Image
Nile Entertainment, the Nigerian distribution company launched last year by veteran film executive Moses Babatope, has signed a first-look deal with Action Xtreme, the genre label of the U.K.’s Sovereign Films, to co-produce and distribute a slate of action films and series in Africa.

The partnership aims to bring fresh African stories to the world stage while giving Nollywood talent and crew opportunities to work on high-level international productions. The deal kicks off with the Lagos-set action-thriller “Son of the Soil,” directed by British Chinese filmmaker Chee Keong Cheung (“Redcon-1”), which Nile Entertainment will be releasing theatrically across Africa, as Variety previously announced.

“Son of the Soil” stars British Nigerian actor-writer Razaaq Adoti as a former Nigerian Special Ops paratrooper who returns home after the murder of his sister. When he finds his community overrun by a violent drug cartel, he sets off on an emotionally charged fight for justice and redemption.

Ridley Scott Hypes Post-Apocalyptic Movie as His Best Yet
Image
Ridley Scott teases his upcoming post-apocalyptic movie, revealing that it just might be the best of his long filmmaking career. Now 87 years old, Scott remains as active as ever as a director, releasing Gladiator 2 last year and movies like Napoleon (2023) and House of Gucci (2021) before that.

Over the last two decades, Scott has continued to release films regularly, and reception has varied. Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017), for example,...

Batman & Robin star Chris O’Donnell spent years portraying an NCIS special agent in NCIS: Los Angeles. However, what many might not know is that he also appeared as a CIA agent in the Cold War spy thriller miniseries, The Company. Aired on TNT in 2007, the three-part series is based on the novel by Robert Littell.

O’Donnell began appearing in NCIS: Los Angeles in 2009 and continued playing the main role of G. Callen until the show went off air in 2023. He had appeared in several movies and shows before this, and one of them was this spy thriller series, in which he played Jack McAuliffe, a Yale elitist turned post-Cold War jaded CIA agent.

Ridley Scott Passed On Directing A Major Sci-Fi Sequel (And A Huge Paycheck)
Image
Very few directors have had the longevity, success, or diversity in their careers that Ridley Scott has had. At 87 years old, the man behind "Blade Runner," "Alien," "Gladiator," and so many other classics is still just as active -- arguably more so -- than he was back in the 1980s. With such a long career come inevitable missed opportunities ... or, if you're Scott, opportunities you're still royally glad that you turned down. The one in question? "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines."

It's been known for years that Scott was one of many directors in consideration to direct the threequel after James Cameron removed himself from the project. But in...

17 Years Later, Ben Stiller Explains Why They Made the Controversial Comedy ‘Tropic Thunder’
Image
It’s been 17 years since Tropic Thunder first hit theaters, sparking both box office success and plenty of controversy that still lingers today. Directed by and starring Ben Stiller, the 2008 action-comedy skewered Hollywood excess, the self-importance of actors, and the making of war epics — with performances from Jack Black, Danny McBride, Tom Cruise, and most infamously, Robert Downey Jr. in blackface. With a script by Stiller, Justin Theroux, and Etan Cohen, Tropic Thunder grossed nearly $200 million worldwide and earned an 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes. But in a recent interview, Stiller opened up about the true inspiration behind the film — and why it resonated with him at the time.

Watch Ridley Scott’s Undersung 76% Rotten Tomatoes War Epic Before Netflix Removes It
Image
Ridley Scott has directed all manner of sci-fi and action projects over the years, but one of the more undersung projects from the acclaimed filmmaker just got a disappointing streaming update. 24 years ago, Scott directed Black Hawk Down, the 2001 war epic telling the story of the one hundred and sixty U.S. soldiers who were dropped into Mogadishu in 1993 to capture the two top lieutenants of a renegade warlord, only to find themselves in a battle against heavily-armed Somalis. Black Hawk Down has been streaming on Netflix for a few months now, but the streamer has confirmed that the last day to watch the film was August 1. The film earned strong scores of 76% from critics and 84% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $172 million against a $92 million budget.

5 Living Directors Who Are Actually Better Than Quentin Tarantino After His ‘Top 2’ Reveal
Image
Ahead of David Fincher and Brad Pitt‘s upcoming spin-off, The Adventures of Cliff Booth, Quentin Tarantino declared his support for the Fight Club director. In a lengthy 2-hour interview on The Church of Tarantino podcast, Qt revealed:

I think me and David Fincher are the 2 best directors. So the idea that he actually wants to adapt my work shows a level of seriousness towards my work.

The Adventures of Cliff Booth is set to be based on Brad Pitt’s Oscar-winning role in the 2019 film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Before this, there had never been a filmmaker or scriptwriter who boldly pursued a spin-off from Tarantino’s source material. As such, the news comes as a pleasant shock to both Fincher and Tarantino fanatics.

However, one can hardly agree with Tarantino on his proclamation of who the two best directors are in Hollywood. Let’s look at...

Ridley Scott's $173M War Epic Loses Its Streaming Home September 1 Will be a Sad Day for Taylor Sheridan Fans
Image
Ridley Scott directed multiple award-winning films, and the beginning of the 2000s was one of his highest points. One year after the extremely successful 2000 historical drama Gladiator, he directed the war epic Black Hawk Down.

The critically acclaimed war movie is now set to lose its streaming home, as What's on Netflix reports Black Hawk Down is set to leave Netflix on Sept. 1. The movie premiered in 2001 and has since become one of Scott's best movies. The film's story was also explored in a documentary on Netflix earlier this year.

Scott directed and produced Black Hawk Down with a script by Ken Nolan, with Jerry Bruckheimer as a co-producer. The war film is based on journalist Mark Bowden's non-fiction book of the same name from 1999, following the crew of a Black Hawk helicopter shot down during the Battle of Mogadishu in the early 1990s. Ioan Gruffudd Reflects On Third ‘Fantastic Four’ Movie That Never Got Made: “These Decisions Are Beyond My Control”
Image
Ioan Gruffudd, who notably portrayed Mister Fantastic/Reed Richards in 20th Century Fox’s Fantastic Four duology, reflected on the scrapped plans for a proposed third film that never came to be.

In a Q&a with Vulture tied to the release of Marvel’s new take on the storied comic book family, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the Welsh actor talked about feeling “incredibly proud to be part of such a beautiful franchise,” which comprised 2005’s Fantastic Four and 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

“The mindset was that we were going to do three, and I think the second movie was equally successful as the first and equally enjoyable for the fans,” said Gruffudd, who attended the world premiere of the MCU entry, which features Pedro Pascal in the main role. “I particularly loved working with Doug Jones [as the Silver Surfer] on that movie, who’s just a terrific...

Top 10 Free Games On Steam You Need to Play In August 2025
Image
Let’s be honest, gaming is just too expensive. We were already frustrated with the $70 price tag for Aaa titles, and then Nintendo came along and casually pushed that up to $80 like it was no big deal. If you’re someone who’s hoping that this trend is about to stop, then think again because word on the street is that even GTA 6 might launch at $80 or higher. At this point, our only hope to play such games is to pray to Lord Gaben for those Steam sales.

Lord Gaben’s Steam is loaded with some insanely good free-to-play games that won’t cost you a single dime. We’ve spent quite a lot of time playing each of them, and trust us,...

Untamed currently has a 79% score on Rotten Tomatoes and is led by veteran actors Eric Bana (Troy), Sam Neill (Jurassic Park), and Rosemarie DeWitt (Mad Men). The first season was released in its entirety on July 17, 2025.

As per Netflix Tudum, Untamed is at the top of Netflix's Global Top 10 Shows for the second week in a row. Netflix Renews Hit Crime Thriller 'Untamed' for Season 2

Despite initially being made and marketed as a limited series, Netflix has now renewed its new crime thriller show for a second season. While it was thought that the new series would be a one-and-done job, the huge success of the first season has clearly resulted in the streamer wanting more. And more it will get.

Released on the streamer earlier this month, Untamed introduces audiences to Eric Bana as Kyle Turner, a special agent for the National Park Service Investigative Services Branch (Isb) who works to enforce human law in nature’s vast wilderness. Suddenly, the investigation of a brutal death sends him down a path that will force him to face the dark secrets within the park, and in his own past. While the intention was for the series to last just the six episodes that are now available, the show has been at the top of the...

The Assessment (Fleur Fortune)

The “old world” is a wasteland. People still live there, but not for very long. Those in the “new world” live hundreds of years thanks to a drug that slows aging. It’s groundbreaking technology that comes at a price: the combination of scarce real estate on which to live safely and figurative immortality means less to go around for a populace that never decreases. The compromise was thus to take China’s now-defunct “one-child policy” to the nth degree and render the conception of all children illegal. Unless you’re granted a waiver by the government, but that permission is understandably not easily won. You must prove yourselves worthy as a couple via a seven-day evaluation. This...

Eric Bana on ‘Untamed,’ the Finale’s ‘Great…Twist’ and the Possibility of a Season 2
Image
Spoiler Alert: This interview contains major spoilers from “Untamed,” now streaming on Netflix.

Eric Bana wouldn’t mind a change of pace in his more than 30-year career.

Known for high-stakes drama and action movies such as “Black Hawk Down,” “Troy,” “Hulk” and “Munich,” most don’t know — or have forgotten — that the 56-year-old actor started in comedy.

Along with starring in the sketch comedy series “Full Frontal” in the mid-1990s in his native Australia, he also hosted a short-lived talk show, “The Eric Bana Show Live.”

“Most of what I get sent is quite dark and dramatic, and I’ve really enjoyed doing the lighter stuff when it comes along,” Bana tells me during an appearance on the “Just for Variety” podcast. “So it would be fun to do more lighthearted stuff for sure, but it doesn’t grow on trees on my desk. There’s a lot of darkness on my desk.

Well, Netflix may have gotten one step closer to doing just that, with the popular streamer's new crime thriller series, which has been likened to the gritty, sweeping drama of Yellowstone, as well as the same neo-western sensibilities demonstrated in the filmmaker’s underrated Wind River, which has now debuted with a killer Rotten Tomatoes score following the first reviews.

The series is titled Untamed and finds Hulk and The Dry star Eric Bana taking the lead in this character-driven mystery-thriller, which follows a special agent for the National Parks Service who works to enforce human law in nature’s vast wilderness. Suddenly, the investigation of a brutal death sends him down a path that will force him to face the dark secrets within the park, and in his own past.

The Steven Spielberg 94% War Epic That Launched a ‘Fast & Furious’ Star's Career Is Now on Streaming
Image
These days, it’s all about family for Vin Diesel. Since his appearance in the 2001 film, The Fast and the Furious, the actor has become synonymous with the franchise. But in the late ‘90s when the blossoming action star was trying to make a name for himself, he auditioned and was booked for one of the greatest war flicks of all-time — Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan. The movie is a legend in and of itself, filled with a stacked cast that also includes Tom Hanks and Matt Damon, but Diesel’s addition to it no doubt helped launch his career and put him on the crash course to step into the role of Dominic Toretto just a few years later. Now, more than 25 years since it first took the world (and global box office) by storm, Saving Private Ryan is enjoying a run on Prime Video.

In the world of cinema,...

The Sandlot Cast: Where The Actors Are Now
Image
For many kids growing up in the early 1990s, "The Sandlot" was one of the definitive sports movies. Set in 1960s Southern California, it revolves around a group of kids who gather to play baseball in an abandoned lot in their suburban neighborhood. But their light-hearted escapades turn chaotic when the newest member of their ranks accidentally offers up a priceless baseball autographed by Babe Ruth, not realizing its significance, which is promptly hit over the fence into a neighboring junkyard. To get it back, they'll have to tangle with the Beast, a (supposedly) bloodthirsty monster of a dog who (allegedly) eats burglars as though they were kibble.

Over the years since its release, "The Sandlot" has swung its way into the heart of pop culture, basking in the warm glow of '90s nostalgia and developing a reputation of one of the greatest baseball movies of all time. While...

Tom Hardy's Favorite War Movie Is Now Streaming For Free
Image
Tom Hardyis no stranger to war movies. In fact, that’s how the actor got his start. Back in 2001, the actor joined an insanely stacked call sheet alongside legends like Ewan McGregor and Josh Hartnett in Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down. Perhaps that’s part of the reason why, when he was asked about his favorite films, the actor responded with a classic war pic at the top of the list. According to Far Out, Hardy previously heralded Oliver Stone’s iconic Vietnam War-centered feature, Platoon, as his number one picture. Now, audiences can head to Prime Video to check out the film, as it finds itself streaming alongside the platform’s extended list of content.

During his interview, Hardy was sure to mention the near impossibility of picking a favorite flick, naming other filmmakers like Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, Gaspar Noé, and more as the best in the biz.

As ‘F1’ revs up, a look at Jerry Bruckheimer’s 8 best Oscar-nominated movies
Image
Jerry Bruckheimer, start your engines. The veteran producer's latest summer spectacle, F1: The Movie, races into theaters on Friday and is already expected to top the weekend box office courtesy of Brad Pitt's star power and the global popularity of the Formula 1 racing circuit.

Based on advanced looks, F1 also has the right stuff to appeal to Oscar voters — much like Bruckheimer's previous collaboration with director Joseph Kosinski, 2022's Top Gun: Maverick. That legacy sequel received six nominations, including Best Picture. That also happened to be Bruckheimer's first nod in a five-decade career.

"We got recognized for a terrific film and thanks to Tom Cruise, I'm here," the producer said at the time, adding: "I've been doing it for so long and haven't had the accolades from my peers. ... I finally got that which is kind of a completion for making movies for all these years."

While Top Gun: Maverick...

Stephen King Thinks This Clint Eastwood Movie Is One Of This Century's Best
Image
The New York Times recently ran a poll asking famous filmmakers, actors, and writers to name the best movies of the century so far. From Pedro Almodóvar to "West Side Story" and "Snow White" star Rachel Zegler, the Times asked dozens upon dozens of famous people about their favorite feature films released since the year 2000 and then compiled their responses into a Top 100 list (ranked by which movies got the most votes). The poll was very similar to the polls that Sight & Sound holds once every decade, only limited to releases from the last 25 years and inviting a different team of filmmakers, writers, and executives to participate. (Sight & Sound also invites critics and essayists.)

As of this writing, one can see many of the Top 10 lists submitted by the participants, and, boy howdy, are some of the choices interesting. Alex Winter, the star of the "Bill & Ted" films and director of "Freaked,...

Mel Brooks loves ‘Hidden Figures’?! Julianne Moore’s a ‘Superbad’ fan?! Stars reveal their most surprising Nyt movie picks
Image
When The New York Times recently dropped its list of the 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century, it didn’t just spark film buff debates — it also gave readers a peek into which movies actors, directors, and creatives listed as their favorites. And let’s just say, the results are full of surprises.

Who would’ve guessed that comedy legend Mel Brooks — the mind behind Blazing Saddles and The Producers — is a major fan of Hidden Figures? His top 10 also includes Jojo Rabbit, A Beautiful Mind and The Bourne Identity.

Then there’s horror king Stephen King, who proved he has a soft side with Brokeback Mountain on his list, alongside more intense films such as Black Hawk Down, Million Dollar Baby, and Oppenheimer.

When Oscar winner Julianne Moore needs a laugh, it appears she turns to comedies Superbad and The 40 Year-Old Virgin. Rounding out her list was also stylish dramas like Black Swan,...

Alex Garland’s 93% Rotten Tomatoes War Thriller Just Beat Denzel Washington’s $191 Million Action Sequel on Global Streaming Charts
Image
As it did when it debuted in theaters earlier this year, Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza's Warfare dropped on streaming with a bang. The war thriller, which sort of underperformed at the box office but earned excellent reviews, beat a Denzel Washington blockbuster in its first two days of release on Prime Video. Featuring an ensemble cast of young male stars, Warfare was based on a real-life incident experienced by Mendoza, who served in the Iraq War. The movie made a little over $30 million worldwide against a reported budget of $20 million.

According to FlixPatrol, Warfare was the fourth-biggest film on Prime Video on June 18, whereas Washington's The Equalizer 3 had to settle for the eighth spot. The Prime Video charts were topped by The Accountant 2, which recently debuted on streaming after grossing over $100 million worldwide. The number three spot was claimed by its predecessor, The Accountant, with...

Untamed: 3 Reasons Why This Netflix Murder Mystery Should Be On Your Watchlist
Image
Untamed (Photo Credit – Netflix)

Ott giant Netflix has an exciting slate of original films and shows lined up for release in the coming months. One such title quietly making its way to the streaming platform is the mystery thriller limited series Untamed. The series, which consists of six episodes, will premiere on Netflix on July 17, 2025. Here are three solid reasons why this show deserves a spot on your watchlist.

1. The Creators

The upcoming Netflix series has been created by Mark L. Smith and Elle Smith. For the unversed, Mark L. Smith is a screenwriter who has previously lent his writing skills to Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Oscar-winning film The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role.

He also created Netflix’s recent Western series, American Primeval, and his upcoming projects include Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi film The Dog Stars. With such an impressive filmography, streaming enthusiasts have every...

Hollywood Reporter Critics Pick the 10 Best Films of 2025 So Far
Image
Caught by the Tides

Jia Zhang-ke’s elegiac and poetic feature revolves around a woman (Zhao Tao) who journeys from her home in a fading industrial city in search of a vanished former boyfriend. The movie looks back on China’s recent history, but also on Jia’s filmography, echoing themes, geographical features, techniques and structural elements while incorporating footage shot at various intervals from 2001 through 2023 — an approach that gives it a kind of kinship with Richard Linklater’s Boyhood. — David Rooney

Ghost Trail

Centering on a Syrian exile tracking down his former torturer in France, Jonathan Millet’s film is a work of visceral intensity and formidable control. Millet has a shrewd grasp of paranoid-thriller mechanics; a refreshing preference for intimacy and clarity over distancing stylistic or narrative fussiness; and two fantastic actors: soulful, movie-star-magnetic lead Adam Bessa and Tawfeek Barhom as a villain whose humanity is the most chilling thing about him.

'Pirates of the Caribbean' Star Wants "The Gang" Back for New Movie
Image
Orlando Bloom, the star of Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven, and The Lord of the Rings universe, is trying to revive the flames of one of his most important franchises. In the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Bloom played Will Turner, the blacksmith's apprentice who falls in love with Elizabeth Swann amid the invasion of the ghostly pirates. While there have been rumors about the possible return of the franchise, nothing has been confirmed. As fans wait for news, Bloom adds fuel to the fire and says that he wants to get everyone back for a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

The Troy actor is likely referring to Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley, who played Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth Swann in the series. But who's to say we can't add Geoffrey Rush and Kevin McNally to the mix as well, given how important their characters were in the entire series?...

Why Ridley Scott's Kingdom Of Heaven Director's Cut Is The Best Version Of The Movie
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Ridley Scott was on fire creatively at the outset of the 21st century. After a rough 1990s that saw him stumble, at least commercially, with "1492: Conquest of Paradise," "White Squall," and "G.I. Jane," the world-building maestro bounced back in a big way with "Gladiator," "Hannibal," and "Black Hawk Down." Scott had always exhibited a chameleonic ease moving from genre to genre, but deftly segueing from a sword-and-sandals epic to a Grand Guignol romance to a concussive masterpiece of modern combat over the course of two years was an unparalleled feat, particularly while working on such a massive scale.

Scott, then in his mid-60s, appeared to be peaking. So when he failed to win the Best Director Oscar for both "Gladiator" and "Black Hawk Down" (despite the former winning Best Picture), it felt safe to assume that something even...

Read on to find out what he said.

Darkness Falls (2003) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
Mention Darkness Falls to your fellow horror fans, and you might get two very different reactions. One may scoff, dismissing it as yet another teen jump-scare fest with zero artistic merit. Another might enthusiastically high-five you and say, “I don’t care what anybody says, that movie rules!” The vast difference likely caused by a studio aiming to replicate The Blair Witch Project’s viral marketing success, while making a film more comparable to the modern popcorn horror of Blumhouse or the Conjuring Universe. This is the story of a film with enough lore to fill a novelization, a fake documentary, and a comic book prequel. Reduced to a film so short they had to make the ending credits last eleven minutes long just to be able to release theatrically; a studio that decided to entirely replace the design and appearance of its main villain in Post-production; and finally, this...

Josh Hartnett Subtly Shades Pearl Harbor While Hyping up Ridley Scott’s 2001 Film
Image
In the early 2000s, Josh Hartnett was everywhere. He was once one of Hollywood’s fastest-rising stars, coming into the spotlight with leading roles in big-budget movies and teen heartthrob status. But now, more than 20 years later, Harnett is reflecting, in a slightly critical look, at the movie that changed his life overnight.

The actor shared his experience on Pearl Harbor, a Michael Bay-directed war-romance movie that led him into a level of fame he wasn’t fully prepared for. And, Hartnett subtly but clearly draws a line between the glossy, romanticized vision of Pearl Harbor and the gritty realism of Black Hawk Down.
