Across Twelve Decades

Twelve decades have passed since the cameraman -- possibly Billy Bitzer, but unknown -- put his camera on a train and took a tracking shot of the Brooklyn Bridge, from the Manhattan station to the Brooklyn station. A lot has changed. For one thing, it would have been described as a panorama shot back them.

That would not be an issue. The cameraman knew how to do the shot back then and could do it today. Not so many people would be interested. It might be used as a brief introductory shot, but the thought that anyone would consider it a major part of a film program would astonish most denizens of 2019. Anyone could do this by pulling out a smart phone and hitting the video button. Heck, I could do it, and I'm inept.

So that's one thing that's changed: the technology and access to it.

On the other hand, they've shut down the L line for repairs, so Brooklyn is harder to get to. Maybe we aren't so smart.
