A middle aged single Bala returns back after a few years in Singapore .
His sister Jayalalitha is depressed and sad . She has lost her husband and the burden of her house falls on her . Her first son is waylaid . The other three kids are toddlers.
Bala takes up the cudgel upon himself to redeem this family .
He drives to Ooty for a few days' solace . He meets Sumalatha - a lady guide .
She has her own poignant story .
Though hesitant at first she starts confiding in him. They become close thanx to their loneliness .
She tells him about her family , her pa had passed away , her grieving mother has turned to alcohol and they live with their autistic brother . Even the Christmas revelers bypass their house saying no joy or happiness lives in that house . Its always grey and dull .
After a few meetings, he leaves for back home with the promise of returning soon.
She is sad at this development more so because the town had started talking about them . She is the subject of many snide remarks and jeers. She takes everything in her stride .
Venu , their family friend keeps helping her family in distress .
Balu does return . They meet again and grow closer intimate . Despite her mother's misgivings she continues this relation .
She does not make any demands of marriage to Balu . Its implied between them that they understand each other.
Balu is wary of marrying her due to his own family problems and middle age . He comes to know that his sister Jayalalitha has taken over the family house slyly.
As he is now totally lonely , He finally decides to propose to Sumalatha .
He comes to Ooty . To his shock he comes to know that she has committed suicide.
Her life had become unbearable due to her mother passing away . Her autistic brother had run away .
The final scenes are poignant where he limps away from the crematorium ground to an uncertain future .
