's rules. The WGA strike was one of the longest in the Union's history, lasting from May to September 2023.
Many projects were delayed or halted altogether during the WGA 2023 strike, although some were allowed to continue with certain pre-existing conditions being met. The Sympathizer wasn't a production that met such requirements, making Park's and McKeller's contributions something that has led to their memberships being revoked. For most films, the title card will say the director's name and then "film," so, for example, "A Steven Spielberg Film" or "A Film By Quentin Tarantino." However, Spike Lee is one of those directors who is always pushing the boundaries of creativity. He is known for his provocative narratives that investigate racial themes, feature deeply complex characters, boast galvanizing hip-hop soundtracks, and kinetic visuals — like his signature double dolly shot where characters appear to float through scenes. The Atlantic describes his films as "unabashedly bold and combative." The majority of Spike Lee's films have the credit, "A Spike Lee Joint."
Why would Spike Lee call his movies a "joint" instead of a film? Let's look at the several meanings of the word. One of the first definitions is a place of entertainment where people gather. This is fitting for Spike Lee's narratives about New York City life, where neighbors come together at casual,...

Legendary Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook and his co-creator on the HBO Max series The Sympathizer have been expelled from the Hollywood writers’ union after allegedly working during the strike.
The director of Oldboy and The Handmaiden was booted from the Writers Guild of America alongside Don McKellar after working on the 2024 series during the work stoppage, the union told members Friday.
Adapted from the eponymous Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen, the series from A24 and Rhombus Media follows a North Vietnamese double agent (played by Hoa Xuande) who continues passing along information after moving to Southern California before the fall of Saigon. Robert Downey Jr. was critically praised for playing multiple roles in the series.
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to HBO and representatives for Park and McKellar for comment.
Park is the most high-profile figure yet to be identified by the union as a rule-breaker during its 148-day strike.

In unfortunate news, renowned South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook has been expelled from the Writers Guild of America. Why? Well, the reason behind Park’s expulsion is that he was working on his HBO miniseries, The Sympathizer, during the WGA strike, which took place in 2023 (via Variety).
Not only Park, but co-creator Don McKellar has also been fired from the WGA for the same reason: for writing on Robert Downey Jr‘s miniseries during the strike.
For those who don’t know, the Writers Guild of America, which represents 11,500 screenwriters, went on strike from May 2, 2023, to September 23, 2023. This was due to a dispute with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
The writers demanded significant changes to their compensation and working conditions. They also wanted to strictly limit the use of artificial intelligence when it came to writing scripts since this could seriously harm their livelihoods. Eventually, on October 9, 2023, a new contract was signed.

WGA Toss Out Park Chan-wook & Don McKellar For Writing On HBO’s ‘The Sympathizer’ During 2023 Strike
The Robert Downey Jr. produced and starring The Sympathizer came and went last year with a lot less fanfare than many expected due to the talent involved and the fact the miniseries was based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the same name. However, some unexpected fallout from the Emmy-nominated Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar created and written high-profile project emerged today from the Writers Guild of America West, and it really ain’t pretty.
The acclaimed Oldboy director and the multiple Genie Award winner have both been expelled from the WGA West.

Actor and comedian Jim Carrey was almost the live-action version of the iconic anime hero Lupin the Third, according to a new post by Hellboy screenwriter Peter Briggs. Though the Lupin franchise has been helmed by visionaries like Hayao Miyazaki, a Western live-action adaptation could have launched Monkey Punch's Lupin the Third into the global spotlight.
In a post on Bluesky, Peter Briggs talked about writing a script for a live-action version of Lupin the Third that was set to star Jim Carrey, presumably as the titular lead. Unfortunately, the rights were lost before the movie could be made, depriving fans of a live-action adaptation that could have been something special.
I was doing a movie with Tsui Hark, back in 1997. A live action adaption of "Lupin III", that we would have done with Jim Carrey. Alex Ho ended up losing the rights, so it never happened. Craziest screenplay I ever wrote!

Well, because we’ve got a whole buffet of mind-bending, pulse-racing, jaw-dropping Korean thrillers out there that aren’t those two. And yes, they’re just as clever, wild, and criminally underrated.
You know what? Think of this as your VIP pass to the shadowy corners of Korean cinema, the literal stuff that hasn’t even flooded your timeline. From gritty murder mysteries to psychological rollercoasters and twisty revenge tales that leave you questioning humanity, these movies bring the actual heat. While some are stylish slow burns, others will completely punch you in the face within the first ten minutes.
So, if you’re the type who loves getting blindsided by plot twists, or just bored of Hollywood thrillers that think “gritty” means dim lighting and sad detectives,...

Busan — The 30th Busan International Film Festival has chosen Park Chan-wook’s “No Other Choice” as its opening film, scheduling the world premiere for the September 17-26 showcase in the southern port city. Festival organisers said the pick embodies “what audiences most hope to see” and can “invigorate Korean cinema” as the event marks its milestone year.
The 139-minute thriller adapts Donald Westlake’s novel The Ax and tracks Man-su, a middle-aged worker whose desperate hunt for a new job grows lethal after he is sacked from a paper company. Lee Byung-hun headlines opposite Son Ye-jin, joined by Park Hee-soon, Lee Sung-min and Yeom Hye-ran.
Lee will also become the festival’s first male solo host when he emcees the opening ceremony at Busan Cinema Center. Festival director Jung Han-seok called unveiling Park’s first feature since Decision to Leave “deeply moving” for an edition that underlines Busan’s growing international reach.

We kicked off the summer with a look at Steven Spielberg’s classic creature feature Jaws (listen) before checking out our first Jean Rollin lesbian “vampire” movie Fascination (listen), as well as the female dominated slasher The Slumber Party Massacre (listen). Now it’s time to revisit Dario Argento (for only the second time on the pod!) with a first time look at 1985’s Phenomena.
The film stars Jennifer Connelly as Jennifer Corvino, an American girl sent to a Swiss boarding school. The girl has a mysterious ability: she can communicate with insects and even get them to do her bidding. This proves to be a wildly helpful skill when Jennifer finds herself targeted by a killer who preys on young women, including her roommate Sophie.
But who is committing the murders and why? Could it be the disabled local entomologist, Professor John McGregor (Donald Pleasence) or his chimp, Inga?...

Park Chan-wook marked his ‘true’ directorial debut with 2000’s Joint Security Area, which stands at an 88% rating on the Tomatometer. While the movie tends to get overlooked in discussions surrounding Chan-wook’s filmography, often dominated by his other notable works, especially Oldboy, on Rotten Tomatoes, his ’00 feature stands ahead of Oldboy‘s 82%.
Considering how Jsa rarely gets mentioned alongside Chan-wook’s other internationally recognized titles that helped globalize Korean cinema as a whole, the movie definitely deserves more recognition internationally.
Park Chan-Wook’s Joint Security Area Ranks Higher Than Oldboy on Rotten Tomatoes
Joint Security Area follows the mystery surrounding the death of two North Korean soldiers at the Korean Demilitarized Zone, which ends up prompting an investigation. In the wake of the incident, Lee Young-ae’s Major Sophie E. Jean, a neutral officer, is tasked to get to the bottom of it, leading to the unravelling of the forbidden friendship across the two borders.

Following the release of Decision to Leave in 2022, Park Chan-wook turned to television, working on an adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen's novel The Sympathizer for HBO in 2024. Now, after three years, the acclaimed South Korean director is returning to feature films for his latest project: No Other Choice. The first trailer for the black comedy has been released, and the movie appears to be an enthralling thriller reminiscent of Parasite's social commentary, with the signature eccentric humor and wit that audiences have come to expect from Park productions. There seem to be some grisly murders at the heart of this thriller, and the Oldboy director has assembled a talented cast to bring his story to life.
The 51-second teaser (which can be viewed below) keeps most of the plot under wraps, though there is plenty to leave viewers intrigued. Park Chan-wook brings his eye for style in the...

Lee Byung-hun might be tempted by violence after getting the axe in the new teaser for Park Chan-Wook’s pitch-black thriller No Other Choice.
Neon will release the film in theaters this fall after its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
No Other Choice is an adaptation of Donald E. Westlake’s mystery thriller The Ax and follows “a man who is abruptly laid off by the paper company where he worked tirelessly for many years. He grows increasingly desperate in his hunt for new work, eventually coming to a life-altering decision.”
The novel’s synopsis might give a clearer idea of the madness ahead: “Burke Devore is a middle-aged manager at a paper company when the cost-cutting ax falls, and he is laid off. Eighteen months later and still unemployed, he puts a new spin on his job search — with agonizing care, Devore finds the seven men in...

Neon has dropped the teaser for Park Chan-wook‘s 12th feature, No Other Choice, an adaptation of Donald Westlake’s 1997 novel, The Ax. Notable for playing a key role in the globalization of Korean cinema with releases like Oldboy and Lady Vengeance, the director, who must’ve been disappointed after Decision to Kill’s Oscar snub, is now eyeing history with his next movie.

Here’s something to be excited about: Park Chan-wook is back! The legendary Korean filmmaker – behind Oldboy, and The Handmaiden, and Decision To Leave, to name but a handful of his masterpieces – is returning with a new film, No Other Choice, after briefly turning to TV for The Sympathizer. And, fittingly for the filmmaker behind the thematically-linked Vengeance Trilogy, his latest looks to be a tale of jealousy, rage, and murder – a thriller with blackly comic elements. Check out the teaser:
There’s no official synopsis for No Other Choice yet, but it’s based on Donald Westlake’s novel The Ax – in which a man who finds himself cut loose after a lengthy employment resorts to desperate measures when he struggles to get a new job. In the lead role of Man-soo is Lee Byung-hun, who last worked with Director Park on his debut proper, 2000’s Joint Security Area.

Park Chan‑wook’s twelfth feature, No Other Choice, took a decisive step toward release this week as its first trailer dropped online and in Korean cinemas, confirming a September domestic bow, an anticipated Venice competition slot and a North‑American rollout via Neon early next year.
The 90‑second teaser introduces Man‑soo (Lee Byung‑hun), a middle‑aged paper‑mill manager who turns contract killer after losing his job, a premise lifted from Donald Westlake’s 1997 novel The Ax. Set against Jo Yeong‑wook’s discordant score, the footage intercuts fluorescent office corridors with blood‑red title cards, echoing the director’s trademark collision of elegance and violence. Son Ye‑jin appears as Man‑soo’s wife Mi‑ri, foregrounding the domestic fallout that Park has said he aims to “strengthen” compared with Costa‑Gavras’s 2005 French adaptation.

When Mitzi Peirone burst onto the genre scene with her daring debut Braid, she was heralded as a bold new voice in psychological horror. Now, the award-winning Italian director returns with Saint Clare, a haunting and blood-soaked Southern Gothic thriller that has already turning heads. Starring Bella Thorne in a career-defining performance, the film blends themes of morality, faith, and female rage into a surreal tale of vengeance that’s as thought-provoking as it is visceral.

A contemporary anime film has broken new ground for the medium by landing a spot on The New York Times' "100 Best Movies of the 21st Century" list. The work in question is none other than Hayao Miyazaki's Oscar Award-winning hit, Spirited Away.
The New York Times' official cinematic ranking includes films released since January 1, 2000. Among a voting pool consisting of more than "500 influential directors, actors and other notable names in Hollywood," Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away was selected as the ninth-best film of the past century. Initially released in 2001, the film is a poignant coming-of-age story set in an imaginative world inspired by Japanese mythology. While lovingly describing Spirited Away as the "Alice in Wonderland" of our age, The New York Times also praises it for intricate themes such as "loss of innocence" and "man's corruption of nature," which are famously woven throughout the narrative.

Yesterday, DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn revealed that Dcu "projects from Korea, Japan, and Brazil" are currently in development. Though he didn't elaborate, it was generally assumed that the Korean project he's referring to is the Huntress movie we first heard about back in 2023.
At the time, reports indicated that the film was moving forward with South Korean filmmaker and screenwriter Jung Byung-gil in talks to write and direct, and a rumor that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 star Pom Klementieff might be in talks to play the lead did the rounds shortly after.
Nexus Point News has now shared some new details on these international projects, and the site believes that Klementieff - who has Korean heritage - is still attached to play Helena Bertinelli, who will be "depicted as half-Korean and half-Italian."
If you only know her from the Gotg movies, Klementieff might seem like an odd pick to play Huntress,...

There are no movies immune to the constant churn of content requirements, and according to a new report from scooper DanielRPK, a true landmark movie is seemingly set to get a completely unnecessary follow-up over 20 years after the original delivered a brutal action thriller that was not for the squeamish.
According to the report, a sequel to Park Chan-wook’s 2003 revenge saga Oldboy is in early development, and the reaction from fans has not exactly been positive. If Daniel Rpk (aka Daniel Richtman) is correct, then Oldboy 2 is already in the pre-production stage, and many fans have demanded that this needs to be stopped and everyone must “protect the original at all costs.”
This is probably not a surprising reaction for a movie that holds a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and ended in a way that did not leave anyone thinking, “I wonder when the sequel will be out?...

Neon has acquired North American rights to “No Other Choice,” the next film from South Korean auteur Park Chan-wook, the distributor announced Wednesday.
Park’s 12th feature has been in the works for quite some time and only wrapped production in January, but we referred to the film nevertheless as a snub for the Cannes lineup in May (where he previously won Best Director for “Decision to Leave” in 2022), but a source tells IndieWire the film is expected to now premiere at the Venice Film Festival.

Adapted from Donald Westlake’s 1997 novel The Ax (and separate from Costa‑Gavras’s adaptation), No Other Choice follows Lee Byung-hun as Man‑soo, an ordinary man thrust into desperation after losing his long-held job. Over five intense months of filming (Aug 2024–Jan 2025), Park and his team, including Son Ye-jin and Park Hee-soon, built a razor-sharp narrative blending job‑market anxieties with unexpected moral darkness.
This marks Park’s 12th feature—his first high-profile foray into black comedy since Decision to Leave—and viewers are already bracing for his signature mix of emotional intensity,...
