The summer holiday is approaching, all the children are preparing for pioneer camps, except for one. Tutajos is basically a sensible guy, but he likes to daydream, and his mediocre grade in math puts his vacation in the countryside at risk. His teacher, knowing him, offers him a better grade and on the coming day he happily travels to his relatives with great expectation. His uncle is waiting for him at the train station, who entrusts him to the care of Uncle Matula, who is the son of nature.

It's only 4 a.m., but Matula wakes Tutajos to tell him it's time to leave for the marshland. His uncle advises the old man not to force the boy to do anything, let him learn from his own mistakes. Tutajos boldly embarks on everything he has already learned in the pioneer camp, but the reality is completely different. By the end of the day he wounds his legs and his skin gets sunburn.

Thanks to his aunt's magic ointment, Tutajos' sunburn heals quickly. Which is his luck, as Matula has to go to work with the cane cutters, and the boy is entrusted with catching their lunch. Of course, fishing doesn't work out as planned, but instead he learns from the old man how to catch crayfish, resulting in the best lunch of his life.

The hunt for the missed huge catfish begins, which Matula successfully captures, but the credit goes to Tutajos, who proudly accepts it. Since the fish is huge, Matula suggest that they should take it to his sister. On the way to her house they even have time to stop at a secret spot, where Tutajos have a chance to sneak peek the undisturbed wildlife. Since the boy really wants to shoot a bird of pray, the old man searches for his rifle and teach him how to use it.

It soon becomes clear that Tutajos is a master of the rifle after hunts several birds. He brings the rifle with him even to the train station where his long-time-not-seen friend, Bütyök arrives to stay with them for the coming weeks. His friend amazed when listening the stories of Tutajos and, frankly, he doesn't believe him, until they go to their first fishing trip together.

Tutajos and Bütyök awake for a beautiful, hot summer day. Since old Matula is busy in work, he sends the boys to explore the area by boat. The boys enjoy the warmth and tranquility, but out of nowhere a huge hailstorm emerges, and in the absence of warm clothes they barely escape. Matula needs to call a doctor who determines that Tutajos has pneumonia. His uncle has to write a letter to his parents to let them know.

It takes weeks for Tutajos to recover from his illness, so his uncle asks Bütyök to help him work on his fields as a scales-man. This makes him happy, since at home in bed he was dying of boredom and now he finally feels useful. He also get paid for his three weeks help and wins a girl's love. When Tutajos gets better, his uncle lets them go back to Matula's hut, from where they set off the next morning to discover a secret place, that locals call as Thorn Castle.

Summer is coming to an end, school starts in ten days, boys must return to civilized life. Matula is sad that he has to let them go, but he doesn't say goodbye, just see you next year. Tutajos' aunt fixes their clothes and calls a hairdresser, to make their appearance acceptable again. When they return to the city, they are hardly recognized. They left town as boys, but returned as men.
