Moving On

Set in Newark, a small market town in the Midlands this is a docu-drama that uses real homeless young people to examine the issues. Drama and role playing also shows why they have got into the situation they are in now.

Shown as part of Birmingham Film Festival's youth series of short films this is one of the better ones. The film is a mix of role playing and narration. The role playing is weak because the kids play all the parts. For example a 16 year old playing an abusive father didn't really cut it for me thank you! But they do well anyway.

The real value is in the narration. It makes you realise that these people aren't just the drunk on the corner with the two skinny dogs but are real people in bad situations. The narration allows them to bring this across clearly and in there own words and it is actually involving and moving.

Overall this has it's weaknesses and uses cheap camera tricks to create interesting shots but it's value is brought out well by the very people it was made by and about.
