‘Thanksgiving’s Eli Roth and Jeff Rendell Hit a High Note With ’The Piano Killer’ Trailer [Exclusive]
Image
Nearly two decades ago, Eli Roth teased the world with a slasher flick centered around Turkey Day and, several years later, that movie served up a feature-sized production through Thanksgiving. Now, the celebrated filmmaker is in the trailer business again with the latest short-form project to come out under his new banner, The Horror Section. Titled The Piano Killer, the short but sweet project, which Roth created alongside his longtime collaborator, Jeff Rendell (Thanksgiving), gives fans yet another imaginative bit of content that could easily make its way into a longer format in the future. Ahead of the full trailer’s arrival in cinemas beginning on August 15 as part of the preshow entertainment prior to Joe Begos’ Jimmy & Stiggs, Collider is excited to give audiences a taste of the perfectly tuned brutality to come.

A murderous madman is on the loose in our sneak peek of the teaser for The...

Hostel TV series starring Paul Giamatti finds a home at Peacock
Image
Two years ago, Eli Roth said that he was interested in returning to the Hostel and Cabin Fever franchises – and within six months of him saying that, we learned that a Hostel TV series was in the works, with Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers) attached to star in the show. It was said that the series would be coming our way from Fifth Season, the studio behind Apple’s Severance, with Roth, Chris Briggs, and Mike Fleiss on board as executive producers. Roth and Briggs are also writing the project, which Roth will be directing, the aim being to reinvent the franchise as an “elevated thriller.” Now, a year later, Variety reports that the Hostel TV series has found a home at the Peacock streaming service!

As Variety reminds us, in the Hostel franchise, innocent tourists are kidnapped by a mysterious group known as the Elite Hunting Club operating out of Eastern Europe,...

'Hostel' Makes Surprising Return in New Peacock Series Starring Paul Giamatti
Image
Fans of the horror genre, Eli Roth and Paul Giamatti have a reason to celebrate today. While that trio may not appear to go together on paper, it's going to potentially lead to seeing one of Roth's more high-profile releases getting to continue its brand of traveling overseas torture on the Peacock streaming service.

Per Variety, the HostelTV series is officially being developed at Peacock, with Paul Giamatti attached to star. The project was first announced in 2024 with Giamatti's involvement, but it had yet to find a home. Roth will write, direct, and executive produce the series, while Chris Briggs and Mike Fleiss, who have been involved since the original 2005 film, will both serve as executive producers on the project. While plot details are unknown, it will likely continue the franchise's tendency to make audiences fear being hunted as tourists in a foreign land.

While Giamatti's pedigree as a...

The Green Inferno Climbs Prime Video Charts 10 Years Later As Horror Fans Rediscover Eli Roth’s Cult Classic
Image
Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno (Photo Credit – Prime Video)

Prime Video has pushed The Green Inferno back into the spotlight, nearly ten years after its theatrical release. Eli Roth’s Amazonian nightmare, once dismissed as a niche horror curiosity, has clawed its way into the top 10 global Prime Video rankings. According to Flixpatrol, it took the ninth spot yesterday, with 72 points on its very first day. This is a notable bump for a film that barely crossed $13 million at the box office when it opened.

What Is The Green Inferno About?

The Green Inferno brought a brutal throwback to the Italian cannibal genre, long before Midsommar sent audiences spinning. The story, inspired by Cannibal Holocaust, throws student activists into the Amazon rainforest, only for them to be captured by a flesh-eating tribe. It is more blood-soaked than most horror films made in the last decade, and it never really aimed for mainstream comfort.

‘Don’t Let the Cat Out’ Claws into FrightFest
Image
When grief meets the grotesque, expect dark comedy and outright chaos. Don’t Let the Cat Out makes its UK premiere at FrightFest’s opening night on 21 August, promising a bizarre blend of feline fanaticism and body-hopping horror. Director Tim Cruz, whose atmospheric flair has previously surfaced in Ladybug and Secrets at the Lake, turns his lens to Louisville, where a soul-transfer ritual to save a dying cat descends into gleeful mayhem.

At the heart of this 95-minute tale is Evelyn, played by Cerina Vincent, known for her breakouts in Cabin Fever and Not Another Teen Movie. Unable to face her pet’s impending death, she kidnaps house-sitter Charlie and attempts to channel her cat’s spirit into his body. What begins as an absurd escape from sorrow spirals into a series of surreal, comedic horrors that explore how far we’ll go to postpone goodbye. Anthony Del Negro co-writes...

Eli Roth’s Gruesome 38% Rotten Tomatoes ‘Cannibal Holocaust’ Clone Is a Sleeper Hit on Streaming
Image
Before there was Midsommar, there was The Green Inferno. The controversial horror film, directed by Eli Roth, riffed on the Italian exploitation movie Cannibal Holocaust, and followed a group of activists who are taken prisoner by a cannibalistic tribe in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. The Green Inferno was a particularly gruesome film, far more extreme than most mainstream horror that's produced these days. While it didn't set the box office on fire — it made its money back, though — the movie was almost engineered for home video success. And as it celebrates a decade, it has witnessed a spike in viewership on Prime Video.

According to FlixPatrol, The Green Infernoclaimed the ninth spot on the global Prime Video charts on July 18, earning 72 points on its first day of availability. The list was topped by the holdover hit Heads of State, starring John Cena, Idris Elba, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

Even after 20 years, The Descent remains one of the best British horror films
Image
Neil Marshall’s The Descent has lost none of its effect in 20 years and modern horror films could certainly learn a thing or two from it. More on that below. Spoilers!

The UK has a long history of producing exceptional horror films. Just look at the legacy of Hammer, Ben Wheatley’s early work or 28 Days Later and its belated sequel 28 Years Later. And that’s just scratching the surface; there’s plenty more to scare your socks off in Britain’s horror pantheon.

It doesn’t get much more terrifying than Neil Marshall’s The Descent, however. Released in 2005, it felt refreshingly old school after the recent releases of Eli Roth’s Cabin Fever and James Wan’s Saw and the rising trend of “torture porn”. The Descent was a straightforward thrill ride that left you on the edge of your seat, with great creature design and believable side characters,...

Eli Roth On His Indie Studio’s First Release ‘Jimmy And Stiggs’ & The Company’s Plan To Launch “Four Releases A Year”
Image
“I’ve always wanted to have my own shop where I could write, produce, direct, and now release my own films,” veteran horror filmmaker Eli Roth explains when quizzed on the origins of his newly launched, horror-focused indie studio The Horror Section.

“And we’re off to a great start,” he adds, pointing to Jimmy and Stiggs, the company’s first official release, and the latest feature from cult indie horror filmmaker Joe Begos, which hits cinemas next month.

Written and directed by Begos, the film follows an out of work filmmaker called Jimmy who, after a shitstorm of bad news, spirals into an out of control bender in which he claims to have been abducted by aliens. Fearing they’ll come back, he contacts his old friend Stiggs to help him gear up for war.

The film debuted at Beyond Fest before playing Sitges. Roth describes the gory flick...

Van Sant’s ‘Psycho’ Never Justifies Its Decision to Impersonate Hitchcock [Revenge of the Remakes]
Image
Alfred Hitchcock’s influence over the horror genre is towering. “Hitchcockian” is one of the few namesake descriptors used to describe (typically lesser) copycats. Film courses teach Hitchcock’s catalog as epitomic examples of tension, mystery, and suspense, while filmmakers worship Hitchcock through tributes and facsimiles. Anyone would kill to have a Rope or Vertigo on their resume, but few will—even if they attempt a shot-for-shot remake.

Enter Gus Van Sant, hot off the success of 1997’s Good Will Hunting. Van Sant’s adoration of Hitchcock is well-documented, as well as his desire to remake Psycho with zero alterations. “It’s a marketing scheme,” Van Sant once answered in response to why Universal would greenlight his remake, continuing, “because they have this little thing they’ve forgotten about that they could put in the marketplace and make money from.” It’s hardly what I’d want to hear from...

Eli Roth Says Joe Begos' Horror Project 'Jimmy & Stiggs' Will "Mess Some People Up"
Image
Eli Roth, the horror filmmaker most famous for movies like Cabin Fever and Thanksgiving, has decided to give underrated filmmaker Joe Begos a chance to play his latest film on the big screen. The movie is titled Jimmy & Stiggs, and upon a screening, Roth was so impressed that he made it a personal mission to plan a theatrical release. The Hostel director says that Jimmy & Stiggs stands out because it "has such life, and it is going to mess some people up."

Judging by Begos' previous filmography, Roth may have a strong point, as Jimmy & Stiggs is the latest in a career filled with horror entries so graphic that they're too intense for those with a weak stomach. Per the report by IndieWire, the duo was present at a Q&a session after an early screening of Jimmy & Stiggs. The event was the result of Roth's...

New Horror Movie Starring An Oscar Winner Debuts On Rotten Tomatoes With Rare 0% Score
Image
A new horror movie has earned a 0% score during its Rotten Tomatoes debut. Like any genre, horror tends to have major critical ups and downs. While many entries in the genre are well-respected classics with stellar reviews, including 2017's Get Out (which has a near-perfect 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes), 1991's The Silence of the Lambs (95%), 1975's Jaws (97%), and 1960's Psycho (97%), others have been widely lambasted, including 1987's Jaws: The Revenge (2%), 2002's FeardotCom (3%), and 2022's Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey (3%).

However, early 2025 has been a fertile period for horror movies that are both critically and commercially successful. While April and May have seen the most success, three of the Top 20 highest-grossing movies of 2025 in general are entries in the genre, namely February's The Monkey (which has a 78% Rotten Tomatoes score and grossed $68.6 million worldwide against a reported budget of $11 million), May's Final Destination: Bloodlines, and April's Ryan Coogler's Sinners. So far, June...

Jason Constantine Dies: Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-President Was 55

Constantine has been an executive at Lionsgate nearly since its inception, starting his career more than 25 years ago as a director of acquisitions at Lionsgate’s predecessor Trimark Pictures.

His run at Lionsgate spanned its cornerstone $1 billion-grossing franchises John Wick and Saw. He was a huge proponent of the Saw franchise from the onset, leading the studio’s push to acquire it after watching a brief concept short.

Constantine was also involved with The Expendables franchise; Paul Haggis’ Oscar Best Picture winner Crash; Lee Daniels’ Precious, nominated for five Academy Awards and winner of two Oscars; Rian Johnson’s Oscar-nominated $312 million global-grossing Knives Out; the Erwin Brothers’ faith-based smash I Can Only Imagine; worldwide action hits The Hitman’s Bodyguard, Kick Ass, Rambo: Last Blood, Angel Has Fallen and...

A Steven Spielberg Note Changed A Character In A Jack Black Dark Fantasy Movie
Image
John Bellairs' "The House with a Clock in Its Walls" is the definition of a cozy horror story. Bellairs' 1973 book fuses the supernatural with the mundane, where the familiar feels a bit off-kilter until it fully embraces the fantastical. It's gothic horror meets weird fiction for young adults, evoking unbearable suspense from the moment our protagonist moves into the town of New Zebedee, Michigan. Given how delightfully spooky this book is, it is no surprise that Hollywood decided to adapt it into a dark fantasy comedy aimed at a younger demographic in 2018. Although key elements from Bellairs' gothic horror tale were changed or omitted, Eli Roth's "The House with a Clock in Its Walls" can be deemed a decently enjoyable adventure. However, if you're partial towards the rustic charm of a book whose horror thrives on subtlety, then Roth's CGI-infested, pop-colored extravaganza might start to feel a bit like an unbearable migraine.

'I'm Really Excited': 1 of 2023's Best Horror Movies Gets an Exciting Sequel Update From Returning Star
Image
Thanksgivingstar Nell Verlaque has offered an exciting update on the horror movie's sequel. Eli Roth will return as director for the second installment of the horror franchise.

Verlaque, who played serial killer John Carver's nemesis Jessica in the first film, told Deadline on Monday (May 19) that she was "really excited" to get back on set for Thanksgiving 2. She also confirmed that filming is tentatively scheduled to take place very soon.

Nell Verlaque Offers New Hints about Thanksgiving 2

"I think we will be filming this year," she confirmed. "I actually just saw Eli, and we’re talking about some plot points, so I’m really excited for it."

Roth's 2023 hit made more than $46 million at the worldwide box office against a modest budget of only $15 million. The holiday-themed horror movie achieved critical acclaim as well as commercial success, as it received a 84% critical score and a 78% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Eli Roth claims his next movie will be even more terrifying than Hostel
Image
Horror filmmaker Eli Roth is ready to develop his next terrifying movie. While we wait for the follow-up to 2023's holiday slasher Thanksgiving, it looks like Roth is setting his sights onto a new project called Ice Cream Man.

Media Capital Technologies (McT) and Roth's own independent studio The Horror Section will fully finance the film (via Variety). Given that Roth is relatively well-known in the filmmaking world, it might come as a surprise that his movie is getting the indie production treatment, but when you learn more about Ice Cream Man, you'll understand why.

Notably, he claims it will likely be his "most terrifying and insane film to date." And considering this is the man that brought us the Hostel franchise, that's saying something.

The first Hostel is still considered one of the most disturbing horror movies ever made, perhaps most infamously for the graphic eyeball torture scene that happens near the end.

Eli Roth Directing ‘Ice Cream Man,’ His ‘Most Terrifying and Insane’ Film Yet, With Media Capital Technologies and The Horror Section Financing and Producing (Exclusive)
Image
Media Capital Technologies (McT) and The Horror Section will fully finance and produce “Ice Cream Man,” Eli Roth’s new horror film.

Roth, a master of the genre whose work includes the “Hostel” and “Cabin Fever” franchise, returns with the story of an idyllic summer town descending into madness when an ice cream man serves kids sweet delights with horrifying results. Beyond that sparse teaser, the plot details are being kept under wraps.

Roth wrote the script and will direct from an original idea he has had for over twenty years. He says that the delay is because studios got antsy about financing it. The filmmaker launched The Horror Section earlier this year with the goal of making the kind of independent scary movies that made him famous.

Roth will also produce “Ice Cream Man” alongside McT’s Christopher Woodrow and Raj Singh and Cream’s Kate Harrison. Executive producers...

Eli Roth Claymation Series 'The Rotten Fruit' Available to Stream
Image
Did you know that multi-hyphenated actor/writer/director/producer Eli Roth has also dabbled in claymation? Way back in 2000, the Inglourious Basterds star and director of such horror hits as Hostel, Cabin Fever, and Thanksgiving, teamed up with his friend Noah Belson to create an eight-episode series of shorts about a bunch of music-playing fruits called The Rotten Fruit. And while the now-defunct Z.com show only premiered three of the eight total episodes, short film platform WeShort has made them all available for the first time in 25 years.

In a new interview with IndieWire, Roth and Belson reminisced about the web series' creation while the duo were down and out, budding Hollywood hopefuls. Childhood friends from Newton, Massachusetts, the duo also explained their hopes to revive the series and turn it into something bigger and more akin to a modern satire. "Give us 25 more years, maybe," Belson — whom many...

Eli Roth Announces Surprise ‘Rotten Fruit’ Reunion — Punk Claymation Series Now Streaming Unseen Episodes
Image
We’ve seen horror director Eli Roth split open skulls before, but the jack-of-many-trades and (surprise!) stop-motion animator has never been stuck in your head like he will be with “The Rotten Fruit.” Catchy bordering on torturous, the theme song for Roth’s latest archival release goes a little something like…

♫ Rotten Fruit… We’re The Rotten Fruit… The most popular band in the wooorld! ♫

Celebrating its 25th anniversary by finally making its streaming debut on the platform WeShort today, April 18, “The Rotten Fruit” is a cult classic web series co-created by Roth and Noah Belson. A childhood friend of the gonzo filmmaker, better known to genre fans for his credit as Guitar Man in “Cabin Fever,” Belson grew up making movies with Roth in Newton, Massachusetts. While living in L.A. trying to break into the industry together, the pair developed “The Rotten Fruit” for the now-defunct Z.com...

Borderlands | “You can’t prep a movie on that scale over Zoom,” says director Eli Roth
Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, and Eli Roth in La Prophétie de l'horloge (2018)
Director Eli Roth has talked about the disappointment of his videogame adaptation, Borderlands, and says its problems were partly due to Covid.

Where such videogame adaptations as The Super Mario Bros Movie and now A Minecraft Movie have made millions for their studios, Lionsgate’s Borderlands landed with a bit of a thud in 2024. Reviews were harsh, and the box office numbers were even more gloomy: it made $33m from a budget of around $110m (plus more for marketing and so forth).

Although director Eli Roth put a brave face on as he did the promotional rounds at the time, there had been rumours for over a year that things were going awry behind the scenes. First came reports that Craig Mazin had his name taken out of its credits; Mazin denied this, but to this day the film’s listed screenwriter is one Joe Crombie, which appears to be an Alan Smithee-like pseudonym.

Marshmallow Review: New Summer Camp Horror Murders Your Expectations …And Lots of Kids [Panic Fest 2025]
If there is one thing Horror movies have taught me, it’s that summer camps are the safest places on Earth. Nothing bad has ever happened at a summer camp in Horror movies. Celebrating its World Premiere at Panic Fest 2025, where it also took home Best Feature and Best Director, Marshmallow is a choose-your-own-adventure style Horror flick that plays on your expectations and remixes the classic Spooky Summer Camp template in clever and unpredictable ways.

If you’ve seen a handful of movies in a specific subgenre, the worry about spending time on a new one is that you’ve been there, seen that. Marshmallow knows that you’ve seen Sleepaway Camp and The Burning and Friday The 13th, and cleverly plays into those...

A Forgotten Body Horror Masterpiece from 2002 Is One Its French Director Still Hasn’t Rewatched: ‘I Will Never See It Again’
Image
In the early 2000s, at the same time directors like Eli Roth and Rob Zombie were pushing the limits of violence in American cinema with “Cabin Fever” and “The Devil’s Rejects,” a parallel movement emerged in France. Dubbed cinema du corps or “New French Extremity,” the trend was characterized by extremely confrontational horror films that assaulted the audience with their combination of filmmaking skill and visceral gore.

Many of these movies no longer feel quite so shocking, their tropes now absorbed into mainstream horror. Marina de Van’s “In My Skin,” however, retains its power to disturb 23 years after its release. The story of a young woman (played by de Van herself) whose addiction to self-mutilation escalates in increasingly graphic body horror set pieces, “In My Skin” remains profoundly unsettling because there’s no barrier between the audience and the filmmaker’s subconscious — de Van invites us into her darkest...

From the dark caves of The Descent to the shark-infested waters of The Shallows, seeing how characters could survive nature and all of its elements drew audiences in, especially in the 2000s and 2010s. 2024 brought new releases Arcadian and Never Let Go to the survival horror subgenre. The A Quiet Place franchise received universal praise from critics and audiences, and all three entries performed extraordinarily well at the box office. Seeing characters facing more realistic, terrifying scenarios could often evoke more fear than the paranormal or supernatural could. The average person was far more likely to find themselves fighting to survive the elements rather than a demon or ghost haunting their home or following them around every street corner. Broken bones, wild animal attacks, and being unable to take on Mother Nature were far more likely to have happened to the...

The Worst Stephen King Movie, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
In 2006, Stephen King wrote an apocalyptic horror novel that remolded the contagion metaphor into something atypical. While zombies are front and center in this paranoia-fueled tale, these creatures are not reanimated corpses who have mutated beyond recognition, à la the infected in "The Last of Us." Instead, these zombies are former cell phone users who have transformed after a global network signal called The Pulse is sent out, turning them into rabid killers. This novel, "Cell," captures the unprecedented chaos brought about by this unlikely situation, with a struggling artist named Clayton serving as our entry point into this world on the brink of collapse.

It is worth noting that King wrote "Cell" during a time when cell phones weren't as accessible as today (to the point that they have evolved into a necessity), offering a technologically-wary perspective of a phenomenon yet to happen. This pessimistic outlook serves the purpose...

George Folsey Jr., Longtime Film Editor for John Landis, Dies at 85
Image
George Folsey Jr., the longtime producer and film editor for director John Landis, has died at the age of 85, according to his family.

The son of 13-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer George J. Folsey, whose credits included “Meet Me in St. Louis” and “Forbidden Planet,” Folsey Jr. got his start in editing at Kabc in Los Angeles, where he edited documentaries and news reports for broadcast in the 1960s.

He then moved into cinema by learning the trade at MGM, where his father had worked, alongside “Grand Prix” Oscar-winning editor Henry Berman. His first feature film project was Alexander Singer’s “Glass Houses,” a 1972 film in which Folsey was editor, cinematographer and producer.

A year later, Folsey was hired to edit John Landis’ debut feature film “Schlock,” a sendup of “King Kong” in which an ape man chased out of his cave wanders into a Southern California neighborhood and develops an unrequited crush on a teen girl.

This Disturbing Body Horror Moment From Eli Roth Was Based on Real Life
Image
Eli Roth is synonymous with gruesome and gory movies. A renowned member of “The Splat Pack”, the director is known for pushing the boundaries with extensive torture sequences within his movies. Roth has often taken inspiration from real-life events, with Hostel inspired by a horrifying murder website. However, it is his directorial debut Cabin Fever that has the grossest real-life connection, with the movie’s events inspired by a real life infection Roth once contracted.

"Sickest Thing You've Ever Done": Eli Roth Beat Quentin Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez For Grossest Grindhouse Scare
Image
Eli Roth’s trampoline scene from Grindhouse stands as one of the anthology’s most infamous moments, and the horror director returns to break down the iconic kill. Released in 2007, Grindhouse is a double feature paying homage to 1970s exploitation cinema, comprised of Quentin Tarantino's slasher Death Proof and Robert Rodriguez's zombie-comedy Planet Terror. The anthology also included faux trailers by prominent horror directors, including Roth’s Thanksgiving, a holiday-themed slasher trailer packed with over-the-top gore and satirical humor.

In a conversation with Screen Rant’s Joe Deckelmeier at Fan Expo San Francisco (where Screen Rant was a media partner), Roth revisited Thanksgiving's now-iconic trampoline gag, where a cheerleader doing a split meets a gruesome end on a knife. Roth contended that this scene became the standout gross-out moment in Grindhouse, beating the efforts of his fellow gore directors. Here's what he had to say:

'Thanksgiving 2' Horror Sequel Gets a Wel-Timed Update from Director Eli Roth
Image
Eli Roth, the director of horror films like Hostel, Cabin Fever, and last year’s slasher gem, Thanksgiving, has offered a well-timed update about the continuation of the holiday horror movie that terrified slasher and Black Friday fans last year. The sequel to Thanksgiving was quickly greenlit in November 2023, and Roth is now preparing to begin shooting next March. He also confirms it won’t be a prequel, some characters will return, and he will not spend more money than is required to successfully bring the "John Carver" back for more.

Speaking to IndieWire one year after Thanksgiving was released to both audience and critical acclaim, Roth reveals his next step is to make an equally appealing sequel that will satisfy horror hounds. The first outing holds an 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and even though it’s a young movie, it has more than enough entertainment value to become a Thanksgiving horror staple.

A Very Eli Roth ‘Thanksgiving’: How the Horror Director Found a Franchise in Black Friday Satire
Image
Turkey toys with detachable heads. Coloring books about a killer pilgrim. A gruesome holiday board game that encourages you to die. Framed by a cornucopia of these twisted “Thanksgiving” keepsakes, director Eli Roth arrives on Zoom as happy as a clam.

“It’s all so perverse,” the Massachusetts native told IndieWire, festively shuffling through the collectibles on his desk in LA. “It’s this meta-absurdity of merchandising a movie that is also a comment on merchandising — but we’re totally aware of it. Everyone is in on the joke.”

Last November, Roth made his highly anticipated return to the horror genre and delivered an instant holiday classic. A vicious satire about American consumerism, “Thanksgiving” opens with a Black Friday sale that turns into a deadly stampede. If you haven’t seen it yet, the mass casualty event is bloody and brutal but not without its charms. There’s a football...

Lance Reddick's Lost Character Explained (& How He Connects To The Show's Biblical Themes)
Image
While Lost may center around the main character passengers of Oceanic Flight 815, the J.J. Abrams show featured many memorable guest stars, including the late, great Lane Reddick. The series ran for six seasons, from 2004-2010, and became an absolute water cooler show for North American audiences. Fewer shows had more fan theories than Lost, as viewers loved to debate the meaning of supernatural phenomena like the Smoke Monster and "The Others".

One of the most popular Lost fan theories is that Oceanic Flight 818's survivors are actually dead, and that the island is their purgatory. This theory is supported by the large amount of biblical references in the series, both overt and implied. For example, the beloved character John Locke is seen as a representation of Jesus Christ. Lost network ABC leaned into this in a particularly memorable piece of promotional art that depicted the show's cast posed like The Last Supper painting,...

Emily Fornell's Surprising NCIS Death Explained
Image
Since its debut in 2003, NCIS has captivated audiences with its gripping naval investigations and complex characters, including Emily Fornell, whose sudden death shocked fans. Over the years, the CBS procedural NCIS universe has introduced numerous recurring characters, with Tobias Fornell and Diane Sterling being particularly memorable. FBI Agent Tobias Fornell (Joe Spano) is a close ally of NCIS Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), while Diane Sterling (Melinda McGraw) is Fornell's ex-wife and Gibbs' second ex-wife. Their unique dynamic and enduring camaraderie provided a compelling backdrop, particularly when their daughter, Emily Fornell (Juliette Angelo), became involved.

As a teenager, Emily Fornell first appeared in season 4 and quickly became a beloved recurring character. Her journey through adolescence included struggles with addiction, which was poignantly explored in later seasons. Emily's relationship with her father, Tobias, was both touching and heartbreaking, as he tirelessly tried to help her through recovery. However, her...

Until Dawn Video Game Adaptation Sets Release Date
Image
Sony Pictures announced the release date for its upcoming Until Dawn film adaptation. Based on the 2015 PlayStation exclusive horror game of the same title, Until Dawn follows eight friends and frenemies as they survive the night at a remote mountain retreat while a mysterious killer hunts them down. The feature, directed by David F. Sandberg, will arrive in theaters next spring, April 25, 2025.

The drama horror game was originally created by Supermassive Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Players control the eight young adults as they explore Blackwood Mountain and fight to survive. The game received great praise for the juicy teen drama of the character stories, impressive graphics, and immersive environment. Fans loved the uniquely featured butterfly effect of the game, in which players must make choices that change the potential ending of the story. All playable characters can survive or die, depending on the decisions made. Rolling Stone called Until Dawn,...

Why Cabin Fever's Pancakes Scene Is So Weird
Image
The Cabin Fever pancakes scene might be the strangest in the Eli Roth debut horror movie, and it still makes very little sense all these years later. Roth has had a varied directorial career, and whether one loves or hates his films, it's hard to deny that they're usually at least memorable. That began with Cabin Fever (2002), a bizarre blend of horror and comedy. One minute, a character shaves their leg's skin off due to a terrifying flesh-eating virus; the next, Roth makes a cameo as a stoner. The tone of Cabin Fever is all over the place.

How much of that odd sensibility was informed by Roth himself becomes quite apparent when watching the 2016 Cabin Fever remake, which stuck to the original very closely but seemed to lack any of its charm or heart. As much weirdness as can be found in Cabin Fever, the award for the oddest scene goes to the "Pancakes!

Review: Speak No Evil is an American Remake Done Right
Image
James Watkins' Speak No Evil comes with the undetachable baggage of remaking Christian Tafdrup's Danish day-ruiner from only two years ago. Blumhouse's initial announcement made me balk — Tafdrup's Speak No Evil is a modern feel-bad destroyer of souls. Thankfully, Watkins handles this Americanization with the utmost "justification" (in remake terminology). It's Blumhouse's best movie this year by a country mile, evoking the essence of Tafdrup's vacation nightmare while swerving into a climax that aggressively differentiates itself. Watkins understands cinematic misery (see 2008's Eden Lake) but doesn't care to replicate Tafdrup's seismic shocks — 2024's Speak No Evil is its own dreadful beast.

Ben Dalton (Scoot McNairy), his wife Louise (Mackenzie Davis), and his anxious daughter Agnes (Alix West Lefler) are American transplants soaking in poolside sunshine away from their soggy London residence. Ben's been laid off recently, and Louise can't reestablish her public relations career — they're in a transitional rut.

Since Evil Dead put lvarez on the map as an exciting new voice in the genre, hes become one of the most sought-after horror directors in Hollywood. Every Eli Roth Movie, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Eli Roth's Borderlands was a big-budget flop, missing the mark by casting against type and aiming for a PG-13 rating. Death Wish's 2018 remake lacked the passion of the original, failing to evoke the same outrage. The House with a Clock in Its Walls aimed for fun, but ended up feeling like a third-rate Harry Potter clone.

From Cabin Fever to Borderlands, Eli Roth has had a lot of ups and downs in his filmmaking career, but which one of his movies is the best (and which one is the worst)? Roth first broke out with his low-budget debut feature Cabin Fever, about a group of college kids who travel to a remote cabin in the woods, where they encounter a deadly flesh-eating virus. Cabin Fever put Roth on the map and established him as one of the most exciting new voices in horror cinema.

What followed was a surprisingly varied career.

Borderlands Dismal Rotten Tomatoes Shouldn't Be A Surprise After Brutal 13-Year Trend
Image
Borderlands' Rotten Tomatoes score shouldn't shock anyone given director Eli Roth's history with critics. The movie mixes sci-fi, action, and comedy, featuring Cate Blanchett leading a ragtag crew. Despite its popularity as a video game, Borderlands flopped at the box office due to its predictable plot.

Although Borderlands might have a disastrous Rotten Tomatoes score, this shouldn't come as a surprise thanks to director Eli Roths history with critics. Borderlands is an adaptation of the video game franchise of the same name. A blend of sci-fi, action, and comedy, Borderlands sees Cate Blanchetts outlaw Lilith cobble together a mismatched crew to track down and later save Deukalian Atlas daughter Tiny Tina. This set of misfits includes Jack Blacks Claptrap, Kevin Harts Roland, and Florian Munteanus hulking Psycho Krieg. By Borderlands ending, this unlikely, dysfunctional gang ends up working together to save the universe from Atlas.

If this plot sounds derivative,...

You Can Tell Eli Roth Made His Acclaimed $46.5 Million Horror Movie At The Same Time As Borderlands
Image
Thanksgiving was a critical and box office success in 2023 with an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 84%. Borderlands, on the other hand, received negative reviews and was a commercial failure, debuting with a 0% score. Eli Roth prioritized Thanksgiving over finishing Borderlands, leading to speculation about his involvement in the latter.

It's evident that Eli Roth made his acclaimed 2023 horror film Thanksgiving at the same time he made Borderlands. Although Borderlands features a star-studded cast, including Kevin Hart, Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, and Jamie Lee Curtis, the film has become a critical and commercial failure following its wide theatrical release on August 9, 2024. Borderlands debuted with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 0% before slightly increasing to its current score of 10% as of the time of writing. Borderlands was Eli Roth's follow-up to Thanksgiving, which received much more praise from audiences and critics alike.

Roth has made several films in Borderlands including Cabin Fever, Hostel,...

Eli Roth’s Movies Ranked, from ‘Cabin Fever’ and ‘Hostel’ to ‘Thanksgiving’ and ‘Borderlands’
Image
It’s a bad time to be Eli Roth.

A miscalculation of near-mythic proportions, “Borderlands” has a whopping six percent on Rotten Tomatoes heading into its opening weekend. Those bad reviews (IndieWire gave it a “C-“) are the least of the “Hostel” filmmaker’s problems, as Lionsgate’s misguided video game adaptation has inspired assessments of not only the director’s filmography but also whether his impact on pop culture has been at all valuable.

This ranking can’t account for all of that. If you’re a fan of the types of genre films that Roth makes, read on. If you’re not, do not pass go, do not collect $200, and enjoy the “Borderlands” dogpile — a massive multiplayer online affair now available free of charge.

Last year, Roth’s meaty and murderous “Thanksgiving” did well for the provocateur. The seasonal holiday slasher, starring Nell Verlaque, Patrick Dempsey, and Addison Rae among others,...

“I do think there’s a tremendous amount of ageism in Hollywood”: Borderlands Director Eli Roth Name Drops 2 Actors after Claiming Hollywood Avoids Old Stars Like the Plague
Image
In recent years the conversation around adequate representation in all aspects of filmmaking, has been gaining a new momentum. Audiences demand for a diverse range of actors onscreen and age is one of the many factors. It is a known fact that actors in Hollywood have a certain time-limit, beyond which they do not receive enough offers.

Recently director Eli Roth restarted the discussion around the industry’s treatment of older actors and stated how they tend to disregard their talent just due to age. He then proceeded to name two senior actors he approached for his movie Borderlands, further cementing that age doesn’t matter to him.
