The Monsters

I recollect seeing this program when I was an 8 year old kid screened on BBC TV in black and white and from what little I can remember, it was pretty scary. I recollect in one episode one of the creatures looming up out of the loch ( lake ) close to the shore line in front of a couple of people. Needless to say that night I didn't sleep too soundly.

If as I have read is correct, no footage of this series still exists then it's a real shame as I would have liked to refresh my memory of the series.

Like others here I recall seeing this age 9 and having to hide behind the sofa, along with begging not to be sent to bed. Was it an early environmentalists subject ? The baddies were using a submarine chariot to dispose of toxic waste by sinking drums of the stuff into a deep lake (or loch, not sure where it was supposed to be). The monsters rebelled by clobbering it and killing the divers. At the end the monsters came out of the lake & demolished the control centre, the memory of monster claws piercing the window and Venetian blind is still very clear.

By the way the monsters came out of the water at the end I guess they filmed this by having a model monster & pulling it up on a slipway, so somebody must have had a lot of fun !

What a shame it's lost.

As with the previous reviewer, R C Smith, I was 8 years old when I saw this series in 1962. It left an impression on me at the time as being very chilling and realistic. It's rather sad that the series only lives in our memories as I would have liked to see it again. As R C Smith says, Dear BBC, please check your archives.
