Eat an owl ...... save a logger's job.

"Crosscut" is a very uneasy blend, of Mafia hit man on the run, loggers vs environmentalists, and romance, that is surprisingly good. Costas Mandylor, doing a fair Michael Madsen imitation, is hiding out from the mob, who want him dead, in a small Northern California logging community. He takes a job at the mill, which is slated to close because of an endangered owl. There is a romance with one of the locals, and a shootout with the goons pursuing him. Surprisingly, all of these subplots do not detract enough to prevent me from recommending "Crosscut". Acting and character development is way above average for a 'B" movie, and the film is quite entertaining. - MERK

Aimed at a hopefully minimal audience.

If one is capable of accepting as premise that a born and bred New York City mafioso, fleeing after killing the wrong man, makes his way to Oregon whereupon he immediately replaces his silk suit with lumberjack attire and promptly finds employment with a veteran logging crew, then one will soon enough accept the remainder of this film's silly scenario. Those who are enthralled with the Australian Chindown and Mumble School of acting will enjoy Costas Mandylor's performance as the born again timberman, Martin Niconi, and in several scenes he does nearly manage to change his expression, apparently enough to gain the hearts of a local lass (Megan Gallagher) and her son, but not enough to avoid intimidating most of the remaining cast who spend a goodly amount of their time in attempting to maim or kill him. The swiftly moving plot is continuously blemished by cartoonish violence of the type that stuntmen drool over, and the talented Gallagher and Allen Cutler as her son are wasted, but the scenery in California's El Dorado County is glorious, and the admittedly typed Jay Acovone again shines with an electric performance as the main mob executioner on the trail of Niconi.

Good Mafia Story

I have to disagree with the last reviewer. I like this movie because it has an original plot...good drama with some average acting with few action scenes, mainly gun battles and from what I recall a couple of fights. I like B Grade movies as I grew up watching them during my childhood days and now I'm currently working on collecting each movie of the B Grade 80's and 90's genre.

I just bought the VHS tape of Crosscut from the amazon.com store. I live in Australia so the store charged me 41 dollars in total. However, knowing that I got ripped off in shipping costs but you know what? I have not seen this movie in years and I do remember majority of the movie since I saw it last but I also truly enjoyed watching it. Give this movie a chance. If the movie was as bad as the last reviewer makes it out to be then why would I even bother ordering a VHS tape of it from America to be delivered in Australia?

Personally, I will be proud to add this as part of my collection where I will put the movie in my Crime section or Action section. This movie is also very rare and hard to find. If amazon didn't have a few tapes left, I'd be screwed and would probably never get the opportunity to own it but I would never give up searching for Crosscut if that was the case.
