Angel Passing

Several years ago I attended an international festival of short films in Paris. Of the several films that were screened from the United States, I particularly enjoyed "Angel Passing". Stylistically the film seemed to resemble the work of the late Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski, in that there was a similar pacing, sparse dialogue, strong images and precise use of color. I also felt the film had a theme of a more spiritual, or almost metaphysical nature. The director was there, and he was asked to address the audience. Apparently Mr. Langlitz wears "two hats", that of a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York, as well as directing film on the side. One wonders if he has time to sleep. He spoke passionately about his desire to write and direct films based on strong characters, and a more humanist type of story. He felt Hollywood movies were relying more and more on CGI and special effects, to appeal to audiences. The cinematography in Angel Passing was excellent- the color and look of the opening of the film reminded me of the painting of Edward Hopper. An interesting side note- both the lead actors of "Angel Passing"- Hume Cronyn and Teresa Wright, had performed together in the 1942 Hitchcock film "Shadow of a Doubt". Also, the elegant French actor, Daniel Gelin, who had played in Hitchcock's 1955 "The Man Who Knew Too Much" was in the audience that night. I enjoyed the evening...

A beautiful film about forgiveness from a very talented director and writer. The director has an eye for detail and is able to communicate through subtle expression and emotion a sophisticated theme of redemption. The choice of music enhances the emotional pull of the subject matter. Hume Cronyn was superb in his touching portrayal of an elderly man facing the end of his life. Kudos to whoever the cinematographer was. He captured the spirit and largeness of NYC. The Chinese actress gave a fine and nuanced performance in her compassion for the old man. Overall, a very fine film. I would love to see more of the director and cinematographer's works. Where can I see more of their work?
