Why Pedro Pascal Left Zach Cregger's Weapons
Image
One would be hard-pressed to find a busier man in Hollywood than Pedro Pascal these days. The star of "The Mandalorian" and "Gladiator II" has been an ever-present force in both movies and TV over the last several years. That's a big reason why Warner Bros. and director Zach Cregger tapped him to topline the cast for the filmmaker's latest movie "Weapons," a follow-up to his 2022 breakout feature debut "Barbarian." Unfortunately, Pascal had to drop out of the movie before production began. But why?

In a recent interview with Variety, Cregger addressed Pascal's departure from "Weapons," revealing that the months-long 2023 Screen Actors Guild strike was to blame. "I had a whole different cast for this movie. And then we had the strike, and then Pedro Pascal's schedule threw us into turmoil. I had to recast the entire movie," the director said. Indeed, it wasn't just losing one cast member. Apparently,...

Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez in Resident Evil (2002)
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil is “love letter to the game”, won’t feature Leon
Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez in Resident Evil (2002)
It’s hard to get excited about any Resident Evil movie considering they have all pretty much sucked. But with Barbarian and Weapons director Zach Cregger signed on to direct his own version of Resident Evil, we can officially be excited. Well, unless you don’t agree with his approach…

Zach Cregger recently spoke to Inverse about his forthcoming Resident Evil movie, where he once again reiterated that he is taking the world in the direction he wants to. Clearly aware how some of the more die-hard fans might take this, he defended himself by saying, “Let me say this: this is not breaking the rules of the games. I am the biggest worshiper of the games, so I’m telling a story that is a love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games.”

So what exactly does that mean? For one, don’t expect to see the beloved Leon S.

Zach Cregger Says His Resident Evil Will Be a New Story Inside the Games’ World
Zach Cregger
Zach Cregger says his upcoming “Resident Evil” will tell an original story within the games’ universe rather than retread a familiar campaign, describing his approach as “obedient to the lore” but “a different story.” In comments published this week, he added that signature characters like Leon S. Kennedy won’t be the focus because “their stories are told in the games,” and emphasized he wants to translate the series’ methodical, dread-driven pacing to film.

The project, set for theatrical release on September 18, 2026, is being written by Cregger with Shay Hatten and is backed by Sony/Columbia alongside longtime franchise producer Constantin Film. Recent interviews outline a survival-horror tone rooted in the games’ rhythms rather than a beat-by-beat adaptation.

Production appears to be gearing up in Central Europe. Local filings show the untitled feature was registered to shoot in the Czech Republic, indicating Prague as a likely base. Industry tracking has...

Zach Cregger Explains His ‘Resident Evil’ Is “A Different Story” But “A Love Letter To The Games”
Image
As Zach Cregger prepares to bring Resident Evil to the big screen once again, he’s venturing outside the canon for a new story.

The director, who is rebooting the franchise for Sony, recently explained that although he’s “not breaking the rules of the games,” the movie depicts a story “outside of the characters of the games.”

“I am the biggest worshiper of the games, so I’m telling a story that is a love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games,” he told Inverse.

“It is obedient to the lore of the games, it’s just a different story,” added Cregger. “I’m not going to tell Leon’s story, because Leon’s story is told in the games. [Fans] already have that.”

At CinemaCon in March, Cregger echoed teased that his adaptation is “built in the spirit of those games and follows one central...

Zach Cregger Says His ‘Resident Evil’ Movie Exists ‘Outside’ of the Original Characters Because Fans ‘Already Have That’ With the Games: ‘I’m Not Going to Tell Leon’s Story’
Image
Zach Cregger remains adamant about not remaking any story within the “Resident Evil” saga for his big-screen adaptation.

Although he wants to have an original plot, the “Weapons” director told Inverse that he’s “not breaking the rules of the games.”

He continued, “I am the biggest worshiper of the games, so I’m telling a story that is a love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games.”

Cregger will direct the movie based on the hugely popular horror video game franchise. He has written the script alongside his co-writer, Shay Hatten. Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the film.

Constantin’s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon and PlayStation Productions are also producing.

Cregger is set on creating a project that is “outside of the characters of the games,” but he reassured fans that the game’s roots will be respected.

Resident Evil Director Zach Cregger Reveals If Leon or Jill Valentine Will Appear in New Movie: “Fans Already Have That”
Image
With Zach Cregger, known for directing films like Barbarian and Weapons, taking the helm of the new Resident Evil movie, expectations were high that he might deliver a no-nonsense Resident Evil story.

His previous work shows a clear love for horror and suspense, which made people think he’d bring the games’ story back to its roots. But it turns out Cregger has a different plan for the film.

In an interview with Inverse, Cregger made it clear that while he’s a huge fan of the games, his movie won’t focus on the well-known characters like Leon S. Kennedy or Jill Valentine. Instead, he’s creating a new story set in the Resident Evil world but separate from the main game narratives.

He said, “Let me say this: this is not breaking the rules of the games. I am the biggest worshiper of the games, so I’m...

Upcoming ‘Resident Evil’ Film Director Shocks Fans By Revealing Major Game Character Won’t Appear: “Fans Already Have That”
Image
Fans hoping for a straightforward, no-nonsense Resident Evil movie might be in for a surprise. Zach Cregger, the director known for Barbarian and most recently, Weapons, is taking on the new live-action Resident Evil film. While many thought Cregger would deliver a faithful adaptation of the classic survival horror games, it turns out his approach will be a bit different.

Cregger told Inverse that although he’s a huge fan of the games, his film will tell “a different story” set in the Resident Evil universe. He explained, “Let me say this: this is not breaking the rules of the games. I am the biggest worshiper of the games, so I’m telling a story that is a love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games.”

Zach Cregger Teases Weapons Follow Up as David Fincher’s Advice Comes to Light
Zach Cregger
Zach Cregger says he has a fresh idea set in the world of his new film Weapons, but any follow-up would wait while he turns to a planned Resident Evil feature. In a new interview, the filmmaker also revealed that David Fincher quietly advised him on Weapons, a contribution acknowledged in the end credits.

Cregger said Fincher “was available to me during prep, and then he was very available during the post process,” describing the veteran director’s input as practical guidance rather than creative oversight. Cregger added that he does have another story in mind for a potential return to the setting of Weapons, though he does not expect to tackle it immediately.

The update arrives as Weapons expands in theaters following its August rollout. The multi-perspective horror drama tracks the aftermath of a small-town crisis and was written during a period of personal grief for Cregger, a theme...

Zach Cregger Breaks Silence on Weapons Sequel After Barbarian Connection: “I can’t help it”
Image
Zach Cregger has plans for a sequel after Weapons‘ success, and talks about the Barbarian connection, and we are all in for it. The director has stated that he plans to make a sequel set in the same world as that of Barbarian and Weapons, but he will take some time to work on it.

In an interview with Variety, Zach Cregger was asked about his future plans post Weapons‘ success. Although Cregger cannot work on that movie now (because he has a ton of other projects), the director claimed that he’d love to see the movie on the big screens one day.

I can’t help it: I have another idea for something in this world that I’m kind of excited about.

He continued,

Henchmen: Zach Cregger's DC Script Confirmed To Feature Joker, Harley Quinn - And Possibly Batman
Image
Weapons director Zach Cregger has confirmed that he has a finished script for a DC-based project ready to go, but he hasn't actually pitched it to DC Studios yet.

While appearing on Bloody Disgusting's podcast back in 2022, Cregger spoke about his "Batman- adjacent" script for the first time, revealing that he would love the opportunity to bring it to the screen.

"The thing I'd love to do next... I've actually written a movie that takes place in the DC Universe. Which is so not normally my thing; I'm not a superhero guy - I just couldn't stop thinking about this one story that kind of takes place in a Batman-adjacent thing. And so I wrote it, and I'm utterly obsessed with it."

Cregger didn't share any specifics on his story at the time, but during a more recent interview with Discussing Film, he described the script as the "best thing I've ever written,...

Weapons Zach Cregger has a DC project he wants to pitch that includes Joker and Harley Quinn
Zach Cregger
With Weapons already earning rave reviews, Zach Cregger has proven that he’s a director to watch out for, and he may be making the leap to the DC Universe. According to THR, the writer/director has a potential DC project called Henchman, which he has previously described as “my favourite thing I ever wrote.“

According to sources, the project centers on a “low-level henchman in the Gotham crime world who gains notoriety after managing to incapacitate Batman through a stroke of luck.” The Dark Knight could briefly appear in the film, with the Joker and Harley Quinn also set to play a part. Cregger hasn’t pitched it to DC Studios yet, but they’re said to be aware of the project.

“I have Resident Evil, and then I have a sci-fi movie right after that that’s original,” Cregger said of his upcoming projects. “And then I have...

‘Weapons’: Could next year’s Oscars be horror’s breakthrough moment?
Image
The most important issue first: There are no spoilers for Weapons in this article.

That needs to be clarified because Weapons is the new film from writer-director Zach Cregger, whose previous movie, Barbarian, was one of the most messed-up surprises (compliment) to hit theaters in years.

And Weapons, with very strong reviews and a great start at the box office, seems poised to build off of the promise shown by Barbarian, cementing Cregger as one of the most exciting filmmakers working today in horror—or any genre.

But will the Academy notice?

Does it even matter? Considering that a successful horror movie is probably more likely to shore up a filmmaker's career than an Oscar nomination (and that Cregger already has a new Resident Evil movie lined up as a potential next project), validation from the Oscars isn't a top priority for Weapons.

But in the interest of ever broadening...

Weapons Director Zach Cregger On How Personal Tragedy And Magnolia Inspired His Wild New Horror Movie [Exclusive Interview]
Image
Zach Cregger started his entertainment career in the world of comedy as part of the Whitest Kids U' Know troupe. But in 2022, Cregger jumped from humor to horror with "Barbarian," a buzzworthy flick that wowed genre fans with a series of jaw-dropping twists and turns no one saw coming. The film made Cregger a hot name in horror, and after producing this year's excellent "Companion," Cregger is back in the director's chair with "Weapons."

Like "Barbarian," Cregger has once again crafted a film where the element of surprise is key (you can read my spoiler-free review right here). The fantastic marketing for the film sets up the basic premise: One night at 2:17 Am, a group of kids from the same small town elementary school class mysteriously leave their house, run into the darkness of their suburban neighborhood, and seemingly vanish without a trace. The town is understandably spooked by...

Patch 7.3 has been released for Final Fantasy 14, and as fans play through the new story content, several are realizing that there are new elements that positively remind them of the Resident Evil games. Patch 7.3 added a new alliance raid, a new PvP series, a new trial, a new dungeon, and, of course, new story content that will end the Dawntrail story arc. Those story quests have some new Re-style design choices, and fans seem to love them.

In a Reddit thread by Avuilan, the user praises the new story quests for implementing puzzles, writing, "7.3 puzzles rocked my world," and several commenters note that those puzzles feel like old-school Re riddles. VoxAurumque wrote: "... that whole segment was cute. Very old Resident Evil."

Weapons director Zach Cregger confirms he had to recast the movie after the 2023 SAG strike
Georgina Campbell in Barbare (2022)
Barbarian (watch it Here) writer/director Zach Cregger has assembled a strong cast for his mysterious horror project called Weapons, including Julia Garner (Ozark), Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo), Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange), Amy Madigan (Antlers), Austin Abrams (Euphoria), June Diane Raphael (Grace and Frankie), and Cary Christopher (Days of Our Lives)… and we’re going to have the chance to see that cast face the horrors Cregger has conjured up when Weapons reaches theatres on August 8th. But that’s not the first cast this movie had. Back in May of 2023, it was announced that Pedro Pascal (The Fantastic Four: First Steps) would be starring in the film alongside Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World). Then, the Screen Actors Guild strike hit in July and lasted until November, and when it ended, scheduling issues forced Cregger to recast the movie.

‘Weapons’ Review: Josh Brolin & Julia Garner Lead Brilliant Ensemble In Zach Cregger’s Awesome And Creepy New Horror Mystery
Image
So the poster for the new horror film Weapons shows a bunch of kids running down a suburban street with the ad line saying: “Last night at 2:17 am every child from Mrs. Gandy’s class woke up, got out of bed, went downstairs, opened the front door, walked into the dark … and they never came back.”

Immediately I start thinking, “Yeah, a Children of the Corn or Children of the Damned kind of riff.” But look closer at the credits and the writer-director is none other than Zach Cregger, whose debut feature film Barbarian was one of the most impressive first films, as well as horror genre entries, I had seen in years. There was just something so unique and compelling about its “house of horrors” concept that grabbed me instantly, and I have been talking about it ever since its 2022 debut, and anxiously awaiting whatever Cregger had in store for us next.

Heartworm Review: A Picture-Perfect Nightmare
Image
Heartworm presents itself as a creation from a lost era of gaming, faithfully resurrecting the style of 90s survival horror. This is a psychological thriller built on a foundation of fixed camera angles and methodical exploration.

You play as Sam, a young woman struggling with the recent death of her grandfather. Her grief leads her down an internet rabbit hole to whispers of a secluded house, a place that supposedly bridges the gap between the living and the dead. Driven by a desperate hope for connection, she enters the strange home, only to find herself pulled into a surreal world warped by memory and sorrow.

The game immediately establishes a heavy, melancholic tone, focusing on a creeping sense of dread rather than startling scares. It invites the player into a personal story of loss, set against a backdrop of decaying reality and otherworldly threats.

Mapping the Mind

The game’s...

Spoiler Alert !!!This article contains some of the spoilers from Dandadan Season 2 Episode 5.

Okay, hear me out. I need to scream about Dandadan for a moment because Season 2, Episode 5 is complete and utter chaos! Controlled chaos, emotional chaos, romantic chaos, and then Bam! Full-blown spiritual soy sauce apocalypse. I don’t even know where to start.

So in this episode of Dandadan, the team: Seiko, Manjiro, Momo, Okarun, Mr. Mantis Shrimp, Chiquitita, and the whole damn team, is all standing around trying to spiritually yeet the Evil Eye off Jiji.

Today marks the launch of the PlayStation-inspired survival horror game Heartworm! If you have fond memories of blistering your thumbs playing titles like Resident Evil or Silent Hill, this game was made with you in mind.

Developer Vincent Adinolfi conceived the game as an homage to classic horror survival games, and he’s even tweaked the aesthetic to match the output of the era by which the game is heavily inspired. Heartworm uses pixelation filters to recreate the boxy aesthetic of retro games and even features an inventory screen designed to invoke nostalgia for that bygone era.

The game tasks players with several different objectives, including solving puzzles and engaging in combat. Don’t expect an easy go of it,...

‘Screaming and Conjuring’ Exclusive Excerpt Recalls Fan Fury Over James Gunn Remaking ‘Dawn of the Dead’
Image
Earlier this week we shared a sneak peek at the upcoming book Screaming and Conjuring from author Clark Collis that put the spotlight on James Gunn’s horror comedy Slither, and we’re back with another Gunn-themed excerpt from the must-read horror book.

This particular exclusive excerpt is all about James Gunn and Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead, the 2004 remake of the George A. Romero masterpiece that Gunn scripted and Snyder directed. Yes, two filmmakers who would go on to bring very different depictions of Superman to the big screen got their start working together on a classic horror remake!

While Dawn of the Dead is fondly remembered as one of the best remakes from that particular period of time, the initial response to the project wasn’t exactly kind. In fact, James Gunn – who had previously written the Scooby-Doo movie at the time – even received death threats.

Aaron Sorkin's 'Social Network' Sequel Eyeing Mikey Madison & Jeremy Allen White
Image
The Social Networkis getting a long-awaited sequel, but no, it won't feature Jesse Eisenberg as the controversial founder of Facebook. A pair of rising actors are being eyed to play two entirely new roles in the follow-up film, which will follow the more recent (and destructive) impact of the popular social media platform.

Deadline reports that Oscar-winner Mikey Madison (Anora) and Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) are the top choices to lead The Social Network Part II. Aaron Sorkin, who is writing and directing the film, is basing the sequel on The Facebook Files by Jeff Horowitz for The Wall Street Journal. If deals are made with the actors, White would play Horowitz, while Madison would be in line to play the whistleblower behind the articles that exposed Facebook's questionable internal strategy and lack of care for the harmful effects of their platform.

Madison has been selective since receiving a...

Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez in Resident Evil (2002)
The #1 Horror Movie on Netflix Is Polarizing Fans Who Say its “Way better than its given credit for”
Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez in Resident Evil (2002)
Video game adaptations are often dicey. Though the Resident Evil films have their fans, they aren’t faithful adaptations of the games on which they are based. The same is true for Silent Hill. And that’s to say nothing about House of the Dead, which is easily one of the most maligned horror movies ever made.

Much of this probably comes down to the difference between the formats. With a video game, the audience in control. With a feature film, they are along for the ride. That core distinction, among others, means that adapting a game for the screen requires key changes to the setup.

Polarizing video game adaptation Until Dawn makes plenty of changes to the game on which it is based, and that’s likely one reason the flick has proved somewhat divisive thus far.

The setup of this adaptation goes like this:

One year after her sister disappeared,...

"Better Untouched Than Done Cheap": Legendary Horror Game Follow-Up Gets Canceled Over Funding
Image
Legendary modern horror masterpiece, Dead Space, had a follow-up horror game in development by its original creator and his daughter, but that project has officially been canceled. Dead Space previously got a different successor called The Callisto Protocol, which was a critical and financial disappointment, partly leading to the lay-off of the majority of Striking Distance Studios' development team, and it now looks like the series just can't get the audience appeal it needs.

According to Dead Space and The Callisto Protocol creator Glen Schofield on LinkedIn, over the past eight months, he and his daughter were working on a new game that he described as a new sub-genre of horror, but that project has beencanceled due to a lack of funding. Schofield decided to step away from the project after he was asked repeatedly to reduce the budget of the game, with him writing: "Some ideas are better left untouched than done cheap.

Image
Zack Cregger, the director of the 2022 horror gem Barbarian, has signed on as the filmmaker in charge of the upcoming Resident Evil franchise reboot. The video game series owned by Capcom has been adapted for the big screen before, but Sony Pictures has now acquired the rights, and they intend to fully reset the film series. Though not much is currently known about it, the film already has a release date. The new Resident Evil will arrive in theaters on September 18, 2026, and Cregger is already hyping up the movie, saying that it will "rip."

Per a recent report by Deadline, Cregger talked to Comic Book about the new Resident Evil. The director is currently promoting his latest feature, the mysterious horror film Weapons, which has already been declared one of the year's scariest releases. Resident Alien Creator & Stars React To The Show’s Cancellation: “We Sort Of Saw It Coming”
Image
After Resident Alien was officially canceled, its creator and stars are speaking out about the ending. Having premiered in 2021, the show is an adaptation of Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse's comic series. It stars Alan Tudyk as alien invader Harry Vanderspeigle, Sara Tomko as Asta Twelvetrees, Alice Wetterlund as D'arcy Bloom, and more.

Unfortunately, while the Syfy show managed to earn incredible reviews from critics, it never captured widespread audience attention. NBCUniversal repeatedly considered ending the show and eventually pulled the plug on July 25, meaning that Harry's malicious mission is coming to an abrupt end. Fortunately, the cast and crew planned ahead.

Creator Chris Sheridan and star Sara Tomko (Asta Twelvetrees) spoke with ScreenRant in an interview at San Diego Comic-Con and discussed the cancellation. Sheridan explained that the cast and crew were "prepared for this", even if Tomko believes that it is "surreal to work on something for...

Resident Evil 9 Has Reportedly Smashed Two Franchise Records
Image
Resident Evil Requiemisn't releasing until 2026, but a leaker suggests that it's already set two major franchise records during development. As the highly anticipated follow-up to 2021's Resident Evil 8, Requiem is set to return to the classic series location of Raccoon City. While the trailer revealed a new protagonist named Grace Ashcroft, daughter of Resident Evil Outbreak character Alyssa Ashcroft, many of the game's surprises are seemingly still being kept under wraps.

According to Resident Evil leaker AestheticGamer aka Dusk Golem on X, Resident Evil Requiem is allegedly the Re game with the longest development and the biggest budget "By Far." This isn't the first time Dusk Golem has mentioned the scale of its production, but claiming that the runner-ups aren't even close paints a particularly ambitious picture.

Image
Amazon Prime Video has announced that Wolfenstein, a series of alternate history World War II first-person shooter video games widely loved for its cathartic storytelling, is finally getting a chance to shine on screen. Well, the small screen, that is.

According to Variety, a Wolfenstein series is officially in development at Amazon, and it couldn't have a more perfect logline: “The story of killing Nazis is evergreen.” While exact plot details are currently being kept under wraps, fans of the games (currently developed by MachineGames and published by Bethesda Softworks) can clearly expect a bunch of dead bad guys. Patrick Somerville is reportedly attached to serve as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the exciting project under his chaoticgood.tv production banner, with MachineGames exec Jerk Gustafsson of Wolfenstein also on board as executive producer.

This isn't the first time a studio has tried bringing Wolfenstein to cinematic life.

Avid gamers and anime fans might be familiar with an old but beloved game known as Lollipop Chainsaw. This bizarre but enjoyable series became a staple of zombie games in the early 2010s, with a unique story and endearing characters that are still remembered fondly to this day. After more than 10 years, the franchise is ready to make a comeback.

However, besides a new game being developed, Lollipop Chainsaw has also announced that it will be releasing an anime adaptation of the original game. Viewers will be able to join Juliet once again as she defeats the zombies that are terrorizing her school. If the anime is anything like the game, this could be a crude but entertaining experience.

Milla Jovovich in Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)
Capcom Has Remade ‘Resident Evil 2’ for Arcades With ‘Resident Evil 2: Dead Shot’
Milla Jovovich in Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)
Capcom has remade Resident Evil 2 again. Only this time, they’ve enlisted the help of Bandai Namco for a lightgun arcade shooter. Per IGN, Resident Evil 2: Dead Shot is an on-rails shooter that’s currently in location testing at Namco Funscape in London, UK.

As one would expect with this type of arcade title, Dead Shot splits up the story for Resident Evil 2 into five episodes. However, the location testing cabinet only has the first two episodes were unlocked. The first chapter serves as the prologue, introducing players into the game, and sees Leon and Claire fighting past zombie cops and dogs to make their way into the Raccoon City Police Department.

As one would expect, the graphics are very much in line with the 2019 remake, but with the guidance you’d expect from an on-rails shooter like The House of the Dead. And like Hotd, (or...

Zach Cregger, writer/director of Barbarian (watch it Here) and the upcoming film Weapons, which is scheduled to reach theatres on August 8th, is set to direct a new Resident Evil movie for Sony, aiming for a September 18, 2026 theatrical release. We’ve previously heard that Cregger is writing the screenplay with Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead) and the story apparently harkens back to the original Capcom game’s horror roots. The story is rumored to center on a down-on-his-luck courier who’s tasked with delivering a package to a remote hospital. En route, he finds himself caught in the middle of a viral apocalypse and forced to fight hordes of mutated creatures.

Resident Evil Reboot Director Makes a Shocking Admission About the Previous Movies
Image
A new Resident Evil movie is in the works with Barbarian helmer Zach Cregger set to direct. As previous film adaptations have been polarizing, there may be some trepidation with the new film, but Cregger is aiming to satisfy other fans of the games.

Cregger commented on Resident Evil in a new interview with ComicBook. He stressed that he's a big fan of the video games, particularly Resident Evil 4, which recently had a remake released. Cregger added that his goal with the new film is to tell a story that honors the Resident Evil experience, replicating the same vibe of the source material.
