Destiny & the Angel.

Director Eliseo knows the language of film as he marries images, music and poetry into a fine craft of story telling. It may be a simple fairy tale but it is how Eliseo tells it, with affection and understanding for his characters.

Simply Beautiful

It has been extremely difficult to find Eliseo Subiela's films in Mexico City, however, I've heard (and read) extremely good comments about 'Man Facing Southeast' (1987), 'The Dark Side of The Heart I and II' (1992 and 2001) and 'Little Miracles' (1997). After watching Little Miracles, I begin to understand why. The story is quite simple: a young woman who believes is a fairy… But just as Baz Luhrman in 'Moulin Reuge!', the magic of the movie is not in the story, but instead in the way of telling it. The images and little details that you can see in such a beautiful movie is what makes it so magical: the two characters that are blind (Susana and Don Francisco) and the way they see the life; the other three fairies (the girls that Rosalia meets in the Tango Night); Santiago (that is trying to prove extraterrestrial life and when he is not working talks all the time with Lola, his lovely dog that he thinks was an opera singer in her last life); the music, the music Rosalia sings and also the classical music that Don Francisco likes to listen; the texts of the books Don Francisco chooses each time Rosalia reads to him; the dreams that Rosalia has where always appear a fairy and are in black and white; and little phrases which only motive of appearing is making us think, such as: 'People is good, it's only that they don't have a chance to prove it', 'How strange life is… so wonderfully mysterious', and 'Love is the everlasting innocence, and everlasting innocence is not thinking'. The message of the movie, to me would be that there are good things every minute in every corner, but we are always to busy to appreciate them.

Gentle touch for a fairy tale

The movie begins in a Super market and ends at a bus stop. Strange locations for a fairy tale. Nevertheless it is a movie full of poetry where a fairy might well be a supermarket cashier. Full of poetry does not mean cheesy and this movie is really not cheesy. Dialogue is always very original. Cinematography is excellent with sharp contrasts of colour. Acting is fair. Ortega is beautiful and we can't beleive her when she says to her friends during the movie that no one could find her attractive.

A magical tale

Eliseo Subiela used to make this kind of movies. This time, the poetry and magic comes into the real world through the eyes of Rosalia, a girl who believes she is a Sorceress. Just like always, Eliseo make us live the way his characters live, and almost feel the same. Full of outstanding scenes, "Pequeños Milagros" is a fine narrated movie, with technical perfection, and a nice script. See it. Rosalia may open your heart...

A Man of Miracles.

Again Eliseo has touched the world. Now we have his poetry stirring our soul, though not as serious as other films, this has powerful message of what our world is and what our lives are. Buenas Aires again shows the world that it is the true heart of America and its people the capable of creating miracles.
