As always, Steam has a ton of sales going out each day, over a wide selection of genres, ranging from strategy sims to action-adventure titles, and even RPGs. Today’s selection of deals is, interestingly enough, focused on either horror or action.
As skimming through the entire list can be quite a daunting task, we will be providing 5 of the best deals you can grab as of August 18, 2025 – and perhaps for even longer, if we take into account the end dates of the sale.

It’s become an annual tradition: During the dog days of August, right between the last major release of the summer movie season and the start of the fall festival onslaught that kicks off at the end of the month, IndieWire devotes an entire week to celebrating a previous decade of film. We launched with ’90s Week in 2022, ticked back in time with ’80s Week the following year, and naturally did the obvious thing the year after that by… jumping forward to focus on the aughts.
The ’70s just seemed too vast — too robust — to contain within a few short days of lists, essays, interviews, and the like. Which isn’t to say that our previous theme weeks offered a comprehensive overview of their respective decades, or even intended to, but it always felt like we could see enough of the whole picture through the various pinholes we chose to use.

The first already-canceled show I fell for, even before "Firefly," was the CW's comedy "Reaper." While "Firefly" received a belated movie wrap-up in 2005 with "Serenity," the story of "Reaper" has remained open since its 2009 cancellation. Perhaps the show invited its own grim fate with a name that suggested death.
What is "Reaper," anyway, though? Well, I don't bring up "Firefly" out of nowhere; if you're a fan of Joss Whedon's writing, then "Reaper" might be up your alley too. The show is best described as "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" crossed with Kevin Smith, from "Clerks" to "Dogma." (Smith even directed the "Reaper" pilot.)
Created by Michele Fazekas & Tara Butters, "Reaper" follows 21-year-old slacker Sam Oliver (Bret Harrison). On his birthday, he gets a very unpleasant gift. Before Sam was born, his father John (Andrew Airlie) was "very sick," so Sam's parents made a deal with the Devil (Ray Wise) for a cure.

Everyone knows the story of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck's lifelong friendship; how they broke into Hollywood together by writing and starring in "Good Will Hunting," winning an Oscar and establishing themselves as two of the most significant forces in the industry for decades to come. That's the short version, anyway. The slightly longer version begins with the boys growing up together in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where they lived just two blocks apart and attended the same school. After high school, Damon enrolled in Harvard, where he wrote the beginnings of "Good Will Hunting" before dropping out and traveling to live with his buddy, Affleck, out in Los Angeles.
During that pre-"Good Will Hunting" period, both actors found work in multiple projects, with Damon appearing in a forgotten 1994 Western that marked Tommy Lee Jones' directorial debut and Affleck landing a role in the Danielle Steel TV movie adaptation, "Daddy.

Danny Boyle is one of the greatest filmmakers currently working. He is known for renowned works like “28 Days Later” (2002), “Trainspotting” (1996), “127 Hours” (2010), and “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008). Boyle is one of those filmmakers who has created and adapted a style so distinctive that every time we see something similar in another film, it immediately reminds us of him. His signature often includes documentary-like, shaky handheld camerawork. Boyle frequently collaborates with cinematographer Dod Mantle and writer/director Alex Garland, with Mantle bringing influences from Cinéma Vérité and Dogme 95. Interestingly, however, the cinematography in “The Beach” (2000), handled by Darius Khondji, is remarkably steady and polished, a departure from Boyle’s usual style.

The film begins with Richard (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) narrating the story of how he left his life in the United States and why he ended up in Thailand. Richard is a young man—too...

Matt Damon’s next big role is in Christopher Nolan’s epic, The Odyssey, but many haven’t forgotten the underwhelming performance in 2021’s The Last Duel with Ben Affleck. This historical drama crashed and burned at the box office, with only $30 million in worldwide gross on a budget of $100 million (via The Numbers)
Despite a renowned filmmaker like Ridley Scott directing the movie and Oscar-winning co-writers like Damon and Affleck, the movie had a mixed critical reception. Now, another big-budget production and highly anticipated movie hinges on Damon, but will this ambitious project find success after his previous flop?

Stellan Skarsgård opened up about working with Ingmar Bergman at Karlovy Vary Film Festival.
“My complicated relationship with Bergman has to do with him not being a very nice guy. He was a nice director, but you can still denounce a person as an asshole. Caravaggio was probably an asshole as well, but he did great paintings,” said the Swedish actor.
“Bergman was manipulative. He was a Nazi during the war and the only person I know who cried when Hitler died. We kept excusing him, but I have a feeling he had a very weird outlook on other people. [He thought] some people were not worthy. You felt it, when he was manipulating others. He wasn’t nice.”
Skarsgård, in town to present “Sentimental Value” and pick up Crystal Globe award at the festival, also discussed Joachim Trier’s latest film.
“I’ve seen him really see the actors he’s worked with.

There’s something inherently audacious about Innovation: Ultimate. It’s not just a greatest hits compilation – it’s the full boxed set, the remastered edition, the director’s cut where every radical design decision Carl Chudyk ever cooked up finally gets its moment in the spotlight. And it doesn’t apologise for the chaos. If anything, it revels in it.
Designed by Chudyk and published by Asmadi Games, Innovation: Ultimate crams over a decade of asymmetric, icon-drenched, combo-laced gameplay into one rather unassuming box. But that box is practically bursting at the seams with potential mayhem: the original base game, all six expansions, a fresh Age 11 for future-tech mayhem, and a new twist in the form of the “Unseen” expansion.
For those unfamiliar with the Innovation experience, here’s the elevator pitch: players start in the Stone Age with a single card and use “innovations” to build a tableau of ideas,...

Viewer discretion is advised before watching not one, not two, but three exclusive clips from Garden of Eden — they contain graphic content that some may find disturbing.
Described as “‘American Horror Story‘ if it had a kinky and debaucherous fetish filled three-way with Martyrs and Hostel in a church pew,” the film hits digital this Friday, June 20, via Gravitas Ventures.
“After reading one specific scene in Garden of Eden, I knew that taking this role came along with a responsibility,” actress Gigi Gustin (The Retaliators), who appears in the first clip, tells Bloody Disgusting.
“In order to serve the story, I was going to have to be the most vulnerable I’ve ever been on screen before. I was going to have to go places emotionally that were uncomfortable, even for me, someone who’s very used to tapping into darkness for the sake of the character and the story,...

Kevin Smith may be one of the biggest comic book nerds around, but when it comes to the idea of stepping into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a director? He has a very definite view on the subject, and it isn’t to leap for joy at the idea.
Smith’s body of work has mostly been focused on low-budget movies that are, by his own description, “Kevin Smith movies” that “nobody wants to make.” For that reason, the idea of getting behind the camera to make a Marvel movie is a completely ridiculous idea, as he explained in a recent interview with Collider.
"Everyone's like, 'Do you want to make a Marvel movie?' F*cking never. What in my body of work has ever made anyone think, 'He'd be good for that sort of visual spectacle.’ I'm put on this Earth to make Kevin Smith movies, if anything,...

Recently, Kevin Smith opened up about whether he had any major regrets in his 30-plus years making movies, and his answer was—expectedly—not making Superman Lives. While the DC Universe is littered with scrapped film and television projects, none are more infamous. The unmade film would have starred Nicolas Cage as the Man of Steel, and one of the candidates to direct was Robert Rodriguez. Notably, the film suffered a lot of production setbacks, including multiple changes in directing and writing staff. This ultimately affected Smith himself when new project director Tim Burton chose Wesley Strick to replace him.
Nearly three decades later, Smith still speaks of Superman Lives as a great what-if. He explained: "If I could make anything that didn't happen, happen, I think it would be that." He then clarified that he felt this was largely "because [he] didn't have the pressure of directing the movie" himself.

An erotic thriller that has a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score and should have been a shoe in for Oscar nominations ended up being disqualified for a technicality. Kevin Smith has been promoting the re-release of his cult classic Dogma into theaters, and he mentioned the Oscar controversy concerning his lead actress for that movie, Linda Fiorentino.
Kevin Smith went on The Rich Eisen Show to talk about the re-release of Dogma. The two discussed some interesting trivia about how Smith wanted Samuel L. Jackson to play Rufus. However, Chris Rock wanted the role and Smith said the actor fought for it. He also talked about how star-studded his cast was before discussing his lead actress, Linda Fiorentino, who played Bethany in Dogma. That is when Smith mentioned why he was so excited to get her for the movie.
Smith said Fiorentino just starred in Men in Black, so she had that fame coming in.

More than a quarter of a century after its release, Kevin Smith’s Dogma remains one of the most ambitious and inventive films about spirituality Hollywood ever made.
Smith’s fourth film, it took the signature, wisecracking verbosity of Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy and combined it with the filmmaker’s interpretation of the Catholic beliefs by which he’d been raised. “Woke” before the term existed, Dogma featured a female God, a Black Jesus, and a series of increasingly unconventional portrayals of other divine figures. Yet armed with a killer cast that includes Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Linda Fiorentino, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, Salma Hayek, and Alanis Morrissette, today the film has endured as a surprisingly reverent — and to many viewers, relatable — portrait of religious faith, interrogated and restored in a journey that culminates in the filmmaker’s hometown of Red Bank, N.J.

While their feelings about Clerks and Mallrats were less clear, the Catholic Church really seemed to hate Kevin Smith’s Dogma.
As with Monty Python’s Life of Brian two decades prior, when Dogma first hit theaters back in 1999, humorless religious fanatics relentlessly protested the film. Even though Smith himself claimed to be a believer in the church’s teachings, clearly many folks weren’t happy that the Chasing Amy director turned scripture into a wacky comedy starring the Good Will Hunting guys as murderous ex-angels, Alan Rickman as a genital-less deity and Chris Rock as the 13th apostle.
They probably weren’t super-thrilled with the “Buddy Christ” stuff, either.
Smith was even sent death threats at the time, just like Jesus would have wanted. And keep in mind that this was back when sending a death threat required putting in the effort to leave your house to buy a stamp and mail an envelope.

I’m sure most of us jumped for joy when it was announced that Kevin Smith had purchased back Dogma. After years of it sitting and collecting dust on the shelf, more people are finally able to experience its wacky glory. And Smith being who he is, is doing a tour to properly celebrate. Kevin Smith, a huge comic fan and director in his own right, recently gave his two cents regarding James Gunn's creative vision for Superman, noting its more comic-accurate tone. Releasing July 11, 2025, the film stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, as well as Rachel Brosnahan, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Maria Gabriela de Faria, and Nicholas Hoult. It will follow a younger Superman balancing his day job as a Daily Planet reporter with his super-heroics.
Per Collider, Smith had a simple answer as to why Superman's marketing has clicked with him: "It feels more comic book-y is what it is." The Dogma director continued: "I mean, number one, putting his trunks on the outside again is just charming, and including the dog is not something we’ve seen over the course of the last 10 years, and I think that’s such a smart choice, man. Dogma director Kevin Smith has some kind words about the upcoming Superman movie. The first Dcu feature under James Gunn and Peter Safran's lead will be entering theaters in just a few weeks, and the filmmaker praised the trailer for sticking to its comic book roots, giving his thoughts on why this upcoming superhero flick is sure to succeed.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Smith stated that the trailer feels reminiscent of comic book stories and that Gunn has made plenty of smart choices for what he presents on screen. Although Smith was skeptical that Krypto the Superdog might get harmed somehow, he liked the film's charm based on the trailer alone.

Kevin Smith’s long-vanished religious satire Dogma is set for a nationwide theatrical return on June 5, backed by roughly 2,000 screens in the United States and Canada and accompanied by a recorded Q&a from the director’s recent roadshow tour.
The revival follows Smith’s 2024 deal to wrest the rights from the Weinstein catalog, ending two decades of home-video scarcity that had driven second-hand Blu-ray prices into three-figure territory.
In interviews over the past week, Smith said the rerelease model was inspired by Taylor Swift’s direct partnership with AMC Theatres for her Eras Tour concert film; he has negotiated a similar arrangement with Iconic Films and AMC, bypassing traditional studio middlemen. A collectible Buddy Christ popcorn bucket, still in the design phase, could join the promotion if the exhibitor signs off.
On the physical-media front, Smith confirmed that a “fat-ass Steelbook” 4K edition is in the works with an unnamed but “popular” boutique distributor,...

Kevin Smith has announced plans for a physical release of his long-out-of-print comedy Dogma, which was previously back in theaters celebrating its 25th anniversary. As one of the defining directors of the 1990s, Smith’s 1999 fantasy comedy Dogma has often been overshadowed by other works starring the stoner duo Jay and Silent Bob, like Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy. As perhaps the most ambitious and controversial movie in Smith’s entire back catalog, the way Dogma explored topics relating to Catholicism and the Catholic Church head-on meant it was subjected to protests and accusations of blasphemy.
Dogma was the highest-grossing release in Smith’s View Askewniverse, but rights issues meant that the film was unavailable to stream or purchase digitally for years. As a film that was previously owned personally by Harvey and Bob Weinstein, it was not until 2024 that Smith managed to regain control of Dogmaand put in motion...

During a recent conversation with Deadline following his Dogma (1999) victory lap at Cannes, Kevin Smith praised the DC Studios movie’s latest trailer for presenting a fresh approach to the superhero’s struggle with humanity, as well as a return to its camp comic book roots.

After Kevin Smith’s Dogma returned to Cannes last month and received a seven-minute ovation, per Deadline, the portrayal of God on screen is back in the public consciousness. While Dogma is definitely a comedy — serious religious films don’t feature Jay and Silent Bob as foretold prophets — Smith didn’t hire a comedian for his Almighty, choosing Alanis Morissette instead “because I always thought God would be Canadian.” But other films and TV shows have tapped comic actors for their Gods, correctly imagining that He has an epic sense of humor.

Lord have mercy! With an anticipated re-release around the corner for the film’s 25th anniversary, Kevin Smith is full of surprises regarding his 1999 comedy classic Dogma. Considered by many to be one of Smith’s most excellent films (my wife loves this movie), Dogma skirts the line between blasphemy, sinful comedy, and clever observation that could sway someone teetering on the edge of re-evaluating their allegiances to a higher power. Speaking with Smith for an upcoming interview, JoBlo’s Tyler Nichols inquired about plans for Dogma’s re-release on physical media. Smith answered by blessing us with confirmation about a 4K Steelbook release for Dogma in the coming months (watch the clip above!).
Smith says he’s working closely with a “popular physical media distributor” to get a 4K Steelbook version of Dogma ready for a December release. He says the 4K restoration of the comedy that makes some Catholics cringe looks fantastic,...

One of the most heartwarming things about Kevin Smith's otherwise bland Jay & Silent Bob Rebootwas seeing him back on good terms with Ben Affleck. Before becoming an A-list movie star in the 1990s, Affleck several of Smith's indies; he's an integral part of the filmmaker's View Askewniverse franchise. Over the years, Smith has often spoken about their friendship — he even got an early glimpse of his Bat-suit, and Affleck cast a bunch of people from Smith's Red State in Argo — and has also taken every opportunity to poke fun at Affleck's career. During one of his question-and-answer shows, Smith said that Affleck had a "one for them, one for me" policy, and that the movie Paycheck was firmly a "one for them" kind of project. Smith didn't seem to be much of a fan, describing his buddy's movie as "aptly named."

Dogma holds a special place of its own among Kevin Smith's filmography, and fans are mostly elated that the director is finally working on a sequel. Smith, who has already produced sequels to Clerks and Jay and Silent Bob: Strike Back, is currently in development on Dogma 2, after the rights to the movie were locked away by Miramax for years. Details about the project are being kept a secret by Smith and those involved, but the director is aware of how much pressure rests on his shoulders to get the movie right.
Kevin Smith recently spoke to Screen Rant to promote the theatrical re-release of Dogma, and opened up about the pressure he feels over fans' expectations for Dogma 2. "I can't f*cking afford to ruin a Dogma spinoff," Smith said. "Too many people f*cking love this movie, so I can't make that same movie again, because I don't have the same faith.

Kevin Smith has finally secured the rights to his long out-of-print classic from 1999, and he explains the complicated process of dealing with disgraced movie executive, Harvey Weinstein. Smith was one of the handful of independent filmmakers from the 1990s who helped revolutionize the small-budget movie. Following his breakout film, Clerks, with a string of irreverent and poignant comedies, Smith captured the zeitgeist of the final years of the decade. However, one of his most popular films was tied up in rights issues for years, but the director has finally resolved them over 25 years later.

Kevin Smith’s “Dogma” is back.
After touring the film to sold-out crowds earlier this year, Smith’s controversial 1999 feature returns to theaters everywhere June 5 via Iconic Films, complete with a Q&a that was recorded at the first stop of the tour. What makes the movie’s resurrection so miraculous is the fact that the film, which stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as a pair of fallen angels looking to make hell on earth, had been out-of-print and downright impossible to stream for years.
In fact, until recently, it had been under the control of Harvey Weinstein. That’s right – a movie about angels had long been trapped by a man many see as the devil.
How “Dogma” made its way back to cinemas, on more screens than it did in 1999, is just as dramatic and unexpected as anything in the movie.

Dogma 2 Gets Encouraging Script Update From Kevin Smith After Getting Rights Back To Infamous Comedy
Twenty-five years after Kevin Smith released his controversial 1999 comedy Dogma, the architect of the View Askewniverse has spoken about his plans for a belated sequel. Starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as a pair of outcast angels seeking to return to Heaven by leveraging a loophole in Catholic Dogma, Smith’s fourth and most profitable movie had been largely unavailable for years due to a long-standing rights dispute with Harvey Weinstein. While making his cult hit religious comedy Dogma, filmmaker Kevin Smith completely forgot to whom he was talking when it came to Catholicism.
When Dogma first premiered in 1999, the release of a film about fallen angels trying to usurp God while a conflicted, pro-choice Catholic races to New Jersey to save the world through euthanasia predictably sparked protests from conservative Catholics, with Smith famously and hilariously joining the picket line while incognito. Interestingly enough, despite the indulgently sacrilegious elements of Dogma, Smith still considered himself a lapsed Catholic when he made the un-divine comedy, which is more than the movie’s stand-out supporting star would have ever said for his own religious beliefs.
Yesterday, Smith took part in a Reddit Ama where one Dogma fan asked the prolific filmmaker to share a story from his time working with the legendary iconoclastic comedian George Carlin, who played the marketing-minded Cardinal Glick in the film.

Matt Damon’s fight sequence in his $290 million action thriller gets high marks from an expert for its martial arts. Hand-to-hand combat was the last thing on Damon’s mind in early films like The Rainmaker, Dogma and Rounders, movies that were not about highlighting his physical prowess. His character in Good Will Hunting was indeed a scrapper, but his fighting style was not exactly polished.
Damon’s ascendance to star status saw him playing a lot of cocky kids a la young Tom Cruise, mixing in the occasional comedy (Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back) and grown-up thriller (Ocean’s 11). There were also the prestige dramas, some on the cringey side (The Legend of Bagger Vance), and some in the respectable failure department (All the Pretty Horses). Damon then embarked on a new path in his career, one that would eventually lead him to blockbuster success as a leading actor.

After initially announcing the project and heralding the return of stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, last fall Smith was forced to walk back the big news, clarifying that he hadn’t actually spoken to the actors and had yet to start work on the script.
While there’s not any casting news to speak of, Smith has provided one important update: He’s at least started the script. “I’m writing the sequel,” the director stated in an interview for Cannes’ website.

In a revival of the minimalist spirit first seen in Dogme 95, five Scandinavian filmmakers introduced Dogma 25 at a Cannes event hosted by Zentropa. Their aim: to counter the dominance of algorithm-driven content by making five features within a year using handwritten scripts and excluding internet-based tools from the creative process.
May el-Toukhy, whose Queen of Hearts served as Denmark’s 2019 Oscars submission, leads the collective. She joined Milad Alami (The Charmer), Annika Berg (Hurricane), Isabella Eklöf (Holiday) and visual artist Jesper Just to present a manifesto they called “a cultural uprising.” Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, co-founders of the original Dogme 95, offered their endorsement.
Ten Vows for a New Era
Scripts must be original and handwritten by the director.
At least half the film runs without dialogue.
Internet use is banned during all creative stages.
Funding must arrive with no creative conditions attached.
Crews may include no more than ten people behind the camera.

I’ve said it before — and I’ll say it again unless Wes Anderson suddenly shifts gears and makes an earthy Dogma ’25 film — but I don’t think Wes Anderson makes “movies.” He makes moving dioramas. The worlds he creates for us are intimately crafted, finely mapped and production designed with an uncanny eye for detail. One suspects that Anderson handpicks every tile on every floor in his movies, and could tell you exactly what’s wrong with each of the individual slabs he rejected.
But Anderson’s diorama films are not, despite some hack AI enthusiasts’ insistence to the contrary, easily imitated. You may recognize his signature perpendicular framing and penchant for symmetry, and you can approximate them at home, but Anderson tells meaningful stories within those stylistic obsessions. His movies are about people controlling every aspect of their lives, right down to their uniform-like clothes, their tidy board...

Dogma isn’t dead!
In a packed presser this afternoon at the Zentropa villa in Cannes, filmmakers May el-Toukhy, Milad Alami, Annika Berg, Isabella Eklöf and Jesper Just announced that they are launching a rebranded Dogma manifesto, styled as Dogma 25, to “protect the artistic integrity of feature film and create space for uncompromising cinematic storytelling.”
The manifesto contains 10 new dogmas, and the filmmakers said they have taken a “new vow of chastity” to uphold the rules, which they explained are influenced by three central themes: a return to the physical reality, aesthetic restrain and economic and geographic accountability. You can read the full list of dogmas below.
No. 1 on the list compels each director to only work on screenplays that are original and handwritten by the director. The list demands that the internet is off limits in all creative processes, and the filmmakers must only accept funding with no content-altering conditions attached.

Five Danish filmmakers are picking up the baton from the founders of Dogma 95 and launching Dogma 25 along with a new manifesto and ten “vows of chastity” to “protect the artistic integrity of feature film and create space for uncompromising cinematic storytelling.”
May el-Thouky, Milad Alami, Isabella Eklöf, Annika Berg (“Hurricane”) and rising talent Jesper Just will lead the new revolution.
Previously, Lars von Trier, Thomas Vinterberg, Søren Kragh-Jacobsen and Kristian Levring kicked off the movement that resulted in 212 Danish and international feature films, including “The Celebration,” “The Idiots,” “Italian for Beginners” and more.
“We celebrate Dogma 95, the filmmakers who came before us, and those who will come after. We stand together to defend artistic freedom as a shield against pointlessness and powerlessness. Dogma 25 is a rescue mission and a cultural uprising,” stated new leaders.
