This is the excellent film of director Tapan Sinha. The story begins with 4 Bengali widows and their niece, and they meet a boy (actually the story writer) on their way to Puri. They have different purpose. Writer wants to be off the day to day life of Kolkata and the ladies are going to make their niece calm. Because she had a break up with her boyfriend recently. But as movie progresses we find that relation between the writer and the other characters evolves amazingly. Actually movie wants to teach us the wise philosophy that life is ahead of us and not behind. Director uses the scenario of Puri and Konark smartly and every character is very purposeful. Nice acting from every character and their gleaming appearance.
The film is a 3D interpretation of life full of contradictions. The first dimension delves into the conflict between philosophy of ascetic & sybaritic lifestyle. On one hand, there is the character of the protagonist who leads a nomadic life & on the other hand, there is the character of Pahari Sanyal who leads a debaucherous life. The second dimension sheds light on female psychology and misogyny in a subtle but harrowing way. I remember in particular the scene where the widows are talking about their bummers of widow life to the writer. The final dimension explores the strange psychology of affection precisely. In spite of being a stranger the writer gets loved by almost everyone he bumps into on his way. Along with this fascinating narrative structure the marvelous cinematography has rendered the milieu of Puri another character. Last but not the least, the spontaneous, realistic acting of every actor elevates the film to the expected echelon. Like most of the Tapan Sinha films, this one also has some enthralling visual touches. In the denouement, Renu & the author are not shown together. Rather, Renu is shown following the footsteps of the writer on the sea beach. Thus, a scintilla of doubt arises in our mind whether Renu gets entangled to the author, or she decides to become an itinerant like him. Satyajit Ray once said about 'The Southerner' by Jean Renoir "All the characters were gray characters... That interested me greatly". The same can be said about this film. Here no one is good or bad. Everyone has his/her own faults. That's why every character seems to be so much human.
So, to cut a long story short, this film is a real treat for the eyes...Adios...
