Avis à la une
However when released in 1982, it failed to sparkle at the box office to much disappointment although surfaced as an average fair.
The songs are average except the holi-song - Dharam-hema Vinod Khanna-Ranjeeta as well as the beautiful solo brilliantly picturized on Dharmendra and sung by the irrepressible Mohammed Rafi.
Rajesh Khanna gives a good performance, Vinod Khanna is very okay especially in the climax where he seeks revenge. Hema malini is disappointing. Ranjeeta is as usual. The saving grace of the film is Dharmendra's delightful and earnest performance as Manu.
Watch it for Dharmendra's great portrayal as well as some laudable scenes, otherwise give it a miss.
However, they did movies together like Rajput & Dharm Aur Qanoon. Here, Rajesh makes his appearance nearly 50 minutes after the movie has started. He & Dharam share screen space while Vinod does not have much to do.
Rajesh Khanna proves once again that he can hold his own against other big stars. The reactions he gives when his wife tells him that she loves someone else & is pregnant, are excellent. The climax has a slight twist when he tells his "son" to light the funeral pyre of Dharmendra who is the actual father, is touching.
The director Vijay "Goldie" Anand has made a fairly entertaining movie, but it could have done with better editing & music. LP disappoint with their music & the length of the movie at 3 hours, is tiring at times.
Dharmendra also gives a good performance but he is overshadowed by Rajesh.
Amitabh mentioned in an interview that he was approached for this film but things did not work out.
The film had average run at the box office.
The film has a very good script written, and is not your run-of-the-mill revenge drama. Performances are excellent and the story keeps you watching. I'm sure this was a huge family entertainer during its day keeping theaters occupied through its nearly 3 hour run.
And that - the length of the movie - is the only factor that a movie critic of today will lament upon. Too many dragged scenes if could have been edited more, the film would have definitely got much better ratings on IMDB I believe. I guess the length was to do justice to the huge starcast, which it amply does.
I would recommend Hindi action and drama film lovers to watch this one.

- AnecdotesThe relationship between Vijay Anand and Vinod Khanna was very strained during the making of the film. Vijay Anand decided to leave Rajneesh because he felt Rajneesh had become too greedy and now was calling himself "Bhagwan". He was simply targeting foreigners for their money . Vijay followed Rajneesh for 10 years. The first crack appeared in 1972 when Kalyanji and actor Mahipal left Rajneesh. Vijay Anand decided to renounce his association with him in 1976. Vijay felt it was wrong for Rajneesh to speak ill of philosophers like U.G. Krishnamurthy. Vijay Anand went on to add that Rajneesh's policy was to leave your shoes and brains at the door . Rajneesh did not care about loosing a disciple like Vijay Anand. Rajneesh feared that with Vijay Anand now leaving him, it would lead to a mass exodus in the ashram. A Bombay film star was now leaving Rajneesh. His credibility would be in question. Exactly 7 days after Vijay Anand left Rajneesh, Vinod Khanna was summoned to the Pune ashram. Vinod Khanna was closeted up for 10 hours with Rajneesh, then immediately took a flight back to Bombay. It was here that Vinod Khanna announced his retirement from films. This was done in a press conference. Rajneesh had seeked Vinod Khanna's help fearing Vijay Anand's denouncement of Rajneesh would affect his following. With Vinod Khanna standing tall and supporting Rajneesh, his credibility would remain in tact.
