Avis à la une
Watched this on holiday in France and it really took me by surprise as I could not read the cover on the DVD but it did have English sub-titles and that was good enough for me. Without giving the plot away, it is a brutal film and very realistic, the acting is some of the best I have seen, the storyline has many twists and turns and keeps your interest throughout the film. The family concerned in the film are a typical multi ethnic family living in the suburbs of Paris, poor but have a strong family bond. The story basically starts off when one of the brothers visited by an old rival from the past which sets off a chain of events which gets more and more catastrophic as the film goes on, different cultures clash head on. As I said this is a brilliant film and I highly recommend it, but it is brutal and the realism will startle you. Top film!
It takes place in 13th arrondissement - district - of Paris, mostly Chinatown, with huge towers where most Asian community from China and Vietnam live, with its traffic, mafia, underworld.... Ths romance scheme could be some kind of a ROMEO AND JULIETTE tale, because of a love story, two groups of people will get involved in a tragic feud. It is very convincing in terms of actiong, performances, especially Joe Prestia in a supporting character. Don't forget he was a great kick boxing champion. This is a gripping movie, tense, certainly not boring, with social surroundings. One of my favourite from director Karim Dridi. Samuel Le Bihan has a presence, good physique but I think he is a bad actor, he doesn't know how to speak in front of a camera. His best role will remain for me the terrific TOTAL WESTERN.
It's not, it's a romantic drama and a good one at that. The setting against low class France and its different immigrant groups is excellent but the story is classic of course. I would very much have enjoyed some more depth towards the story of the two siblings, more of a social look at their destiny in their new homeland perhaps, the elements are there and that would have put the film in the top. Now i give it a 7 but it's still very close to a 8 or maybe even 9. I recommend it to the cineast thus meaning people who know how to appreciate both a "foreign" film and a good fighting flick, if you're out for some good knuckle action you should seek elsewhere.
This seems to be marketed as a martial arts film, but it's really a love story with the necessary conflict and heartbreak. The kickboxing scenes are limited to ring events; arson and fights outside the ring are realistic and not cartoonish. I watched a Region 0 DVD with English subtitles; I could not tell, exactly, which audio was French, which was Chinese, which was Thai. Samuel Le Bihan sings in Thai! I read elsewhere that the Ramirez brothers are first-generation French of Spanish parents; maybe I'm a barbarian American, but I don't see where that's explained or hinted at in the film, unless it's the name "Ramirez." The actors all do a good job. A lot of the personal conflicts do not get resolved; how many do in real life? I am glad I saw this movie.
