Benson Boone Is Known for His Backflips. Nils Lofgren Did Them First
Image
Last month, Nils Lofgren was watching the Grammy Awards when he came upon a familiar sight. After Benson Boone started his performance of “Beautiful Things” in the audience, Lofgren observed Boone jump atop a piano and execute a side backflip; he then launched into yet another flip midway through the song. “He sounded great,” Lofgren says, “but I wasn’t ready for that. I’m glad to see the tradition carrying on.”

In the hall of fame of rock & roll stage moves, a backflip is a category all its own.

Horror Highlights: Tearsucker, Site 13, Journal Of The Dead, The Mistress, Invoking Yell, Stay Online
Image
Tearsucker: "The film tells the story of Lilly (Allison Walter), an emotionally vulnerable trauma survivor who is desperate to heal and get on with her life. Despite the support of her best friend Deb (Danielle Mcrae Spisso), Lilly is completely isolated. When she crosses paths with a charming stranger, Tom (Sam Brittan), at the park, she feels hope for the first time in months. Tom sweeps Lilly off her feet and invites her on a romantic weekend getaway. However, things take a disturbing turn when Lily discovers that Tom has an unusual appetite for tears… and will stop at nothing to get them.

Tearsucker is a stylish, twisted thriller that gives a true look at toxic relationships and the power dynamic that exists within them, as well as the red flags we often ignore."

Stories of Trump’s America: How Documentary Filmmakers Plan to Escape the Liberal Bubble
On Nov. 12 of this year, Impact Partners executive director and documentary producer Dan Cogan wrote a powerful call to action on Facebook. “The last 4 days have been a horror. The next 4 years will be worse,” he wrote. “And yet my pulse is quickening, because there is so much to be done, and we, the documentary film community, are in pole position to make a huge difference.”

Over 400 documentary filmmakers, producers and executives “liked” Cogan’s message—including Oscar-nominated directors Barbara Kopple, Matt Heineman, Heidi Ewing, Amy Berg and Lucy Walker—and over 40 individuals added comments.

But despite Cogan’s passionate and inspiring plea, the Facebook post also brought up some soul-searching within the documentary community: How do you make a difference if your work is only seen and discussed within the progressive “bubbles” of social media and urban centers? How do you avoid — as suggested by executives such as Jason Spingarn-Koff,...

Since the moment Eadweard Muybridge captured a man sprinting in 1887 runners have worn a path across the cinematic landscape. Opening with the sound of Tom Courtenay's feet thudding against a bleak rural lane, Tony Richardson and Alan Sillitoe's 1962 British New Wave classic is one of the most poetic running films in cinematic history. As Colin Smith, a petty delinquent, Courtenay gives a...

Brad Pitt Eating: The Mashup
Movie characters may seem more glamorous than you and me, but they've gotta eat. And you know who eats a lot in movies? Brad Pitt. And unlike the rest of us, even in comic moments, he looks good doing it (shocker).

Pitt did a fair amount of eating in his Oscar-nominated turn as Billy Beane in "Moneyball," but he chows down so much in so many movies, we're starting to wonder if the actor just gets hungry on set and brings his lunch into the scene with him. We're just waiting to see how much he ingests in "Killing Them Softly," out this week.

Movies Included (Click to Buy):

Troy | Mr. and Mrs. Smith | Moneyball | Ocean's Eleven | Johnny Suede | The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford | The Devil's Own | Inglorious Basterds  | Across the Tracks | Cutting Class | Kalifornia | Spy Game | Meet Joe Black | Sleepers | Seven Years in Tibet...

Billy Talent – Dead Silence Review
Ever since breaking onto the music scene in 2003 with their self-titled “debut” album after a lesser known name change, alternative rockers Billy Talent have been surpassing expectations with every new release. Maturing with grace much like a fine wine, their fourth release Dead Silence is no different, being some of their most mesmerizing work yet.

Abandoning the Led Zeppelin album naming convention of just numbering each CD – i.e. Billy Talent, Billy Talent II, Billy Talent III – Dead Silence improves upon the trademark Billy Talent sound in every way possible.

As an album overall, the most prevalent reaction to hit me was “Dead Silence sounds exactly like every other Billy Talent CD,” which I’ve emphatically relished about every other album as well. Billy Talent has found a dynamic sound which is both technically envied and pleasingly unique, perfecting their method with an “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” mentality.
