Avis à la une
The story follows a group of friends in West Hollywood at a Halloween gathering, and is well written with some predictable yet well executed plot twists. The expected gore is also well done - just enough to keep you clutching at the arm rests! You can really tell that the writer/director is an avid fan of the genre, and that is what makes it great for the rest of us as well.
More importantly, it gives the queer audiences something of our own to relate to, after years of watching "Jamie Lee Curtis" et-al running from the likes of Jason, Freddy and Mike Myers. All I can say is it's about time!
Make no mistake, this is classic slasher territory. The film opens with the murder of a couple making out in a car parked in the woods and from there, well I'm sure you can fill the gap.
The originality here of course lies in the characters and for once, thank God, they are not the clichés one could have expected and feared. They are fun loving young men celebrating who they are (as opposed to so many miserable gay characters of the past struggling with their sexuality) and witty as hell, which makes for some funny lines here and there.
Don't get me wrong though. "Hellbent" doesn't play the self referential game that most modern slashers do. At times, the movie is tense and, I must admit, the last part got me on the edge of my seat. The characters are sympathetic and humane, albeit not quite fleshed out. The movie is well shot, the acting is convincing and some death scenes are quite impressive.
Sure, the plot is a bit thin but then again: it's only a slasher (hardly rocket science). Far from redefining the genre or breaking new grounds, the movie is at least honest in its intentions.
"Hellbent" is actually less of a gay movie for a strictly gay audience than it is a pure pop-corn movie for any open-minded movie goer looking for a genuine good time.
I was surprised to find myself actually caring who'd make it out alive but what's even more amazing is the potent blend of sex & death in the form of the supernatural (?) killer. Even behind his horned, three- quarter mask, "The Devil" is brutally handsome, the homo fatale embodiment of a demon lover one would surrender to willingly ("seasons don't fear the reaper -nor do the wind and the sun and the rain"). He also takes good head but be that as it may, this was wholesome entertainment compared to something like Peter de Rome's THE DESTROYING ANGEL.

- AnecdotesMeatLocker, the fetish club featured in the movie, is in reality a church. When filming ran late on Saturday night, the crew had to race to remove all the hanging rubber corpses before Sunday service.
- GaffesEddie's artificial eye is hazel but in the final scene the eye in the killer's mouth is blue.

Eddie: Hey. I saw you today. At the tattoo shop? We talked about the murders? Do you remember?
Jake: Yeah, I do. I do remember. Eddie, what do you want?
Eddie: Like to know your name.
Jake: I bet you would, all right. Look, do I have a stalker? Cause I know you're definitely not a real cop.
Eddie: You know, it's Halloween. My handcuffs are real.
Jake: [unimpressed] Right on. Unfortunately you have no gun.
Eddie: No, I left it at home.
Jake: So you do shoot, then.
Eddie: Yeah, I do. A little. I used to shoot because I wanted to be a cop. But I didn't pass the physical. I hurt my eye.
Jake: Your eye looks fine.
Eddie: Well, it's not. Half my field of vision is gone. My depth perception is shot. Can't even drive.
Jake: You don't hit on guys much, do you?
Eddie: No.
Jake: [holds his hand out to shake after a slight uncomfortable pause] Look, I'm Jake.
Eddie: [shaking hands] What changed your mind?
Eddie: I wanted to see you shoot.
