Rangeela was the movie that started a new era in Hindi movies - one where the heroines started wearing skimpy outfits without looking vulgar. Prior to this I remember shuddering at Karishma Kapoor's crass numbers in Raja Babu and Khuddar.
This was a movie that was the turning point for 4 major film personalities:
1. Ram Gopal Verma: He was a pretty good director with movies like Shiva in his repertoire, but Rangeela was the movie that really made people sit up and take notice. Subsequently RGV delivered several movies of style and substance, though he did generate some stinkers.
2. A. R. Rehman: OK, this is an unfair statement. Rehman entered the major league with his very first score in Roja. But Rangeela was his first score for a Hindi movie. And what a success it was! It had several foot-tapping numbers, a lot of which are popular even today.
3. Aamir Khan: I became a big fan of Aamir when I watched Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander. I later watched some of his earlier movies and really loved his performances. But his performance in Rangeela was mind-blowing. The ease with which he slipped into the "Munna" persona was really praiseworthy and marked a turning point in his career. Hereon he started picking up roles with more nuances and challenges and became a veritable hit as an actor and the industry started referring to him as a "perfectionist".
4. Urmilla: Oh Urmilla! I remember watching the trailers of this movie and thinking, "This movie will survive on the lack of Urmilla's clothes". It probably did, but while watching the movie not once was I thinking about what she was wearing. Prior to Rangeela it was customary for Hindi film heroines to dress up in a manner that did not offend Indian sensibilities. Actresses like Karishma Kapoor and Mamta Kulkarni were frowned upon and in general considered B-grade actresses. Urmilla blew the theory out of the water with this film and overnight established herself as a sensation after quite an indifferent start to her career (I am discounting Masoom, which she did as a child actress). Several of her scenes are referred to even today in reverent terms, albeit in a comical manner: Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Khan referred to the "Banian on a beach" while MC'ing for the Filmfare Awards in 2004, nearly 10 years after the movie. Urmilla in subsequent movies has proved that she can do a lot more than look sexy.
Does the movie have flaws? I would be surprised if it didn't. It stretched the limits of believability a bit thin and some songs didn't need to be present. But I am not complaining. For a ticket price of Rs. 15 those days, it was great value for money. And thanks for boosting four personalities who have, since, been a source for high-value and high-class entertainment!

RGV who now does nonsense mostly did some great films till COMPANY and SARKAR
RANGEELA is a true funny movie and a nice romantic movie too
The film also at it's times was perhaps the first movie to show bollywood digs which is now done to death and the digs are damn funny
Even the characterization of Aamir and his love to Urmila is fantastic The film is handled brilliantly only it dips in between with too many songs especially in the second half and also too many sleazy shots of Urmila which were shocking then but it was forgiven too then The climax too is brilliant
Direction by RGV is brilliant Music is a winner Amongst actors Aamir got a huge turning point in this movie, though he was always praised in films like JJWS, QSQT, DIL in between 1993- 1995 after HHRPK he started getting many flops which include the one of the top comedies ANDAZ APNA APNA(1994) where too his comic act was praised but RANGEELA gave him a big hit and he got praised for his role The best part is the way he grabs the nuances of the role and makes a tapori role seem his second skin He is outstanding Urmila too does a good job though at times too over enthusiastic Jackie Shroff however has a shorter role and he does it well but his looks(perhaps now) don't suit the superstar tag Amongst rest Avtar Gill is funny, Achyut Podar is likable and so is Reema Lagoo rest are good too

With Rangili "Urmila" dancing tirelessly every quarter of an hour, this movie is a feast from frame 1 to the end. Excellent performances by both Aamir and Urmaila produce some enchanting moments but it is the underplayed role by Jackie that goes to make this movie a complete entertainer. The music by A.R. Rahman is one of its own kind.
A must see.
A must see.
Rangeela is a nice, significant little movie, consedering it's release time, when it was fit and famous to release bigstar love-stories, along came Rangeela, who dared to be... different.
The story evolves around Munna (Aamir Khan) & Milli (Urmila), Milli is a girl from the city of Mumbai who is a backup dancer in Bollywood movies, Aamir is a tenant who lives in the same apartment as Milli, he is a streetthug who makes a living by selling black cinema tickets. In turn of events Milli ends up with a role in a big Bollywood movie, and the world around her changes. Munna once her best friend, is in love with her but because this new turn in her life, get cut off...
The movie lacks certain grip, the greatest flaw here lays in the editing, the movie moves along smoothly but the editing lacks sharpness.
Other than this the movie is a must watch for every Bollywood fan, the music is marvelous (prehaps one of Rahman's best, next to Taal), the storyline is clever and refreshing, it dares to stand out, and portrays the aspect of love on a whole different level. The acting, the acting is just SUPER!!!, Aamir is the true star of the movie, he outshines everybody in every scene, Aamir has given a performance of a lifetime in the face of Munna. From the "AC idhar ghuma" dialogue to playing hurt from loosing his love to perfection. There is nobody in Bollywood who could have played the role of Munna like Aamir has, Urmila played a nice lovely girl and she did her role justice, Jackie plays a moviestar, but due to lack of meatyness in his character it's not one of his best, but there was no substitute to his charm
I gave this movie a 10, a rare high grade from me, but due to it's flaws Rangeela is and forever will be a Bollywood classics, it's great musical score throughout, the refreshing script and the marvelous acting will forever guarantee that
A must watch for every Bollywood fan, and a piece of art for every Aamir Khan fan.

I loved Rangeela since the first day I've seen it. I first saw it in 1995. I started to like Urmilla. She looked really cute. I appreciated Aamir Khan's role. He usually plays the innocent quiet dude. But the Munna I saw was a remarkable act that any man in this film industry would die to have. Even in Ghulam his acting was as gr8 as a KHANDALA!! He got me in tears. It is now 2000 & I own the movie & I love it!! The songs done by A.R Rehman were good. It is a film that n-e-1 would love to see. I have a list of my favorite TOP 20 films ever. & Rangeela is 3rd. I felt bad that Aamir didn't win for Best Actor. Why is it that there is always some1 who backs his way up? I mean DDLJ just took over(my 2nd fave film.) It is upsetting that he didn't get an award. I mean Jackie got best supporting actor & Urmilla got appreciated. Ever since I saw the film, Mili was a name I loved. Our family's name of the fish is MILI. We all love Urmilla in my house. We all definitely loved Aamir from the start. His best film was JJWS, & Rangeela just led him to even more success. Jackie was a gr8 guy in the film not telling MILI of his love for her. I respected @ the fact that he gave her up to make her & Munna happy. He knows that TANHA TANHA YAHA PE JEENA, YEH KOI BAAT HAI?? Overall to be on my TOP 3 films is a good thing b/c I probably watch 300-400 films a year & most of them end up on my boring list.Rangeela is a film that will always be in my heart & the 3rd best film ever. The music by A.R was unbeatable.Esp. Tanha tanha. Asha did a good job & so did the lyrics by Mehboob. The area & background of this film was awesome. RANGEELA-I LOVE YOU.love 1 of the gr8 experienced rangeeli fans-anisha datta!!

- AnecdotesIt was after the release of Rangeela that Aamir Khan stopped attending Filmfare Awards. He had become upset that he did not win, or even be nominated for, the 1995 Best Actor award for his performance in the film. He also felt that for films like Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992) and Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993) that he should have gotten recognition from Filmfare and after these incidents he became upset with Filmfare. But after failing to receive recognition for Rangeela is when Aamir had had enough and decided to shun Filmfare altogether.
- GaffesWhen Mili comes to Munna's room to read over her lines, a poster for Commando (1985) is hanging on the wall over a bedside table, while a calendar is on the wall above the bed. Later in the scene, the calendar disappears and the poster has shifted to the left to take its spot.
- Crédits fousSince the film's plot revolves around an aspiring actor, the credits had images of famous yesteryear actors and actresses like Savithri, Madhubala, Hemamalini, Dev Anand, Rekha, Amitabh Bachchan, Sridevi etc.
