Bill Murray at an event for Broken Flowers (2005)
Bill Murray Explains Why He Created a Secret 1-800 Number to Be Reached About Roles
Bill Murray at an event for Broken Flowers (2005)
Bill Murray has become a mystical character in popular culture, and not only because he occasionally pops up at wedding parties. With no agent or manager, the elusive Murray assesses most roles that come his way through a 1-800 number that he created years ago. Without numerous filmmakers confirming its existence, Murray’s unusual answering machine might sound like another apocryphal tale from his quixotic mythology. However, in a recent interview with IndieWire, the actor explained that he created the number — which is not listed, and only passed around through word of mouth — to keep Hollywood agents off his back.

“I had a house phone, and it would just ring and ring,” Murray said, while promoting his starring role in Jim Jarmusch’s zombie comedy “The Dead Don’t Die,” which opens this week. “Finally, I’d pick up the phone and I’d say,...

‘Gimme Danger’ Exclusive Images: Jim Jarmusch’s New Documentary Recounts The History of The Stooges
Iggy Pop
Director Jim Jarmusch is currently having quite a busy year. He has two films set for release: “Paterson,” starring Adam Driver as a bus driver and poet living in New Jersey, and the documentary “Gimme Danger,” which recounts the history of Iggy Pop and The Stooges. Forming the band in the late 1960’s, Iggy Pop was a provocateur, performing half-naked and stage diving while confronting the audience with such classic numbers as “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” “Search and Destroy,” and “Raw Power.” Featuring brand-new interviews with Iggy Pop, Jarmusch looks back at one of the seminal American rock bands, their impact on the culture, and the circumstances of their reformation in 2003. Check out two exclusive images from the film below.

[Cannes Review] Gimme Danger
If there is one blemish in Jim Jarmusch’s exceptional filmography, it’s his first foray into documentary: 1997’s little-seen Year of the Horse, a surprisingly insipid portrait of Neil Young and Crazy Horse on tour. He gives it a second try with Gimme Danger, another homage to a legendary rock band, The Stooges, which, though more enjoyable and informative, nevertheless confirms that the director should stick to fiction.

Those hoping for something in the line of the Maysles brothers’ and Charlotte Zwerin’s Gimme Shelter will be sorely disappointed, as similarities don’t extend much beyond their titles. Unlike that canonical masterpiece, Jarmusch’s film is a strictly conventional affair that resembles any number of TV documentaries.

Addressing the camera, Iggy Pop (née James Osterberg) narrates the history of The Stooges, starting with a childhood living in a cramped trailer with his parents in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He describes...

Pharrell and Usher May Be Working on a Rodeo Song
Year of the Horse (1997)
During an interview with GQ, Pharrell gets a phone call from Usher ("Yo, Ush") and we, the reader, get to overhear what is perhaps the most wonderful phone conversation of all time. You see, Pharrell is in the process of trying to convince Usher to release a song about "the rodeo world" inspired by the Year of the Horse (which we are currently in): "Look at what happened when Ginuwine did 'Pony' and he had the mechanical bull ... Now, that was Ginuwine. We’re talking about you, and bringing you to the rodeo world with a record that gives you the license to do that." Wait so, Usher in chaps? Yes, please.

China: 'Robocop,' 'American Hustle' Gear Up for Release as 'Hobbit 2' Rules
Year of the Horse (1997)
Now that the Lunar New Year holiday film business bonanza is over in China, attention is turning to the movies that audiences in the world's second biggest film market will get a chance to enjoy in the early weeks of the Year of the Horse. Advance publicity for Jose Padliha’s re-booted Robocop is already much in evidence in Mainland Chinese cinemas ahead of its Friday (Feb. 28) release date, with cardboard cutouts of Joel Kinnaman as the future of law enforcement patrolling the theater lobbies. Manchester United's Adnan Januzaj gives BBC subtitles a headache
Manchester United's first season with David Moyes may not exactly be going to plan, but at least fans of the football club had something to laugh about when the BBC subtitles team struggled to get a handle on their young midfielder Adnan Januzaj.

Casual Match of the Day 2 viewers might have been left puzzled and wondering whether manager Moyes had made a last ditch transfer window signing, when the name "Janet Jazz Jazz Jam" accompanied Juan Mata, Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney on a list of their forwards.

The error occurred during a segment when host Mark Chapman was reeling off the talent in the Man United squad, following their shock draw against Fulham at the weekend.

It is the latest subtitles blunder from the BBC, who recently welcomed in "the year of whores" during the Chinese New Year celebrations for the Year of the Horse.

Year of the Horse (1997)
How the World Is Welcoming the Year of the Horse
Year of the Horse (1997)
Friday marks the Chinese New Year, and people across the globe are welcoming the Year of the Horse with fireworks, parades, and religious ceremonies. Traditionally, the Year of the Horse marks a time when people are more confident and fixed in their ways, which is a great mark of progress, but it can sometimes lead to more conflict. Those born in the Year of the Horse, which includes those born in 1966, 1978, and 1990, are believed to be livelier and positive, and this year's festivities definitely brought out those same qualities. Street performers acted out a lion dance during a Hong Kong parade, people in Bali held on to incense during prayers, and in Beijing, actors took the stage for a traditional performance. Take a look at the most gorgeous photos from this year's celebrations, then learn how to make homemade fortune cookies for your own celebrations! View Slideshow ›...

Votd: Jim Jarmusch Sings Neil Young’s ‘Cortez the Killer’
Jim Jarmusch
Director Jim Jarmusch loves Neil Young. The venerable singer/songwriter masterfully scored Jarmusch's Dead Man and with the band Crazy Horse was the object of the filmmaker's follow-up, the tour documentary Year of the Horse. Jarmusch also seems to love the New York edition of the All Tomorrows Parties music festival which, for the past couple years, has taken place in the Catskills each September. In 2008 as friends and I strolled around Atp one of them said, "hey, there's Jim Jarmusch having a picnic." Evidently the director returned to the scene of his lunch again this year. How do we know? Because there's a video of him singing Neil Young's classic 'Cortez the Killer' in a hotel room at the fest. The video comes from Pitchfork, which has been posting a great series called Surveillance, all of which so far were shot within the small, dingy rooms at Kutcher's,...

Neil Young
The biggest problem with Neil Young's recent spate of archival live releases is that he's already put out so many anthologies and concert recordings that the new issues risk redundancy simply by existing. Sure, "It's all one song," as the man himself once put it (on 1997's Year Of The Horse—a live album, of course), but hearing every version is a fanatic's game. Sugar Mountain: Live At Canterbury House 1968 in some ways typifies this. The performances, captured over two November nights at the University Of Michigan, are intimate, clear (the two-track recording is very good), and obviously felt. It's got historical value, too, as Young's first solo performances following his departure from Buffalo Springfield. "I never plan anything ahead, in case anybody hasn't noticed," he says while introducing his early song "Sugar Mountain." For...
