Skip The Preliminaries, Enjoy The Rumble!

After experimenting with the new "Royal Rumble" event in 1988, the WWF turned out a much stronger showing with this event, as it begins to take a life of its own instead of just serving as an appetizer for the big Wrestlemania event.

The events of the big Rumble (especially involving Andre the Giant!) are hilarious as usual, with all sorts of shenanigans and crazy antics transpiring. As a child, I was captivated by the drama of the event, but as an adult I almost look back at it as a comedy!

One caveat: skip the preliminary matches that take place in advance of the main event. They are poor matches and only serve to prolong character plots, not really advance them.

Anecdotes
According to Bill Eadie & Barry Darsow (Demolition Ax & Smash), neither of them knew until their theme music played for the second time at the number 2 entrance spot, that they were going to have to wrestle each other in the Royal Rumble match. They had not planned to wrestle each other, as Vince McMahon & Pat Patterson purposely did not tell them their entrance number. Ax & Smash had to improvise their spots for the first two minutes, until Andre the Giant came out as the number three entrant. Bill said he was relieved when Andre came out, so the tag team partners could stop having to fight each other.

Gaffes
When introducing the posedown, Mean Gene Okerlund says, "Here's the one that you and the world HAS been waiting for." (Incorrect grammar.)
