The Raccoons and The Muppet Babies are the two best cartoon shows of the '80s, and there were a lot of great cartoons back then! I love this show because it's not some 30-minute toy commercial; it's a quality cartoon with great characters, great songs, and great plots. Like any fan of this show, I love Bert. He's just so courageous and his antics always give me a laugh. Cyril Sneer may come off selfish and mean, but he's really a very nice guy, especially with his son Cedric. And the songs in this show are some of the best songs ever made for a cartoon; they always fit in nicely with the plot and had that classic new wave sound to it (something that The Muppet Babies also have).
So, if you can find it, give this show a good watch. You'll love it!

Many people today when they see this show say - "AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHGHHHHHHH! HAPPY CUTE RACCOONS! TURN IT OFF, TURN IT OFF" Well, let me tell you, the Raccoons are way more then just bunch of goofy animals whose sole purpose was to sell toys. The characters are very well described. Particularly Bert who was in the first 3 movies just a comic relief character without some big purpose, and now he's the star character, while the original main characters, Ralph and Melisa gone into shadow. I'm only disappointed with Cyril Sneer who was a great villain at the beginning, and throughout the show, they gave him "Ebenezer Scrooge Treatment" and eventually he became good. I liked him way more as a bad guy. I also think that the later episodes were not so great as the old ones. The cartoon had transformation from a story of Raccoons as rebels who fought Sneer the evil tyrant, to an entire city made out of forest animals with not very mature and funny stories like it had at the beginning. I liked it more at the beginning. But even with lack of quality through time, this is very great cartoon which totally describes the expression - family TV. The other thing I just have to mention is great music and especially the main themes (the opening one, and "Run With Us" song at the end). If you like classic cartoons, this is for you! Watch it, believe me, you won't disappointed!
This was a pretty cool cartoon. It was a little on the enviro side but it was still cool. And you gotta love the theme song. And Cyrial Sneer makes me laugh my ass off! I can't wait to see the other half of the show that I hear about, where they finally win over Cyrial. That would be a sight to see. My favorite character of course is Bert. He's so much more full of adventure than the rest of the characters and is the one that usually ultimately saves the day. So if you want to see some cool Canadian cartoons. Look for this one if you can.
I am 25, and live very near Canada. I remember watching this show via a Canadian station probably twelve or thirteen years ago. I loved it. It was right up there with Ducktales, Gargoyles, Aladdin, Dinosaurs, Gummi Bears and Ren and Stimpy (when Ren and Stimpy first aired, I was too young to understand most of the adult humor it had, so my father and I both enjoyed the series, but for different reasons). These were true classics, unlike most of today's cartoons (although I must admit, I enjoy most episodes of Spongebob Squarepants). Hopefully I will soon be having a child of my own, and be able to introduce them into a world of television that includes I Love Lucy, The Honeymooners, Ducktales, The Raccoons, Ren and Stimpy, You Can't Do That on Television and Spongebob Squarepants.
First of all, I must say that I love this show. I have since I was 3, and I always will. Being born in 1992, I got to see the best of late 1980s television, and this just happened to be one of those shows. My mother says that I rarely watched The Raccoons, but I can very well recall seeing many episodes. "The Evergreen Grandprix" and "Blast From The Past" come to mind.
Another thing I really like about the show is the fact that they made their own music and songs. 98% of all episodes featured a very well done musical number. The theme song is very good as well, having an original sound.
The Raccoons was the first TV series produced entirely with in Canada, and managed a successful six year run from 1985 to 1991. All Canadians should be proud! I sure am!
The last time I managed to see The Raccoons on national television would have been in July, 2002, around 7:30am or so on APTN. Since then, I haven't seen it anywhere since then. I now own both DVD box sets, and they were both worthy investments. Recommended!
